Kiryu stands at around 6 feet 2 inches, a bit taller than normal but far from hulking. He possesses a deceptively muscular build, as he is usually wearing loose, flowing garments that allow him unrestricted range of motion. Kiryu is handsome in a sort of bland, common way; his features are pleasant, not not particularly unique or noteworthy. An exception to that rule is the color of his eyes, a piercing emerald that makes his gaze seem intense at all times. Kiryu has black hair that he keeps short and styled, and is clean shaven.
Personality: Depending on the day you catch him, Kiryu could be relaxing reading a book, drinking with friends and watching a fight, or meditating in the mountains. Kiryu thinks of himself as something of a renaissance man, with a wide variety of interests, and at his core he is driven by one concept;
You must be kind.
Kiryu takes great pains to act with compassion and empathy. Although he delights in his skill, he delights in it for what he gains through the process of developing his prowess, as his martial mastery takes him to deeper spiritual understanding. He does not revel in might for it's own sake.
Kiryu, however, is not without a competitive streak. This mostly rears it's head with Kiryu "adopting" nearly everyone that is close to his power and skill as a friendly rival. He is gracious in victory, and values close contests, but utterly loathes getting trounced. He tends to hold grudges, not against people, but against terrible losses, and usually wishes to repeat such a contest in the future in the hopes that he has grown enough to overcome that challenge.
History: Ever since the Demon King Piccolo revealed himself, the people of the world have known that titans walk among them. Ever since that fateful time, when impossibly powerful aliens, demons and dark gods walked in the world, there have been those of humanity that have known how important it is to stay vigilant and to preserve and foster the idea of peace.
Over the last few centuries, members of the Crane and Turtle school, as well as other prominent martial artists and spiritual gurus, found common ground. Some of them went on to form their own school. They have been called many things by others; the Katsujinken. The Way of the Open Palm. The Order of the Gentle Fist. But amongst themselves, they have always referred to themselves as followers of The Path of Joy.
The Path of Joy first arose as a sort of amalgamation of several spiritual philosophies, while having one core tenet; "First, do no harm." They embrace the idea that martial arts, that power, is not a tool to dominate, but something to be used for peace. Over time, their martial styles blended into a sort of Anything Goes school of martial arts, but their focus is on non-lethal techniques.
The Miyazawa family, originally highly ranked members of the Crane school under Tien Shinhan, were instrumental in the founding of the Path of Joy. While their society is overseen by a council, many of the Miyazawa family have been looked to as de facto leaders of the group for quite some time. Kiryu Miyazawa, the latest scion of the family, shows all the promise of his ancestors. He possesses talent for the martial arts, and beyond that, he has flourished with his family and his other friends in the Path of Joy.
As a child, Kiryu lived a relatively normal life, growing up and going to a public school. The members of the Path of Joy do not cloister themselves apart; they live with regular people in communities. They do have their own strongholds and training grounds, and rather than engage in team sports or other more common activities, Kiryu has spent his life as a martial arts disciple. Despite his youth, he has already shown himself a more than capable martial artist, utilizing ki with the talent of a much more experienced practitioner.
Now an adult, Kiryu sees the value of having the skills and viewpoint he has and spreading that out in the world. As members of the Path of Joy always have, Kiryu plans to wander the world, seeking out new horizons and gaining more experience and deeper understanding. He's motivated by making friends, helping whoever he can, and gaining an even deeper insight into the world, and himself.
RP Sample: "Are you sure you've packed enough warm clothes?"
Kiryu couldn't suppress a smile. He was nineteen now, and had endured training missions on cold mountaintops with only himself and some sparring partners, but his mother was still worried about him. And probably always would be, he thought to himself. What was it they said? No matter how old you get, you're always your parent's child.
The sun moved out from behind a cloud, and a beam shone down through the window of the room that Kiryu and his mother found themselves in. As the room was only lit by a small lamp at this point, this more than doubled the level of illumination. Light revealed a room that, for once, did not need cleaning. In preparation of his sojourn, Kiryu had cleaned up in all the ways his mother had always asked him to, and a large travel pack sat on a perfectly made bed. Natsume, Kiryu's mother, had a worried expression on her face. She had looked like that more and more often since Kiryu had announced that he would be traveling.
"Of course, mother. And if I haven't I'll just buy some. It's not like we're destitute. And I've got all of my documents, and my wallet, and my phone and I'll be in touch all the time."
She sighed, then nodded.
"Your father is sorry he can't be here. With the bandits in the east..."
Kiryu nodded, chest a little tight. He had wanted his father to be here, but he more than understood. The Path of Joy had members all over the world, reporting trouble where they found it. A group of well armed bandits would be difficult for anyone but a very skilled fighter to deal with, and Kiryu's father, Kiibo, certainly fit that description.
"It's all right. I know he'd see me off if he could, but I know how important the work we do is. That's why I'm leaving, after all."
"I know. And I'm so proud of you. It's just... I'll miss you."
Kiryu needed no more prompting. He walked over to his mother and embraced her, allowing himself, one last time, to be a child.
"I'll miss you too, but I promise, I'll make you proud."
It had been a hell of a week.
Kiryu had been, if he was honest, a little nervous about setting out on his home. Sure, he had a safety net; he could always go back. That would be tantamount to admitting failure, however. Admitting that he couldn't cut it, couldn't be the person his family and his friends all thought he was.
Thankfully, that was not the case.
It had been a week of travel. Kiryu was essentially backpacking... as far as he felt like going. He had a map and was making his way from village to village, his path leading him ever eastward, towards Orange City. He'd visited a couple of times, but still, Kiryu was in thrall of the bustling metropolis, in part because the teachings of the Son family held so much sway there. He stayed in places for a day, or a night, earning a bed and some food by doing some odd job or another for a tavern keeper.
On the seventh day, he faced his first real test.
Kiryu came into the village of Carvahall in the early afternoon, and was shocked to see people looking emaciated and malnourished. Kiryu caught sight of a young girl clutching a roll of bread, and he went over to her. She already bore sunken cheeks and hollow, far away eyes, and a snarling, angry beast began to wake up somewhere deep withing Kiryu's chest.
Coaxing the girl with a bit of extra food, Kiryu got the story out of her. Bandits had come to this village a month ago, and had demanded tribute from the villagers, for "protection" against other bandits. They were taking such a heavy toll that the people were beginning to starve, unable to fend for themselves. The girl told Kiryu that they had a stronghold to the southwest, and that they came every day, to extort the people.
That was all the information Kiryu needed.
Later that day, the bandits arrived, a half dozen of them in a jeep, armed with automatic weapons. On the road they would have to drive to get into town, they found Kiryu sitting cross-legged and meditating.
"Hey! Get the hell out of our way!", one of them called. At this, Kiryu opened his eyes, and calmly made his way to his feet. He brushed the back of his robes off, then turned a placid expression towards the men in the vehicle.
"Were you men of peace, I would be happy to step aside for you. But, alas, that is not my Path. My Path has taken me here."
The men looked at each other, incredulous, and several of them pointed their weapons at Kiryu. One of them smirked and spoke.
"I bet he's off his nut! Last chance, weirdo. Move or we blow a bunch of holes in you!"
Kiryu shrugged.
"If this is where the Path leads, so be it. But you have a choice. You can leave. Take your men and go. Trouble these people no more."
The bandits, almost as one, stared at Kiryu as if he had grown another head. After a few moments, they began to laugh. All of their weapons turned on Kiryu, who heaved a heavy sigh, and moved.
None of the bandits could react anywhere near quickly enough. In the blink of an eye, they went from holding assault rifles to staring at empty hands. Kiryu stood, where he had been before, the bandit's weapons in a circle around him. He smiled faintly, and the bandits all blanched. One of them, either braver or stupider than the rest, came forward, removing a knife from a belt sheathe. He approached Kiryu cautiously, creeping forward with the knife extended in his right hand, a snarl contorting his features.
"Stupid tricks wont save y-"
The bandit was able to make no further sounds. He had tried to be clever, pouncing towards Kiryu in the middle of his sentence. Kiryu had moved, in what seemed a blur to the other bandits, forward and to the side, simultaneously striking his attacker's brachial nerve with a reverse hammer fist and his throat with spear hand strike. Kiryu had made sure to hold back, or the man would have been killed, but his arm was deadened and his throat was injured. He dropped the knife from suddenly limp fingers and staggered back, coughing and sputtering and fighting not to choke.
The rest of the bandits looked at Kiryu, stunned. He regarded them and though he still wore the same placid mask, a cold light gleamed in Kiryu's eyes.
"You see, this is where your Path has led you. You, who delighted in your power. You, who forced your will on others. You, who would take from your fellow man."
Kiryu moved towards the men. Some of them made for the truck. One of them decided to take a swing at him. Kiryu ducked the blow and moved to an odd side clinch, then drove his knee powerfully into the bandit's IT band. The sudden pain and injury dropped his opponent, who gripped at his thigh and howled in pain.
"Tell me. Since your Path has led you to this place, on this day... do you think you are receiving your just rewards?"
They revved the engine, and Kiryu, moving with alacrity, quickly called upon his reserves of ki to power his body. He wound up, then punched downward in a large, arcing blow, targeting the hood of the vehicle. The sound of the blow was a cacophony of rent metal, and the force of Kiryu's blow lifted the rear wheels four feet off the ground. The sudden bucking of the vehicle caused the men inside to cry out, and they lost whatever color that had remained in their faces as they saw that Kiryu's punch had gone entirely through the jeep.
"Tell me. Am I your reckoning?"
It didn't take long for Kiryu to disable the rest of them. He bound them in ropes, and gave them over to the villagers; they could administer whatever justice they saw fit. Kiryu then made his way to their compound, and found another jeep and much of the stolen food from the villagers. Kiryu loaded as much of the food as he could, then drove back to the village.
Kiryu drove slowly. It gave him time to think. He had wanted to harm those men, had wanted to pay them back for the suffering they had caused. He hadn't. Kiryu had only done as much as was needed to incapacitate his enemies with no permanent injuries.
But, by the gods, how he had wanted to do more. He had wanted to shatter knees and pull shoulders from their sockets.
But that was not Kiryu's Path. He knew that there would be more tests in the future. That he would face many decisions, many temptations and trials.
He could only try to prove stronger than them, and continue his Path.
