Kimonos, suits and ties; flowers, streamers and drinks; an evening coloured in gold and red – the gokudō at their finest. The Western Lands’ flavour brought to a penthouse that looked more like a manor made for a truly decadent atmosphere; a wealth indulged in two entwined styles. The lanterns hanging from the chandelier summed it up nicely, as gaudy as it was; a flourish of oriental upon a canvas of blood and money. This was where Maxine fitted in better than any other… to serve nothing but smiles was always a pleasure, and the festive mood was even enough to convince her to change from her suit to a black floral kimono to better respect the revered occasion. She was but a pawn in the world of the Duchies, but a pawn was invited nonetheless.
Maxine had served the family a lot recently; more than any of the other clans she had done contract work for – including the work that had led up to this event. A marriage between one of the Shinobu Clan heads and a minor clan’s heir had gone through perfectly, assimilating the smaller clan and consolidating the power of the Shinobu; a win-win. The android herself had no part in the matchmaking, of course, but she’d handled most of the behind-the-scenes work building up to the main event… it’d been a good job; much calmer than the last time she’d organised a wedding. And so, she could hardly refuse an invite to the afterparty, even if such occasions weren’t usually her style. And, maybe she’d also organised a happy coincidence in which the Zen Tea House’s bakery had been contracted for catering… well, she wouldn’t have this job if she wasn’t a little savvy.
And so, here she was; slipping through the crowd with a platter of wine glasses and sake dishes – her height was not helping right now given the usual size of demons, particularly in this family; but she glided through nonetheless. Even in sandals, she was a professional. A jaunt to the open bar, and the rehearsed dance began: Applewood shreds poured into a shallow glass jar, set ablaze with a match, and then capped. Dark rum stirred and aerated, before mixed with sweet vermouth and a spoon of liqueuer, and added to an awaiting glass already filled with ice. Two and a half dashes of bitters on top – just as the princess liked it – and stirred. Finally, strained into the smoke-filled jar, letting the thick cloud curve in the air before it was sealed and briefly swirled. Finally, it was ready to be served… with a pre-lit cigar, of course. Truly, a work of art… this was one of Maxine’s favourite jobs.
Now she just had to find her way back through the forest of living trees… this was not one of Maxine’s favourite jobs. It hurt her neck…
“Ah, Maxine, ironsides; come chat with the lucky couple!” called over a familiar voice – the young would-be prince of the family… bleached blonde hair, snazzy loose suit, and an award-winning smile. Pampered, but thankfully relatively lovable. If not much else. Naturally, Maxine met him with a deep bow, before facing the couple themselves; sitting by him across a luxurious sofa. Not the most oriental touch, but the array of empty bottles in front of them was something that crossed all cultural boundaries. On one side, the beaming (albeit red-cheeked and slightly unsteady) face of the lady of the Shinobu household; Yuzu-sama; a demon lady who had it all – horns, tail, tuft of fur around her neck to boot. No need for a fur shawl for this one. And on the other side, the more demure but sharp-eyed and sharp-minded heir of the Hoshino family; Seikano; looking somewhat more composed, albeit very out of place in this party atmosphere. A kindred spirit to Maxine. But, she’d been to plenty, and no doubt both of them would be seeing plenty more in the future.
The Shinobu Clan was no stranger to such events, especially as they continued to ride a financial high through recent years. Though often mocked as wannabe rivals to the powerful Oolong Clan, the Shinobu Clan had gotten a grip on racketeering amongst the private firms moving into the cities of the Western Lands from Pilaf and Capsule Corp’s nations – they had to learn to abide by the business culture of the West, and that made them easy targets for the Duchies. Ruled by multiple generations of Youkai with a smattering of Earthlings as well, the Shinobu Clan was still considered quite low on the social food chain among the Duchies in spite of their heritage and recent success… but, that never stopped them for dreaming bigger. And definitely never stopped them from partying hard on the way there.
“Good evening, Maxine-chan~! You look so good out of that suit! So pretty~!” cheered Yuzu, earning a slight smile and another deep bow from the android; “But, not as pretty as my adorable Seikano. Mm, but, maybe I can settle for both?”
“Now now, Maxine-san always has a lot of work to do. She did a lot for our wedding already! We should at least give her a break for a few days before you planning on dragging her around shopping again.” Scolded Seikano playfully, giving Maxine a respectful nod. “I look forward to working with you more in the future, in any case.”
“We handle the partying, and Maxine handles the wheeling and dealing.” Added the young prince; Kyoma; soon slipping a familiar smirk onto his face; “Her jokes are shocking, her dancing is abysmal, and she couldn’t swing a sword to save her life; but she’s good at getting things done.”
In spite of herself, the machine in question had to pause and restrain herself – her dancing was perfectly fine! And though the thought of being hauled through luxury clothes shops again made Maxine shiver ever so slightly, she remained all business. ”Thank you both for your kind words. It is my pleasure to welcome you into the Shinobu clan, Seikano-sama.”
Yes, all business as usual; even at a party. But then –
“Indeed, Maxine has served the family well in this matter. Though her hobbies are… tasteless, at best, she has proven herself to have her uses.” mused a voice from behind her – a certain yakuza princess, much to the android’s surprise. Had she had a few glasses before Maxine had gotten her cocktail to her? To hear a compliment from her was rather a rarity, much less such one without a stinger in its tail. Well, without multiple stingers in its tail. “The family chairman is waiting in the garden, android. I do not recommend leaving her waiting.”
The news made Maxine both a little scared and a little curious – the family head was a rather reclusive type, preferring to indulge in the Western Lands’ traditional arts and culture over getting involved in festivities like this… when she wasn’t plotting and backstabbing her way to the pockets of any company the clan could get its fangs into. The android had met her once or twice before while doing other work for her relatives, and the two got along rather well; but she had never been specifically requested by the clan head.
”I see. Understood, my lady. I will not leave her waiting.” replied Maxine, albeit once she had regained that tiny pinch of composure; and offered the drinks and awaiting cigar to the yakuza princess. She considered the lady – she seemed to be being serious; her mood even seemed a bit more dour than usual. Maybe she was annoyed by this news? Or, maybe she’d gotten another talking to by the chairman… ”I hope you all enjoy the night – though, I intend to be back soon. With more drinks, no doubt.”
Of course, that was met with some little cheers from both Kyoma and Yuzu; but Maxine could not spare the time to revel in the attention. Business before pleasure… and, the party atmosphere was a bit much for her in the first place; at least while she wasn’t actually in a serving role there. It hadn’t taken more than a few polite words to take up a serving platter despite that, but she doubted they’d let her get away with much more work than that. With another deep bow, the android took her leave. She barely caught herself from checking her non-existent suit jacket around instinctively…
Now, she had a snake to catch.
-------------------------------
Naturally, the garden was in the style of the Western Lands… but, unlike many of the other rooftop gardens across Oolong City, it wasn’t a dry landscape garden; there was no incorporation of any artificial features or a focus on stone or sand. Instead, it was a lush, ludicrous sight; a portrait of a stroll garden transplanted onto the building’s top. It was an absolutely ridiculous expense from the waterfall and winding stream to the various splices of moss species from across the land. And, from the penthouse’s exit onto the rooftop, across a little wooden porch – it was hard to believe that it was on top of an office building, rather than behind a shrine or tea house.
Though, speaking of a tea house; Maxine’s host was currently showing her class by going through one of those wondrous tea rituals. Perhaps to show off, perhaps out of routine; but the android could not help but wait and watch. She had trouble comprehending culture, much less such an impractical practice, but... she could not deny there was some special appeal to their motions and approaches. The candles lined along the sides of the low table danced in between the wind and the chairman’s motions in a slightly hypnotic display.
A tall and slender lady, whose age was totally unknown to Maxine… though she looked like she might be in her late twenties or early thirties, the machine knew better than to believe that a demon’s looks could tell their age. With a huge plume of purple hair that reached all the way to her ankles, albeit carefully combed and tied in a ponytail at the end, she ought to stand out. Among Earthlings, she might, but among demons, far less so. Maxine could take an educated guess that she was somewhere between the races given the clan’s history, but she was wise enough not to ask. There were even rumours she had some heritage linked to the Snake Princess mentioned in legends. But, the only truly inhuman feature she had besides her uncanny height was her square-shaped pupils… perhaps for some it might seem unsettling, but for someone who had LEDs for her own eyes it wasn’t even on Maxine’s radar.
Finally, those pale eyes turned to Maxine, while the lady nursed a mug of tea, and her signature smirk. Chairman Shinobu Karigane was not known for her sunny smile. “Come. I’m glad you got my message… my daughter has a long way to go. Take a seat. I would like to speak to you about an important matter.”
For many, hearing a greeting like that from your boss would be distressing; but Maxine would rather talk about business than anything else. Giving the deepest bow of the evening, the android carefully sat down opposite the chairman; both sitting in seiza on either side of the low tea table. Well… low for the demon. She had a foot and a half on Maxine, and then some. Even for the machine with so much experience, there was a flicker of intimidation. She appreciated people who were also all business… but, this was the gokudō.
“But first. You have been working for the Shinobu Clan – my clan – for many years now. We have many members, but few have tempered their ambitions so absolutely in the name of the clan like yourself. Even contractors are expected to have plots here. However, you have been loyal and professional regardless of your other dealings. Your part in opening negotiations between our clan and the renewable business that crept in from Central was particularly fortuitous for us. Thus, I’d like to voice my appreciation for that. I will not flatter you, however – I much prefer the company of samurai dreamers and easy-going thugs to wildcards like yourself.”
The lady raised a hand before Maxine could begin to consider a reply (or more likely another bow), and the door back to the penthouse opened – a waiter carefully brought out a bottle of sake and placed it on the table, despite the tea that had already been served. However, Maxine quickly realised her mistake. It was definitely no waiter… that was definitely a Shinobu family captain; an older man she’d seen overseeing shareholders’ meetings in the past. “So, let us change that.”
The android felt like a deer in the headlights. She knew what was happening, of course, but she never thought that a machine could be put in this seat.
Picking up the bottle, the waiter carefully poured the alcohol into a shallow dish before the chairman. She drank it with dignity, but at a firm pace; before pouring the drink again, this time herself. And so, the dish shifted to Maxine’s side of the table. She could not help but hesitate – but, after steeling herself, she obediently raised the dish. She had no need to drink beyond checking for tastes, but she knew that this was about something much bigger than having the honour of a drink poured by the chairman.
“To the future of the clan.”
”In the name of Shinobu…”
The smirk greeted her as she placed the dish down, placing it upon the pale purple paper that had been laid out while she was drinking. Quietly, Maxine wrapped it up, and carefully placed it in her kimono; held against her by her obi. The woes of not being in her suit, no pockets. Finally, the bottle was removed from the table by the family captain, giving a deep bow before vanishing into the building once more… and, judging by the muffled cheers, to an eager reception. Maxine wasn’t entirely sure if it was part of the ritual, or maybe just very good sake, though.
“Welcome to the family, Shinobu.” Remarked the chairman, giving a polite nod, before returning to that smirk as she took in Maxine’s expression; “But, before you panic, the paperwork is a little different… in light of your role as a contractor, and how useful it is to us, you are to be considered less of a child of the family and more of a… sister-in-law. An aunt. Ufufu. But, an honorary member of the Duchies nonetheless.”
This was definitely a new experience for Maxine. She was well aware of sakazuki – she’d even assisted in a few. But, she had long considered herself a possession of her original clan, and after it had fallen and later been assimilated into the Shinobu Clan, she still considered herself too lowly to ever be considered a member. She was a machine, not a person; she had never spilt blood or shed tears for the family – she had neither to even offer. ”Chairman… t-t-this is, a-an honour I do not deserve, b-but…”
“Enough, Maxine. I have sworn in layabouts and punks; we can certainly handle a machine.”
Standing up, the chairman gently walked towards the edge of the porch, before sitting down in front of the view of the garden. Maxine could only stare… she’d seen this scene before, certainly, but had never expected to be in it. Slowly, she eased her trembling legs, and joined her. However, the lady then stared at her, and patted her thighs, with a glimmer of a smile. And again. And again. And again. The android could only stare back in confusion, until she had her head forcibly shoved into a rather unbelievable lap pillow.
“Your awkwardness in matters beyond business or the barrel of a gun is as ludicrous as it is laughable, Maxine. Now, settle down, and let me talk to you. We’re alone for once, so you can drop the attitude… as will I.” spoke the lady, now from above. Relaxing was the last thing on Maxine’s mind, unsurprisingly, but… she tried. She really tried. Suffice to say, she had never been in this position before. “I like to know my trusted family better than just matters of business. It’s good for morale, and good for blackmail. So, please, speak your mind, Maxine. You call yourself a machine, but you blush and stutter. I’d like to know what’s behind that screen.”
The android had no response to offer. It wasn’t that she’d never been asked this before, but… she never had an answer. ”I am, indeed, a machine. All I have is the mission. My orders…” replied the girl, looking down with a unfamiliar sense of shame. ”I’m sorry. I don’t have any deep feelings.”
The distant reply from the android earned a frown from the chairman, but she remained resolute. “Is that so? You seem to have no end of troubles… don’t you have anything you are unsure about, or worried by? You were built to have feelings… I imagine that thought alone must unsettle you.”
Her troubles…
Her identity, as UN-11, or UN-06, or UN-10 – or, her fears for the Duchies’ future in the face of the bubbling power struggles – or, her insecurity about her usefulness; an old machine that can only grow older – or, her meaninglessness among so many powerful individuals – or, Two lying to her – or, the deception within her own coding – or, the Azure Dragoons, and the temptation of such like-minds; did she really compared to them at all? Or… or, or, or…
”…No, I… I do not have such feelings.”
She simply could not do it. Those words – were not meant for others.
”All that matters is my directives…”
Maxine was merely met with a sigh, though it was obvious the chairman didn’t remotely believe her. “I see. Well, I am here, if you ever need me… if I cannot offer assistance to my subordinates, I do not have much worth as a leader.” Mused the lady, totally dropping her defences for just a moment, as she watched Maxine’s dismal expression below her. “In that case… perhaps you’ll find my orders more comforting. I suppose it is unreasonable for me to assume a machine feels the same as a demon.”
Sitting up a little straighter, the chairman lowered her head, and regained that signature smirk - though, it was a little less intimidating from Maxine’s perspective. Similarly, Maxine’s attempt to look ‘professional’ while on someone’s lap was rather unconvincing. “Very well. A strange time for a business meeting, but I did promise as much. The Shinobu Clan, and the Duchies, I would go so far as to say, have a particular use for someone like you, Maxine.”
“Pilaf, Capsule Corp, the World Government, and the Demon Kingdoms – the embers of their conflicts and bickering are settling, and so a different kind of expansion is necessary. Though we continue to clash amongst our own clans, the Duchies cannot afford to push their borders further. Instead, we need that soft power. Investments, businesses, figureheads, and celebrities – they are what will drive power in the near future. So, someone who bears the will of the Duchies, but not the name of Duchess, will be quite convenient for us… primarily, we need someone to offer a hand in matters in the other lands, and scout groups that could be our allies. Those who don’t call themselves loyal to a land; wildcards like you… they will be the most ideal assets.”
“I don’t care for your work for the Oolong and White Cats Clan, nor your travel or other jobs; so long as you remember this particular directive. For the Duchies, not just the Shinobu Clan. That said – if you find time to help organise another marriage or two, then I’d appreciate it. Ufufu.” With that troublesome giggle, the lady ended her speech; and earned a nod from her ally. Well, as much as one could nod while on her back. “As your first objective – I would like a pair of ears in the World Martial Arts Tournament. Not for the sake of winning, nor even a presentation; but instead just to get a bead on the newcomers. But aside from that – do you have any ideas on where else it would be worth snooping? I imagine I may be able to pull some strings, if it would assist…”
The android hesitated. In spite of such a clear directive, she hadn’t many leads to go on… at least, aside from a certain pair of blue eyes that hung in her mind. The Colonel… to have an agreement with the Dragoons in uncertain times would be a step forward. For the Duchies, and for Maxine’s curiosity. Someone who appreciated their gear, and saw the worth in her age…
”…I have some leads, but I will keep you updated if they prove useful.” She decided to play it safe for now. ”Thank you, chairman. I… p-perhaps it is above my station, but – I will not forget this honour. To be an android, yet given a rank such as this…”
She was silenced by a finger to her lips. “You’ve served as well as any other. Cyborgs, too, have been part of the clan, so a pure android… is not that much different. There many kinds of demons, with many kinds of powers, and many ways of thinking. So, a machine is fine by me. And, as your chairman, I make that decision.”
Falling silent for a moment, Maxine began to sit up – but was forced down again.
“For once, Maxine, please rest. I don’t particularly want to go back to the noise of the party… it’s not good for my reputation. So, humour me and relax. Then at least I have an excuse.”
…how ludicrous. A machine had no need for rest. The most she could truly do is pretend to sleep. And yet… this position wasn’t uncomfortable. Soft, and a sense of… security. A flicker of a voice came through her system, faint hints of someone long ago. A kind smile, a faith in her no matter her age or what she did, a care for Maxine, rather than the machine around her… a whisper slipped through her lips, barely audible above the muffled merry-making, the waterfall, and the slice of nature before them. It was unconscious; automatic… unbecoming of one who called themselves a machine.
”Duchess…”
-------------------------------
”Thank you for your support, as always. I apologise for having reserved my kimono on such short notice.”
Finally back in her suit, Maxine prepared to leave the Shinobu Clan’s headquarters – hopefully the chairman was not as aware of her refusal to buy her own kimono as she was of her achievements. It was rather convenient to loan one anyway, since it was so far from her own tiny apartment, much less the Zen Tea House. She’d have to head home next, since she didn’t want to be driving around with a tiny priceless dish too much… breaking it immediately after being inducted would be a tremendous failure on her part.
Speaking of tremendous failure, she soon found herself a foot off of the ground.
”Kyaaa!”
“Caught you, rat.”
It was, unfortunately, a familiar nickname. The one member of the Shinobu Clan she hoped to avoid… the local heavy, Hatsuka. She looked a little similar to the chairman, with grandiose purple hair and only a few hints of her demon heritage… but plus another foot, and a figure that still looked unreasonable even at her height. The complete opposite to Maxine… and all too happy to remind her of it. They ought to get along; they were both professionals in similar roles working for the same boss – but, her approach was completely different. Maxine was business first, Hatsuka was… business end of a sword first. And would then lecture Maxine about it, like she was her junior. And then get very drunk.
“I hear you’re part of the family now… good for you. But, that’s all the more reason to be on your best behaviour. I expect to see even better results from you in the future… I’ll be watching, now more than ever.”
Hanging off of the ground by her collar, Maxine could only awkwardly nod while looking away evasively – s-she really wasn’t good at handling this lady. Did she hate her? Did she like her? E-Either way, she put Maxine on edge all the time… ”Y-Yes, well, I always aim for the best possible r-results, you know…” mumbled the android in response – which, apparently was good enough, as she was gradually dropped back on her feet. At least she wasn’t in Giant Form like last time…
“Now, I’ve been told that you slipped away before anyone could give you your credentials. Your clan ID, most importantly. It may look old-school, but it’s got all the data on it electronically, so don’t roll your eyes.” Lectured Hatsuka, passing a small violet trinket down to the android – it didn’t even have her picture on it; instead looking like a finely embroidered onamori. “It’ll get you into your new room here, too; as well as into any of the other services you might want to use on the headquarters’ premises. Much more useful than your business cards, hm? You really should make them digital instead, Maxine…”
The news of a room made her raise an eyebrow, but it did make some sense. Well, it’d remain to be seen if it was nicer than her apartment, but it’d at least give her an alternative if she wanted to sneak out of the Zen Tea House for a while. Shortcake was a harsh mistress, as wise as she was, and Misaki lecturing her on plants had begun to get a tiny bit old. Err, though, was that better or worse than dealing with the Shinobu Clan’s colourful characters? If only she’d gotten the chance to sign up to some gentlemen’s club instead of a matriarchy… s-she couldn’t help but always be on edge here.
“The other part is that the chairman traditionally gives a personal gift for new members. Usually it’s just something nice and small, but… this was a bit of a last minute decision, you know. In truth, she only raised it last night. So, we have had to improvise. Not that I think you’re one for bonsai trees and fans anyway. Alas, we didn’t have any engraved revolvers for you, hm?”
Maxine frowned, and far more bitterly than usual. Too close to home. Which was part of what made Hatsuka such a pest. ”P-Please keep it p-professional.” squeaked the girl, having to crane her neck up now that she was on her feet. Otherwise, her composure was only going to get catastrophically worse… demons. Geez. No, in fact, she had to take control! She was on the same rank as her now, after all, so she should speak up. This was her chance! ”While we’re both here, however, I’d like to ask that you restrain your drinking habits… those texts are – not unpleasant, but I don’t think they’re very professional, and particularly not for a –“
But, the android didn’t get to finish, as she was lifted off the ground once again, but this time being slammed into the floor afterwards.
”Kyaaaaa!”
…this time, however, it was followed by a thorough licking. Guh… she was terrible with animals.
Gradually, she peeled herself up from under the immense hound, though she cast a glare at Hatsuka rather than the eager canine. “Oh, he broke his leash? Hm, I underestimated him.” Mused the lady in question, tilting her head in bemusement, but then turning her attention back to her co-worker-come-plaything. “Your attacker, rat, is named Masumi. Originally, he was a Namekian war hound – hence the hidden ki and size – that was… liberated, as a puppy, from one of their groups to the north. He was to be a gift to our local princess, but, as you might imagine, she considered him bad for her optics. So, we needed a home for him, and… you know. It was a convenient coincidence.”
To say Maxine was unimpressed was an understatement. She didn’t like animals, much less a wolf-hound that stood more than half her height! He looked like some sort of wolf-husky hybrid, quite slender and sturdy but a bit fluffy as well. However, as she inspected him further (while he just sat there panting and starry-eyed), she noticed a few clues… particularly, that glass eye. ”…I have no use for a pet, Hatsuka. I have constant business to attend to. I wouldn’t be able to make enough time for him, even if I wanted him.”
“I thought you’d feel a bit more comradery. He made quite some trouble for some of our street-level punks after the princess turned up her nose, and came out of it quite a lot worse for wear. About as worse for wear as those subordinates did. So, the chairman was impressed, and insisted he be – fixed up, for our own use. Thanks to that, he’s quite… low maintenance. You and he can bond over missing an eye, and being a bit more machine than man, hm? Well… he’s got more man than you, I’d say.”
”I see. And what use would I have for him, then? I… do not find animals particularly charming.” Maxine eyed the canine carefully. S-She wasn’t being swayed! She didn’t have time for pets. At most, she’d consider a bird, or a cat, and purely for the company. No, she didn’t like animals, so they didn’t count either. Even if the chairman asked really nicely!
“Hm. Well, as a Namekian war hound up near the Northern Demon Kingdoms, he has some latent ki abilities; similar to some of the exotic species that are still around in the Southern Islands. He’s very obedient, and can suppress his presence – rather similar to you, Miss Rat. He’s… well, smart might be too strong a word, but let’s say he’s quick to learn instead.
And… he knows a few tricks already. I think I can afford to demonstrate… kuhuhu.”
Ah… having a dangerous laugh seemed to be a running theme in this family; alongside the ludicrous purple hair. Maxine’s hand slipped to her hip, wishing she’d brought her gun in spite of the occasion.
“Masumi! Catch.” With an idle toss, the lady threw a small object to the dog, who caught it with ease. Maxine couldn’t quite track what it was from here –
<Two, magnify that for me – I don’t plan to die on my first day.>
<Wow, Eleven’s scared of a dog.>
<It’s armed! P-Probably!>
“Masumi. Take.” An outstretched finger pointed at Maxine. Followed by a familiar shing of a unsheathed blade –
Thankfully, Maxine was only met with a blunted steel plate to her throat after she was tackled to the ground again, but she accepted that Hatsuka had a point. She’d never expected to deal with a dog wielding a knife, let alone one who managed with relative ease and efficiency.
“I see that light in your eyes, my rat. I knew if anything would do the trick, it’d be cool knife skills…”
”T-That’s hardly it. It’s a matter of efficiency. If he’s that dextrous, I could see some potential. Perhaps not an extra pair of hands, but an extra hand that few expect is impressive.”
“Is that so? Do you think he’d be worthwhile on the field? He was originally meant to just be a pet, but…”
”That’s correct. His suppression, especially…”
“So, I should hand him onto the prince instead?”
”I-If that’s not planned, then I’m quite s-sure I could work with him!”
A hand fell upon Maxine’s head, while the ever-eager Masumi circled the android’s heels. “Kuhuhu. Never change, rat.” Remarked Katsuka, patting the machine’s head – condescending, or endearing; Maxine didn’t appreciate it! Not much, anyway. “I shall finish sorting out the papers, then. For now, you two should get to know each other instead. “
”It’s just a trial period!”
“Right, right. Until our next job, Maxine. If you’re good, I’ll let you cry on my lap next time…~”
While Katsuka strode away with a smirk (Maxine was getting the hunch she was related to the chairman by now), Masumi continued to vie for his new owner’s attention. Finally, she cautiously approached the canine… she was not good with animals.
But, maybe it was time she learnt a little.
”Nice to meet you, Masumi. Let’s look forward to a profitable relationship.”
The sight of Maxine giving a deep bow to the dog left the admin staff member who’d been silent all this time giggling to himself, but Maxine was nonplussed; and Masumi just seemed to be happy to have her attention. Seeing that missing eye, she felt a little spark between them – maybe a machine and a demon were oh-so different, but maybe a machine and an animal had more in common. Pretenders to the world of sentient life… yet, pets could still be so loved.
Maybe she had a lot to learn, rather than Masumi…
”Masumi. We have our mission. Let’s move out.”
She even got a bark in response – that really did earn a rare smile from Maxine.
She just had to hope Shortcake did not mind the extra company.

Maxine couldn’t quite track what it was from here –
<Two, magnify that for me – I don’t plan to die on my first day.>
<Wow, Eleven’s scared of a dog.>
<It’s armed! P-Probably!>
