It would be all too easy, thought Kiryu Miyazawa, to do what everyone else was doing. To forget his troubles. To lose himself in the joy of the holidays, the spirit of giving. To bake cookies and broil ham and think of the perfect gifts for his mother and father.
A large part of Kiryu wanted to do just that. But he hadn’t even been able to enjoy a tropical vacation without a witch trying to behead him for the potent magical artifact in his possession. He wasn’t able to travel without the government tracking him down to deal with a giant Kaiju shark. He couldn’t even get on a boat without a robot taking him to fight high tech pirates.
Kiryu guessed that that aphorism was truth. That ‘may you live in interesting times’ was a curse, not a blessing
So for now, he waited. He meditated. And he hoped better days would come soon.

Aytmm1rb1d100Juniper watched from Oolong’s Grand castle, that was on top of a natural elevated stone structure thirty two meters from the city, and it overlooked the sports arena of the Ice Block Academy’s winter event. This was the first time she witnessed so many competitors playing in freshly shaved ice to imitate snow and ice block carving. Growing up she always held an interest in Duke Lancelot, the undefeated champion of ice block carving that overthrew Duke Glacier from his seat, and the shiny gold belt around his waist was worthy of admiration. While she was planning on sitting out from the event, being part of the Tea clan, she figured she could sneak out and participate anyway. Dressed in common clothing she put on a pair of red glasses with missing lens. The Tea Princess did not need them but it was her way to attend the event in disguise, Hachi her devoted follower nestled on her white woolly hat, between large silk flowers that adorned her head, and signed up as ‘Hachiko’ with event staff instead of her real name. On the icy mounds of ice, she noticed a young teenage boy meditating on top an ice block, and was informed by staff that they were partnered up. “Hey, are you Kiryu? Event staff said you needed a partner, you’re going to meditate your ice block into a sculpture? Watch my mystic skills in action!” Juni materialized her giant paint brush, Hachi spat out black ink into the air that hovered in mid-air, and she used the ink to manipulate it using her mystic powers to shape the ice block into an artistic form of ocean waves, leaving Kiryu sitting in the center like a pedestal. At Juni's words, Kiryu's eyes snapped open. He eyed the woman, saw her clothes, heard her down to earth greeting... and immediately flushed, his cheeks flashing crimson as Kiryu realized precisely how ridiculous he must look perched on top of a giant block of ice.
Kiryu unfolded his legs, levitating himself up and away from the block a bit before floating down. He nodded towards the woman, noting her appearance. As a matter of course, he checked her power level, filing away her apparent strength for later reference, if he need it. He smiled somewhat self deprecatingly, raking a hand through his dark hair.
"Yeah, that's me. Sorry, I was lost in thought. I used to read these books about these artists that could just... see what they wanted to sculpt, within the stone or clay or whatever it was they were sculpting. So I guess it wasn't so much like they were forcing something into being, it was more like the were freeing what was already there. I guess I thought that if I got zen enough, some inspiration might come to me. But I feel kind of empty, to be honest. Like..." Kiryu trailed off.
Like an empty vessel.
At that, Kiryu held out his hand and called upon his power. Immediately, lines began to form in the ice, outlining the shape that had coalesced in Kiryu's mind; a stylized, angular version of an amphora, an ancient vase-like vessel.
"There," said Kiryu, "What do you think about that?"
It still needed to be carved, and there was a lot of room for addition or embellishment, but the general shape was now there. If the newcomer wanted to try something else, Kiryu was game, but this was the only thing that was coming to his mind at the moment.

“I put my name down as Hachiko, so my family would not notice that I signed up for this event, my name is Juniper. Nice to meet you, Kiryu.”
Juniper blinked her cobalt blue eyes and smiled at the fact that he enjoyed reading, “I have been studying the Four Arts of Scholar Society. Masters of Hua, that is to say painting, do meditate before they create their masterpieces, so you’re not far off from doing the same.”
The mage began cutting away at the pedestal in the center of the waves, utilizing his magic to shape it into an amphora, and he kept it rather simple as far as she could tell.
“Hmm, well looking at your controlled ki energy by carving the ice, I can see that your root and heart chakras do need improvement. It is part of the reason you feel out of place. Perhaps, when you’re not busy, you can have a mystic like myself help you recover some balance.”
The ice sculpture was near complete, the last step was to polish it, this time it changed from it’s opaque to a clear glistening finish. Juniper painted out a second sigil that caused the ice to glitter and simulate the ocean waves almost as if it was moving around the amphora at the center.
“To be honest, I can tell this is your first time, but with practice you can someday compete against Duke Lancelot as he is the undefeated champion for twenty five years… in Tundra Village. Everyone thinks the judges base it on design but it’s actually the method that gets judged and the complete ki control to form a shape from ice.” Juniper put away her giant paint brush in a different dimension with a motion of her hand, “It does take two to finish on time. This was quite fun, thanks! ”
