“Hmm. The moon is shining brightly tonight…”Indeed, the silver light of the moon shone its even way through the trees of the woods and onto a trail. It was a rather well-travelled trail, more than suited for any would be traveller to traverse through, as long as they minded the wild animals. You didn’t want to anger an animal. No matter how docile that herbivore might seem, its horns could easily penetrate the soft human flesh. And then, it would take long for help to arrive; longer than what a normal human might survive. Fortunately for Anshen, she wasn’t a normal human. Nay, she was what people called a monster… it was used in a derogatory fashion far more often than what one might consider appropriate, but it was her reality. She was used to it. In fact, leaving the Western Lands was one of the oddest experiences of her life. The further away she went from that… accursed place, the more she felt like an actual human. Well, that was a bit of an exaggeration. There were still whispers of her as she went around, people glancing at her as she walked the streets, or avoiding interaction with her entirely. But these whispers were not declaring her the child of a demon who would destroy the world. No, they either remarked her odd appearance with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. People feared the different, for it was something they didn’t know, Anshen couldn’t blame them for that. She was just glad people looked her in the eye when she spoke to them. Well, most people, anyway. Unfortunately for her, she couldn’t quite afford to travel by any sort of sophisticated means, like a car or a bus. Instead, she had to go everywhere by foot. It was… interesting, to say the least. It used up a lot of energy, but she found it liberating, in a way. But her muses were cut short by the rumble of a hungry beast. A noise would unsettle even the steeliest of souls, it was as if a great and terrible monster had awoken to feed, eating the entire world in its hunger. She stumbled back, clutching her stomach at the inevitability of that awful sensation. That noise was coming from her. Anshen gritted her teeth. She… she… She was hungry. Another rumble, and a groan of misery from the small lady. Fortunately for her, it’d be a simple task to find something to eat. After all, she was in the middle of the woods. She licked her lips, already anticipating the meal she’d have. Now, to hunt… The deer’s ears twitched, looking up from its spot. It heard something, and it was looking around for whatever it was. Unfortunately for it, it never saw a tail slam coming. Anshen’s thick tail snapped out and hit it square in the face, rocking its head and splattering blood. Of course, Anshen was in the vicinity, and so she was victim to a bit of it. She twitched… then licked her lips. Tasty. She wondered why humans didn’t enjoy raw meat, though she supposed their bodies weren’t quite made to handle it. But her body was well-suited for this task. She walked towards the dead deer, leaning down and… She looked up, horn and eyes glowing blue causing a sharp contrast to the blood on her face. She was being watched, and the watcher made no attempt to hide his presence, a traveller looking at her as if the fear of the gods had struck him. It may as well have. “M-M-M-M-!” Whatever he wanted to say, he couldn’t get it out, terrified as he as. He just about soiled his pants, from the looks of things. Anshen gritted her teeth. Her sharp, serrated teeth. Though unintentional, this only worsened the situation. She wasn’t aware of this, though, thinking of a way to try and explain to the man that she wasn’t going to kill and eat him. Sighing, she finally opened her mouth to explain. “H-”“AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!! MONSTEEEER!! RUN AWAY, RUN AWAAAAAAAAAAAY!!”Another sigh from the monster girl, shaking her head as the man ran off faster than she’d seen any normal human run. How annoying. Well, at least she wasn’t attacked, or anything. She hoped that never happened. But with that out of the way, she turned back to her deer, pulling out a knife to carve out a chunk of it for better eating. That, and she didn’t like deer skin. Caffey

The outside world had proved to have countless surprises, things that Caffey never thought she’d see in her life, and the woods were, so far, the most shocking and wonderful thing she’d found. Growing up in the desert, and having never left it, she’d rarely seen greenery in any appreciable amount. The dojo had had a garden but, even so… This was something else, something amazing. Her usual travel partner Kiryu was off doing something or other that Caffey hadn’t found particularly interesting, so she’d packed a bag of food and decided to spend the day exploring the surrounding area, seeing new things, and being absolutely fascinated by the diversity that the planet had beyond her small desert home. Even the first tree Caffey had seen had been moderately interesting, being as she’d never seen one before, but an entire forest? That was absolutely amazing. She was happy to have made the decision to explore today, hopefully she’d finally get a calm day to relax and just take in the sights. The lean girl continued her wandering, fascinated by even the most minor occurrence within the woods, everything here was new to her. Her journey through the trees never ceased to entertain the woman, and it seemed that every few steps she’d see some new animal she’d never seen before. Fascinating. So much animal life, surely it was much easier for people to sustain themselves here than in the desert, they must be able to eat so much more varied than she’d grown up eating. This level of variety was, honestly, hard to believe. The more she explored, the more she felt almost… Overwhelmed, but ultimately, she felt peaceful enough. Her peaceful walk was suddenly and rudely interrupted by a scream in the distance. While she was too far away to clearly understand what had been said, she could tell that whatever it was, it wasn’t good. Her attention snapped in that direction, and she took off, running at a speed that most people could only dream of. It wasn’t long before she’d found where the shouting had come from. Or, rather, until she bumped headfirst into a terrified looking man who was hurriedly running in the opposite direction of the noise. She quickly got to her feet, a practiced motion from a life spent as a martial artist, and helped the man to his feet. “ Whoa there!” She said, loudly enough to pierce the man’s terror and get him to look at her, “ What’s going on here? Why are you running? What happened?” She quickly placed a firm, but non-threatening, grip on the mans arm as he attempted to run again. “ Calm down. Take a breath. Close your eyes, find your center, and tell me what happened.” She said, echoing the words she’d often heard from the masters raising her. “ M-M-Monster!” The terrified hiker finally managed. “ I saw a monster! It k-killed a deer, and it looked right at me! It was going to kill me too!” The man began frantically pointing in the direction he’d come from. The yellow-clad Cobra Master gave him a gentle pat on the arm. “ I’ll take care of it. You go run home, stay inside for a while. It’ll be fine.” She gave him a reassuring smile. Unsurprisingly, the man quickly ran off. Caffey reached behind her, tying her hair up into the ponytail she sported while fighting. This was going to be fun.It took her another few minutes of searching, but she found the monster the man had seen. Setting her bag on the ground, Caffey watched as the small monster girl – Smaller than Caffey, she thought, which was rare – ate an animal she’d apparently killed. She called out. “Look, I know you need to eat, but I can’t have you going around terrorizing the locals. I’m going to have to make sure you leave now.” And with that, Caffey dropped into her battle stance.

Even as Anshen’s stomach rumbled once again, she wondered about that hiker… and in retrospect, it was probably a bad idea to let him go. She was fast enough to catch him, and didn’t actually look like a monster when gazed at up close. She was confident in her abilities to calm down the terrified man, and it would lead to far less problems than yet another tabloid article on the existence of the supposed shore sea monster. “Tch… he’d probably just die of a heart attack.” Were her mumbled excuses to herself for not doing exactly that. After all, if he saw her and still went to the press, it’d likely be a lot worse. They would have more information on her, and therefore more ways of telling exactly where she was. This was not at all what she wanted; most people had a poor view on monsters because the rest of her brethren were blundering idiots who worried only about food and usually had a penchant for violence. She couldn’t understand why they enjoyed human meat; the smell alone put her off. But that didn’t matter. She had a chunk of veal in hand and she wanted to eat it, and that’s exactly what she did. She munched into it with great gusto, the normally chewy meat being easily ground to bits by Anshen’s serrated teeth. But her happy munching was interrupted. She blinked and stopped, looking around once again… she sensed someone, this time a fair bit stronger than the random hiker. The person in question revealed herself, a girl barely taller than herself. She said… something, but Anshen wasn’t paying attention. Her horn and eyes began glowing as she sniffed the air. She smelled… food. The girl had food on her, and she wanted it. “Food…”She groaned out, slowly standing up and looking at the girl with the yellow jacket. Like a wild animal, she slowly walked towards her. “Must… feed…”She wasn’t going to eat the human. She just wanted whatever she had, licking her lips and baring her teeth in anticipation. Unfortunately for her, she once again forgot that it made her look like she was about to eat the person in question. A fight was at hand. Caffey 385 words/1,136 words total

Caffey’s words seemed to go unheard, as the small monster girl bared her teeth and began to approach. The beasts eyes and horn were glowing now, and that combined with the blood of its prey made it quite the menacing sight, leaving little wonder as to why someone as average as a hiker would have fled in fear. Caffey, however, was anything but average at this point, showing little fear in the face of such a sight. The Cobra Master reached out with her senses, trying to get some indication as to the strength of her opponent. She didn’t plan to hurt the monster too bad, she just wanted to scare it away, and, as she’d just now learned, the power difference between the two of them was significant, and it would surely have been rather easy to take the monster down quickly. Despite that, Caffey wanted a good fight, and didn’t have any intention of doing anything but scaring the monster off. Unfazed by the girl approaching her, even with teeth bared, Caffey calmly approached, keeping her hands raised in her fighting stance. “ Do you understand me? If you leave now, I won’t hurt you, but you can’t stay here.” She tried one last time to convince the beast to leave. As much as she looked to be a girl, it was clear to the yellow-clad girl that all this monster was concerned with was finding her next meal, and that she apparently intended it to be Caffey herself. If Caffey could manage to scare her off that would be great, otherwise she didn’t really have a choice in the matter of fighting.

Hunger was the driving force behind most creatures’ actions on Earth. It was why a predator hunted, why an herbivore ate plants, and why a human would work. So, they could eat. Of course, some ways are a lot more convoluted than others. But that didn’t matter to Anshen. Not at all. No, being around food for so long, getting hungry was having an effect on her. More importantly, the different smells of wonderful food made it so food was the only thing she could possibly think about. She was losing control of her energy, her horn glowing brightly with energy that Caffey would be able to sense focusing on there in a rather unstable manner. Her tail, similarly, also had the beginnings of energy, though not nearly as much accumulation as her horn. It seemed that her horn was the primary focus to harness her ki. Caffey’s warnings fell on deaf ears. The shore sea monster was hungry, and she would feed. Make people despair… over the delicious lunch box that they worked so hard to make being devoured in a second, of course. Eating people was icky and nasty. Eating proper food was tasty and nice. Suddenly, her horn flashed bright for a split second, and the monster girl charged at Caffey with sudden haste. As she approached, the human girl would be able to sense a sudden instability in the monster’s ki, as if it were about to blow. Within about five metres, Anshen reached for Caffey with both her arms outstretched, but energy suddenly accumulated in them and blasted their way straight at Caffey, blue, unstable balls of energy that exploded as soon as they touched something. Whether it was Caffey or the tree behind her didn’t matter. Caffey 292 words/1,428 words total

So much for the non-violent approach, huh? The monstrous girl had attacked Caffey, either ignoring or not understanding her words. Caffey was shocked by the speed of the monster, who swiftly closed the distance between them. She was again shocked when her foe closed the distance only to shoot orbs of ki at her rather than going for the expected melee attack. The Cobra Master cursed quietly at that sight – She’d never fought someone with control of their ki like that in the dojo, and had only minor training against Kiryu as learning experiences. Nevertheless, she would make do. Moving quickly, the yellow-and-black girl sidestepped the first of the energy blasts fired by her newfound opponent. “Oh, come on, I was trying to be nice.” She quipped as she prepared to sidestep the next blast. The forest, however, had other plans, and Caffey’s unfamiliarity with the environment caused her to bring her foot down in just the wrong place – find an exposed root instead of the expected solid ground – and stumble into the monster’s next attack. The orbs she’d avoided exploded on impact with the tree behind her, and the ones she hadn’t did the same upon impacting her. Between the impact and her poor footing, Caffey began to fall to the ground. In a fashion typical of the Cobra School, however, she used her own momentum to lead her into a handspring, turning the fall into another move in her upcoming sequence of attacks. Pushing off the ground with her hands, she let her fiery orange aura engulf her and brought her leg down towards her opponent in a fierce axe kick, quickly followed by a lightning-fast flurry of kicks from her other foot, once she’d landed on the ground.

It was as if she couldn’t quite control herself. Like a creature from some sort of horror film; eternally hungry, a beast that sought only to feed. That was her focus. She wanted food. Specifically, she wanted the food that Caffey was holding; human flesh smelled bad. Of course, it wasn’t like she left it clear. Any being with a sliver of self-preservation in them would be afraid of being eaten, after all. The monster didn’t seem to care whether she’d missed or not, merely pausing as residual energy seemed to bubble from her, the horn glowing in an erratic pattern as she looked at Caffey with those piercing eyes. They glowed with hunger, a beast from legend that had to eat. She walked forward, slowly. It seemed she could only muster momentary bursts of speed and was otherwise rather slow on the draw, though she kept her gaze on Caffey, ever steady. When Caffey approached, however, she displayed a degree of intelligence. Rather than taking it head on and focusing only on attack, she used the residual energy from her left-over attack to muster up a block, hunkering down as Caffey now hit a barrier of energy rather than the monster herself. Naturally, the sheer force of the kick would cause some damage, but she was far better off than she otherwise could’ve been. Sensing her turn, the beast focused her energy. Eyes and horns glowed brighter, but more than that, her tail started to glow. The tail that was… turning into tails? Indeed, her tail separated into eight tails, and energy seemed to be flowing into them. With a great rumble, she fired, extra power lending them a lot of strength. After the attack, her horn would suddenly glow and blast a ball of energy at her, clearly not being contained within the monster’s tiny body. Caffey 308 words/1,736 words total

The monster was stronger than expected. Caffey’s hit should have been solid, but the smaller girl had managed to block the worst of it. The resulting hit that landed must have still hurt, but Caffey knew the impact must have been greatly lessened. Still, she’d hit, and that meant she was well on her way to dealing with the monstrous girl before her. With any luck, she could finish the fight, eat her meal, and still have ample time to get back to town before sundown. Having thought she’d seen the best the monster girl could throw at her, Caffey had apparently grown cocky and ceased to consider the other girl an offensive threat, rather than just impressively strong defensively. At least, until the monster’s tail split, and everything started glowing, and more energy came heading straight towards Caffey… And then Caffey was thrown back, the impact of the blast was supremely impressive, she thought, just before her body collided with the tree behind her. Climbing back to her feet, Caffey gave a light laugh. “ That was AWESOME! I’ve never seen ki control like that! Maybe you’re smarter than I thought! Well… I still have to punch you again anyways, sorry about that.” Ki control on this scale was something the Cobra School had never truly mastered, and while Caffey had a loose understanding of the concept of it, she struggled with the actual practice. Mastery like that, from something that seemed more animal than human at that, was one of the most interesting things Caffey had seen since leaving the dojo. True to her words, however, Caffey charged forward again, leading with the classic Cobra-style uppercut, and following it up with a quick flurry of punches. She was going to endeavor not to injure her foe too heavily, now that she’d seen the impressive ki mastery, and instead prolong the battle, enough to possibly gain some kind of insight into whether the beast she was fighting had more of a semblance of intelligence than she’d thought.
