After arriving at the village early in the morning, Kiryu quickly made his way to the inn. He got a hot meal, then cleaned himself and changed into a fresh pair of robes. He was in a bit of a hurry... Kiryu had come a long way, and he was eager.
He confirmed with the woman at the front desk where to find the place he was looking for, and the description of the person he was there to see.
A spring in his step as he walked down the street, Kiryu swiftly found himself a building that was all too familiar, despite the fact that he'd never seen this particular one before. The clatter of staves clashing and the grunts and kiais, however, made Kiryu feel at home.
Making his way inside, he drew a couple of looks and smiled in return. Kiryu scanned the room, then found the person he was looking for, warming up in the dojo. Kiryu walked over, stopping a respectful distance away. Once he was noticed, Kiryu gave a small wave and smiled.
"Excuse me. I believe your name is Caffey, yes? One of the Cobra Warriors? My name is Kiryu. I follow the Path of Joy, and I've always wanted to know more about the Cobra style.I would be honored if you would spar with me, so that I could see it in action for myself."

Caffey let out a quick cheer as she dispatched another sparring partner, her third of the day. As soon as the cheer left her mouth, however, she remembered her proper manners, and bowed before her opponent, thanking him for the fight before he ran off. Quietly, a rarity for the energetic girl, she surveyed the dojo. None of the martial artists present seemed eager to spar after witnessing her expert display on her last sparring partner. Unfortunate, but expected. Caffey had only recently left her home at the Cobra school, but already she found herself somewhat disappointed by the quality of fighters she’d found outside the gates of the school. None of the people in this village had anything to teach her that she didn’t already know. It looked like she’d have to keep moving on, and hopefully she’d find someone eventually. For now, she resigned herself to practicing her solo forms. Quietly, precisely, the usually overflowing energy that the girl was known for melted into focus on the way her body moved. In the corner of her vision, she noticed a newcomer, one who was watching her. Without thinking, and quite quickly, Caffey returned to a neutral pose. It seemed that as soon as she noticed the newcomer, he was waving at her. His introduction was short, but gave just enough info for Caffey’s face to light up with a wide smile, and for her voice to regain its usual extreme enthusiasm. “Yup! That’s me! Cobra master, actually! ...Or I will be. Whatever! Nice to meet you, Kiryu. I’ve never heard of the Path of Joy…” She paused for a moment to think. “Yeah, no, never heard of it. But! I’m here to learn new things! I’ll teach you some of what I know if you teach me some of what you know!” In usual Caffey fashion, the longer she went on speaking, the more energetic and excited she sounded. She did her best to ensure she sounded coherent, however. [WC = 331]

Kiryu couldn't help but grin. The girl's energy was infectious. Kiryu took in her appearance, judging that they were close in age. He nodded his head at Caffey's correction. "My apologies. Cobra Master, it is. Not many outside of our sect know of the Path of Joy, to be fair. We're somewhat... not reclusive. Maybe... selective is the right word? It's more of a life philosophy than a martial one... at least, it is for most of our adherents."
As Kiryu spoke, he began to move to the center of the mat. He rolled his shoulders, then his neck, which popped loudly. He quickly stretched his legs a bit, continuing to talk. "Now, me? I am not most. But since you're showing me yours, it'd be rude not to show you mine, at least a little bit. In a nutshell, the Path of Joy teaches us to follow our own Path, to do good in the world, to cause as little harm as possible and to help those that cannot help themselves. It also teaches us to give others a choice... but to hold them to the consequences of that choice."
Kiryu stood from his leg stretch, rotating his torso from side to side to stretch out his back, then gathered himself in a fighting stance. His left leg was a foot ahead of his right, and his legs were shoulder width apart. Kiryu's left arm was bent and an open palm faced Caffey. His right was bent, parallel to the ground, held against his side. His right arm was level with his navel, and his right palm was open and facing skyward.
"Sometimes that means I used what I've learned to punish the wicked."
A quick, mischievous impulse tugged Kiryu's mouth into a smirk.
"I probably shouldn't enjoy it as much as I do, but hey... I'm only human, right?"

Internally, Caffey couldn't help but cheer for herself, that was the first time she'd actually heard someone refer to her as 'Cobra Master.' She liked the way it sounded. Outwardly, however, she kept the same level of excitement as before. She nodded, listening to Kiryu’s explanation of his philosophy, his school, smiling even wider than before. This was exactly what she’d been wanting to find after leaving the Cobra School, something new and unique and different. Still, the differences in this Path of Joy confused her, and she’d never been good at hiding her emotions. “ Martial artists dedicated to causing as little harm as possible? That seems a little uh… Counterproductive.” She started her own routine of stretches, despite it being pointless as she’d been fighting for most of the day already. Her face lit up once again at Kiryu’s comments about punishing the wicked. “ The Cobra School always taught us to help those weaker than ourselves! That used to get me in trouble, when I’d visit the villages, trying to help everyone I saw. I’d worry more if you didn’t enjoy punishing the wicked!” Even more than before, Caffey felt that this fight was going to be one the most enjoyable fights she’d had in years. An opponent with an unfamiliar style, who seemed as dedicated to his art as she was to her own, and who seemed just as excited for the fight as she was. “Alright, then. Show me what you’ve got.” She suddenly grew uncharacteristically quiet and quickly dropped into her standard battle stance, ready to fight.

At Caffey's words. Kiryu's smile altered somewhat. He still felt the excitement, the thrill of the fight, but he so rarely got a chance to really talk about the philosophy that he held so dear.
"Less so than you'd think," Kiryu said. He relaxed a bit, straightening up from his stance and letting his arms droop just a bit as he conversed. "I also may have misspoke a bit. It's about causing as little permanent harm as possible. I won't kill or cripple someone. But I have no problems causing injuries or putting the fear of god into some roided up bandit who has suddenly decided to play conqueror."
Kiryu paused, putting his thoughts together. "You see... if you kill someone? Their Path ends. Maybe they'll get it better in the next life. Who knows? But here, now, they are finished. They can never be better, or worse, than they are. Through walking the Path, you will learn the difference between virtue and malice. You will come to know these things... and you will choose."
Kiryu shrugged, then fell back into his fighting stance. "At least, that's what my parents drilled into my thick skull over the years. All I know is, my Path lies with protecting those who need it. And to do that, I need to get stronger, and I need friends... and I'm hoping that's where you come in."
Kiryu offered Caffey a fierce grin. "So why don't you take the first shot and show me just what the Cobra School has to teach me?"
With that, Kiryu beckoned Caffey forward, preparing for their contest.

At Kiryu’s invitation to attack first, Caffey looked him up and down, trying to find some kind of perceived weakness in his fighting stance. There was none that she could exploit, nothing that she could find to exploit to make her first attack particularly devastating, as in keeping with the Cobra style teachings. In an attempt to distract him from her looking him over for signs of weakness, she started speaking again, not entirely lacking the earlier energy, but certainly more subdued. “I have to say, I’m surprised anyone knows of the Cobra School at all out here in the rest of the world.” She began to circle around him, still watching for any sign of weakness that she might exploit. “We’re a small school, I can’t remember anyone from the outside world coming to train with us for more than a day, after all. But… All that’s meant so far is no one knows how to deal with my combat style.” Unable to find a weakness the conventional way, Caffey focused intensely, reaching out with her senses, feeling out for Kiryu’s energy. Her senses showed no weakness that she had previously missed, and also showed him to be approximately equal to her own strength. She continued to circle around him, now remaining quiet.

Kiryu nodded at Caffey’s words. “My sect is small, but we make it our business to keep an eye on notable individuals and martial styles. Kind of our way of trying to ensure humanity never faces a situation where we’re fractured and face a strong foe. We’ll know where the people that can train and fight and come together are. That’s part of why I’m traveling now; to meet these people, to see if I can trust them, and know that if we have to we’ll be able to band together.”
Kiryu watched the young woman’s movements, his eyes searching her entire body for any subtle motion, any muscle twitch that would betray her intent. He didn’t know quite how strong she was, but Kiryu had no doubt that someone as young as Caffey that could call themselves a Master was not someone to be trifled with. For his part, Kiryu decided not to mess around. With lesser opponents, he could hold back, use the merely physical parts of his talents. But he had promised to show Caffey his, and that meant pulling out all the stops. “You’re the first person outside of my sect that will ever see these techniques,” Kiryu said. “Well… I guess you and everyone that’s watching us,” he continued, smirking faintly at the other students that had gathered to watch them spar. He gave the crowd a small wave, and some of them smiled back a bit. “These are some of the esoteric techniques I’ve learned from my ancestors. I hope, with them, we can have a good match!” At that, Kiryu focused, channeling his innate spiritual energy. After a moment, a shroud of silver energy appeared, surrounding his body. Outlining his form were five golden orbs of ki. One flashed into motion around Kiryu’s body, forming a defensive perimeter that would hopefully make him harder to hit. Finally, Kiryu pulled on his power, refilling his ki reserves as he readied himself to face Caffey.

Caffey listened intently, but continued to watch Kiryu’s actions with the same intensity as before. She nodded tightly at his words. “ That’s kind of why I’m here too. Find strong people, see what I can learn, get the Cobra name out there, you know, stuff like that.” Caffey looked momentarily shocked at the sight of the ki orbs which suddenly surrounded Kiryu. With that, she had to admit to herself that whatever else Kiryu’s sect had taught him, it would be something utterly foreign to her. Ki manipulation was, of course, part of the Cobra teachings, but she’d never seen anything quite like that, and she’d never been particularly good at manipulating her own ki outward like that anyways. The best she’d been able to do was surround herself with it, adding some extra strength to her attacks. With that thought, Caffey let her aura wash over in just such a way. A cocoon of blue energy surrounded her, and finally she made her move. Suddenly and without warning, Caffey rushed forward, bringing her fist up in an uppercut, hoping to take Kiryu by surprise with her speed. “ The first tenant of the Cobra School; Strike hard, strike fast.” She said, letting her momentum carry her into an overhead kick.

As Caffey moved forward, Kiryu was hard pressed to react. The woman was fast. He could immediately see how she was already a Cobra Master. Still, Kiryu was no slouch himself, as his preparations demonstrated. The golden ki orb that had been activated before flitted about, outlining the path of the incoming attack. Kiryu just managed to pull his head back, out of the way of the blow. Instinct compelled him to side step, and the moment after he began to move, Caffey launched an incredible kick that would have had him seeing stars if Kiryu had not moved. Kiry whistled, watching Caffey's technique. "Incredible. Speed, precision, power. If I hadn't had an early warning... that would have hurt. A lot. I see you weren't lying about the speed of your strikes! Though... that's only one thing that the traditional practitioners of the Snake style were known for. Another was their excellent balance and defense.
Show me."At that, Kiryu dashed forward. He launched a complex series of strikes made up of odd extended knuckles, spear hand thrusts, and kicks to nerve clusters. The barrage was meant to interrupt the flow of ki in Caffey's body, making performing such acrobatic attacks more taxing. Kiryu followed up with a couple of energy blasts, fired simultaneously from his hands. As he attacked, the ki orb he had utilized before flickered out of existence. With a mental command, Kiryu sent another orb spinning about to provide an early warning, and the armor around him actually extended an energy tendril to swat at Caffey. Hopefully some of the attacks would land; Kiryu didn't think he could deal with Caffey's epic rush for long.

Caffey was utterly stunned when her uppercut missed, and absolutely amazed when her kick faced the same fate. She was supposed to be the fastest and yet Kiryu had made dodging her attacks look easy. Inwardly, she cursed at herself. She’d tried to be showy and look good instead of going for the simple but effective solution, just like she’d been reprimanded for time and time again. She made a mental note to herself that just because she was a master, that didn’t mean anything out here. Kiryu’s assault was impressive, and Caffey was hard pressed to respond. Her eyes snapped closed, and she relied on her intuition to guide her, as it had many times before. No more showing off, she was purely serious now. Intuiting Kiryu’s attacks, she deftly weaved in and out of each of them, but even so she felt a series of blows land on various points of her body. They didn’t hurt nearly as much as she expected, but now she felt... Slower. It was like her ki didn’t know how to travel her body anymore. She’d have to make sure she ended this fast, before Kiryu managed to hit her with something like that again. The ki orb Kiryu had thrown, she easily and deftly moved out of the way of, as she did for most of the series of energy blasts he sent her way. The tail end of the series of blasts managed to overwhelm her, and despite her best efforts to continue weaving between the blasts, it managed to catch her in the shoulder. “ The fifth tenant of the Cobra School! Dodge with the speed and grace of the Cobra! Still, though, I have to say, good moves, man. Pretty rare that someone can dodge my opening salvo and hit me! Good job. Sorry to say though, I’m gonna have to end this one fast. Let’s see how long you can last, yeah?” With those words, Caffey charged forward again, letting loose another salvo of attacks, her hands becoming a blur of movement as she used her ki to increase the speed of her blows as much as possible, starting with a quick series of punches, and ending with another uppercut.

Kiryu whistled. Caffey had managed to dodge a good chunk of his salvo with her eyes closed. Keeping in mind that she was dealing with advanced ki powers that she, and no one in this village, had probably ever seen before... well, Kiryu was more than a little impressed. "I couldn't have dodged that if I wasn't using some of my special techniques. To have your body trained to such a high level... it's spectacular. Though I will say, I hope you don't think I'm going to make it easy for you! I've never had anyone question my stamina before!"At those words, a couple of giggles broke out among the crowd, though for the life of him, Kiryu couldn't figure out why. Had he said something funny? Kiryu brushed it aside; he had to focus, or Caffey's attacks would have him down and out. Kiryu's ki ball showed it's worth, outlining Caffey's incoming attack. As Caffey tried another uppercut, Kiryu slipped to the side and extended his palm, firing off another couple of blasts of energy. His ethereal armor repeated it's attack from last time as well, an energy tendril lashing out at Caffey. It had worked before... hopefully Kiryu would be able to land another few shots. The current defensive energy orb winked out, so Kiryu started another in it's place, hoping to avoid Caffey's lightning quick strikes for as long as possible.

Caffey had missed again? That just made her angry. In the later years of her time in the Cobra School, she’d become accustomed to hitting nearly every attack, even against some of the masters. More than anything, she was angry at herself. She was letting this guy make a joke out of her? She was supposed to be the next Cobra master, she’d been called ‘The Cobra Prodigy’ since she was 8 years old, and she still couldn’t land a hit. She found that immensely upsetting. Caught up in her anger, she only barely managed to dodge the next series attacks, which was much the same as the previous. Once again, a tendril of energy lashed at her, and once again she effortlessly sidestepped it… And would have sidestepped directly into one of Kiryu’s ki blasts, had her heightened senses not warned her ahead of time, though it was too late to dodge. Instead, as a last ditch effort, Caffey braced herself, and concentrated her aura on her forearms, bringing them up in front of her face to block the blast. It had the desired effect, and it managed to absorb that blast, leaving her with just enough time to dodge out of the way of the next one. “ I’ve been training with the Cobra School since I was five years old.” Caffey said, her anger only barely audible in the tone of her voice. “ I’ve been toning my body for martial arts since before I can remember. You might have good stamina, but there’s no way you can outlast me.” Caffey could hear the crowd around them snicker once again, just as they had done to Kiryu. She was briefly confused, then returned her focus to the fight. She lunged forward again, moving in an irregular pattern, trying to catch Kiryu from an angle he wouldn’t be expecting, hoping desperately she’d hit him this time. She opened with a roundhouse kick, then let her momentum carry her body forward into yet another uppercut. Idly she realized how many Cobra sequences ended with an uppercut, but only momentarily, then her focus returned to the fight.

Despite the banter, Kiryu had to make sure that he was focsed. Caffey had upped the tempo of her attacks, and Kiryu had to move to keep himself healthy. His ki orb repeated it's previous process, following Caffey and outlining her incoming attacks. This time, as he bobbed and weaved, Kiryu formed ki blasts. He lobbed them out as he dodged, and they hung in the air behind Caffey. Again, she finished her combination with an uppercut, but this time Kiryu saw it coming well in advance. Kiryu hopped backwards, avoiding the strike, and once again his ki orb winked out of existence. "I believe you, but I don't think you've ever met anyone that can last as long as me! If this is any indication though, I can say that I'd probably love repeat sessions with you; my blood is definitely pumping!"Again, there were some confusing titters from the crowd, but Kiryu was too locked in to the contest to give them much thought. He decided to take a bit of a gamble; his energy armor, obeying Kiryu's mental command, shot an energy blast that erupted from just in front of Kiryu's torso. At the same time, he thrust his hands out and hooked his fingers toward Caffey, directing the two ki blasts that he had left hanging towards her. Hopefully, with all three attacks heading towards her simultaneously, she wouldn't be able to avoid them. Finally, another ki orb went out to defend Kiryu from Caffey's inevitable counterattack.

More attacks, more misses. Caffey was growing increasingly furious at her lack of ability to land a hit on her opponent. For all her boasting and blustering, the truth was that the Cobra Style didn’t deal well with prolonged fights, and she’d intended to end the fight at least by now. Unfortunately for her, that was clearly going to be impossible. Also unfortunately, Caffey had been warned against using any of the more advanced Cobra sequences in the outside world, and she had to abide by that. That was fine, she could still win, if she could avoid the next few hits, maybe her opponent would tire himself out. The crowd’s subdued laughter at Kiryu did not go unnoticed, but she had no time for them, and no longer had the patience to banter at Kiryu either. Once again, she tried to contort her body out of the way of ki blasts Kiryu was sending her way. However, just as she could remember being warned of as a child, her growing frustration with herself led to mistakes, and a minor misplacement of her foot caused her to stumble, directly into the path of one of the ki blasts. She continued her fall, going just under the next two, the one hit having just managed to clip her. She cursed to herself as she turned the fall into a hand spring. Using the momentum of that handspring, Caffey let her sky-blue aura wash over her once again, just before bringing her foot down in an intense overhead kick, aiming to stumble Kiryu enough to land her next attack; An elbow delivered directly to his stomach.

This time, even Kiryu's attack outlining ki-ball wasn't enough. He simply had no way of avoiding Caffey's rapid onslaught. Kiryu focused his mind, sharpening his senses. He was able to avoid the worst attacks, but still, one landed. Thanks to the armor he head conjured, it wasn't enough to do more than hurt, but she had definitely tagged him. "I'm glad I was smart enough to bring protection... I didn't think it would be nearly this hard, but you're really matching me stroke for stroke!"At this point, a couple of the people in the crowd were full on belly laughing, but again, Kiryu ignored it, focusing on the task at hand. His energy construct lashed out on more time, then faded, it's energy sent. Kiryu followed it up with a barrage of energy blasts; they weren't as strong as the individual blasts he had used before, but with any luck, these would be quick and spread out enough to hit the nimble young woman. His ki orb winked out, and his fifth and final one began to weave about. He really needed to make some headway... like, now.
