A few loose strands of hair whipped in the wind as Riku flew down the coastline, looking for a likely place to land. He had only recently started flying and the subtleties of landing were still lost on him. The shore below him seemed more rocky than sandy, like the beaches of the southern isles that he had come from. In the distance he saw an old light house coming up... Perhaps I can try to land there? He turned his scanners on and magnified his view of the building. It looked solid, but there were no signs that anyone had been there in quite some time. He started descending and pulled up his HUD to send Kiryu a message. Which contact would you like to message? KOMA KIRYU VIDAR ....Contact Kiryu Selected. Master Kiryu,
I have arrived at Pilaf Land and I am landing at a lighthouse on the coast. I am including the navigational data and location in this missive. I will await you there as instructed and look forward to learning more under your tutelage...Riku attempted to slow down and aim for the outer balcony where the keepers of the past would have walked to clean the glass. Instead, he crashed through the glass and bounced against the floor and started rolling across. He was starting to slow... when he reached the other end of the room and started falling down the stairs. Flares of pain were accompanied by grunts as Riku finally shook of being stunned and started grasping at things to stop himself. About halfway down the spiraling stair case, he latched onto the rail and jerked to a stop. He lay there, panting for a moment and noticed a new message on his HUD. Message sent. Video Attachment from live feed added!Riku groaned and pulled himself up from the uncomfortable edge of the stair digging into his lower back. He gave himself a once over and carefully started walking down the steps. He had a few bruises... but on the whole the thing that had probably been the most wounded was his pride. His metallic body had been partly responsible for that he suspected it had taken the brunt of the impact. He rolled his shoulders, trying to work the stiffness out of them as he sighed. He hadn't even known he could attach a live video feed to an email. At least he had learned that, for whatever good it would do him. Now his master was going to seem him as a fool; who knew if he would even want to teach him at this point? Riku reached the bottom of the lighthouse and pushed the door open gently and closed it behind him. He bent over and cleared a spot by the base of the tower and settled in, leaning against the tower and watching the dark surf roll in to pound against the jagged spires of rock rising in defiance of the waters weathering touch. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, he began to center himself as he waited. He needed to be in the right frame of mind to be taught... he was too rattled right now. [532/532] Kiryu@orizuru

What the hell am I doing?
Ever since he had gotten a bug up his ass to host a tournament, the voices had been gnawing at Kiryu Miyazawa’s subconscious. No, not actual voices; this was nothing mystical, or any sign of a chemical imbalance. This was merely a manifestation of sudden self doubt.
Kiryu was, at his core, an insightful and intelligent young man… but he was still a young man. He was barely old enough to legally drink in most areas. And here he was, presenting himself as some sort of expert, some master that could guide other warriors.
Who the hell did he think he was? He had done a keg stand two weeks ago, for pete’s sake!
Kiryu was shaken out of his reverie by a notification on his smartphone. He pulled out the rectangular device and saw it was from Riku, the cyborg samurai that he had decided to make one of his disciples. Apparently he was ready to meet up… and there was a video attached. Kiryu clicked on the attachment, wondering what it would be… and then nearly busted up laughing.
This, at least, set him at ease. So he wasn’t perfect. Who cares? No one was. His mind set at ease, Kiryu stepped into the sky, and made his way towards Riku.
Kiryu’s silvery emerald aura blazed around him as the lighthouse came into view. Kiryu has not bothered to suppress his power as he flew over, wanting to get there sooner rather than later, so anyone in the area paying attention would have felt a power level over forty thousand streaking across the sky. He could sense Riku’s energy and he slowed, controlling his descent and landing softly. He grinned over at Riku.
“Man, I have to tell you, it’s a little bit of a relief to have someone else have a little trouble with the Sky Dance Art! Zaru seemed to do it as naturally as breathing… Tiger Lily, too. Took me some time to figure out the trick of it.”
There. Elephant in the room addressed… and there’s no lie. I sucked at it at first.
”I’m glad we’re getting the chance to do this, Riku. But don’t worry about any of that “Master” stuff. I’m just a guy with some skills that wants to help like minded warriors along the way… and help myself, to. On that note, one of my problems when I was starting out was that I looked too much at my destination. It’s like when you learn to drive; focus too much on what’s in front of you and you can lose your position. That, and your shoulders. When you’re flying, you go where your shoulders are set, not where your head is looking. Try keeping that in mind and I think you’ll have a much easier time of it. And remind me to tell you about when I was first figuring this out and fell into the dumpster behind a Burger Bell.”
Kiryu chuckled ruefully, wincing in mock distress as he recalled the odor. He rolled his neck from side to side, and then began to stretch, limbering up for the contest to come.
”Before we get too into this, I thought maybe we could get to know one another a little bit better. Truth be told, you won a lot of respect from me for the way you handled yourself in my little impromptu tournament. That kind of care for your opponent is rare, as well as the ability to sort of switch your ferocity on and off without wanting to actually permanently injure someone. You already have my respect.
So tell me about yourself. I’ve got the feeling that you’ve got a heck of a story to tell. Guys like you don’t just come out of nowhere.”

Riku nodded in greeting to Kiryu and then felt his cheeks color slightly as embarrassment shot through him at the mention of the Sky Dance Art. He cleared his throat and mumbled wryly, "It is indeed not... a natural talent of mine. I have managed to gain a bit of control during the flight... I usually fly the direction I want to now, and almost never end up flying upside down with my head hanging down anymore. It will come in time one hopes." Riku turned to face Kiryu as he continued in his earnest way to explain his view on their relationship. He asked him not to call him master... but according to Riku's upbringing he merited the title as his instructor. He put it to the side for now for later consideration. He listened to his master's explanation on flying mechanics and nodded thoughtfully nodded. A firm but not rigid posture and careful muscle control... and lots of practice and dedication. I can do that. "I see... thank you, Mast... erm.. Kiryu. My apologies, in my time, when someone was your teacher in the arts, they were addressed so. I hope there was no one there to tape your... escapade into the Burger Queen. I empathize with your landing, however." Riku leaned back against the lighthouse wall and his eyes unfocused as if seeing another place... or another time. His voice started soft and slowly reached almost his regular speaking tone, "It almost 1500 years ago, I was born to the third generation of a family that had been raised to the ranks of the samurai. My grandfather, Goto, earned it by standing over his wounded lord and killing 15 men while defending him with only his spear, despite taking many wounds himself. I was raised in a family that was samurai while my cousins and other family were still fishermen." "I will not go into too much detail but I was the general for my daimyo, Jiku, when he decided to rebel against the emperor at the time, the blessed Jianwen Tongzhi. We did well at first, we gathered allies and won several battles. Then, the emperor began actually taking us as a threat and he pressed the bulk of his might towards subduing us. We were outnumbered by several times over but I was able to manipulate them into mistakes and choose my battlefields to limit their numbers at first. As we were pushed back and lost territory, this became less possible. We were killing the emperor's men at a rate of 3 to 1, but that was not enough. The emperor was willing to suffer the attrition to put the rebellion down; and so he was successful. It was then Jiku ordered me to take his family and hide them, and then flee over the mountains to lead the emperor's men away from them." He paused and finished his drink with a contented sigh before he continued his recitation, "I made sure they were secure in the home of his oldest ally, who was going to adopt the child as his own to spare him being slain by the emperor. I took their horses with me as I fled before the path of the emperor's hunters; they caught up to me near the high passes and I was forced to fight. I killed most of them... and wounded the rest badly enough that they weren't able to pursue me as I fled onward to the height of the passes. When I stopped to tend my wounds, I started a small fire so I would not freeze. I started to doze... and heard a loud roaring crash. Snow and ice cascaded down upon me and I knew nothing more." "I awoke... sometime much later. Some people were carving me out of the ice that had entrapped me and revived me. I passed out again and when I awoke they had tied me down and I was in what I now know was some kind of operating room. They put me back under... and I woke up in some sort of hibernation tank. I had to bust out and found myself in a long abandoned place... and half machine." Riku fell silent for a short time and then added, "I did find that there is a Dragonpedia page where my name is mentioned in a footnote as part of Jiku's rebellion, so I suppose that I made a small mark on history, despite everything. What about you, Mas... Kiryu?"[752/1284] Kiryu@orizuru

Kiryu did a masterful job of not goggling, wide eyed and slack jawed, at Riku's tale. It was almost too fantastical to be believed; an honest to Kami samurai, a man out of time, rebuilt as a cybernetic warrior, attempting to find his way in a modern world.
Kiryu could see Riku's pain and loss, writ plain as day, but internally, all he could think was That is so freaking badass.
At Riku's question, Kiryu cocked his head. He shrugged, a bit nonplussed. In comparison, his own tale was not nearly so grand.
"I don't know, man. I mean... I'm just a guy, you know? At least, that's what I like to tell myself. That's what thinking of myself as helps."
Kiryu sighed, raking a hand through his thick hair and gathering his thoughts before speaking. It had been a long time since he had really explained himself to someone that might understand.
"But I'm not. Not really. I try to be. I want to be. Then I wouldn't have all these doubts. I wouldn't wonder if I'm doing the right thing, if I have the right to hurt people that, in my view, need stopping. If my moral compass is sound, if my power gives me the right to play judge and jury. I do, at least, try not to play executioner.
I was brought up in a martial and spiritual philosophy called the Path of Joy. It teaches it's adherents that everyone is on their own journey, and the most sacred rule we should follow is to not impede anyone else's travel. And... well, people do. All the time. Bandits in the wastes. Monsters in the shadows. We train and gain strength to cease the obstruction of the Path... but we do not seek to end anyone's own journey, for at that point... they can grow no further. The Path of Joy teaches us that everyone can grow, can..."
Kiryu trailed off. A frown crossed his face. I'm still a teenager. Kiryu shook his head, trying to rid himself of the ennui that thought brought on.
"Sorry, I'll step off my soapbox. The point is... my family, my ancestors, everything I've ever learned. I feel like it was for a reason. A purpose. Then I discovered that my power was not just as a fighter, but I could do magic. Like, literal magic. It's hard, sometimes, not to feel like I'm chosen. But what the hell am I chosen for? Am I a tool? A weapon? A destroyer? A savior?
Hell if I know, man. I just try to do what seems right.
The more I've delved into the magical side of things, though, the more I believe that there is a deeper meaning to all of this. That there is a reason I have the abilities I have. There's a storm coming. That's why I held the tournament; to find people like you. To train you. To help you push me. Because as surely as I know I am standing here and I am who I am, I know that something huge, something terrible, is going to threaten not only us, but our whole world. We're going to need to be strong enough to stop it. As cliched as it sounds, I feel called, like this is what I need to do. Otherwise... all this power? What the hell is the point, unless it's to do some good in the world?"
Kiryu rolled his shoulders, then, loosening himself up. "Anyway, that's where I'm at. That's why I do what I do. Because I can, and someone needs to. Now, how about we start warming up? Fair warning; I'm not going to take it too easy on you. I'm going to press you, and I expect you to come at me hard."
Kiryu grinned over at Riku, then let his power come to the fore, silvery emerald aura surrounding him and causing the rocks on the ground to vibrate from the force of the explosion of ki from the young warrior. That beacon of power would not be missed by any ki sensitive in the area, Kiryu's power level spiking to over forty thousand as he prepared to engage his new protege.

Riku listened to Kiryu's tale, ruminating upon his words. A mighty wizard, who just wanted to be a normal man. Despite this, Kiryu had taken up the mantle of warrior and protector; an aegis to those who could not protect themselves. The more professional sort of respect he had for the man was now colored by a genuine admiration. He found that he liked this young man and was very much interested in learning what he had to teach. He did have some odd idioms though... "Soapbox?" he muttered confusedly to himself, he is not ON a box... must be some sort of saying. Hopping up to his feet, he slapped the dust from his gi and moved out a few steps from the lighthouse, trying not to be overwhelmed by the power pouring in silvery green waves from his mentor.
Riku took a deep breath and reached for his own power, releasing it and letting his own golden ki pour forth from him in waves. Though it was less than half of his master's power, in most circles it would not have been significant, creeping towards 18,000 power level. Riku bowed to Kiryu and simply said, "You are a good man, Kiryu. I will endeavor not to let you down with my words or actions, as long as we are tied together I will hold to your convictions." He grinned as he straightened, "Especially as they closely match my own in many ways. As far as coming at me full force... I wouldn't have it any other way. How else would I learn?" He began to stretch his arms and legs a bit, getting ready for the fight to come. He had a feeling he was going to need to be very limber...

Riku grabbed his sparring sheathe from the side of his pack and then drew his sword. He secured the sheathe around his blade and then swung it once, twice, then once more for thrice. Feeling no movement or give he nodded to himself, satisfied. He stepped towards his master, who was exuding power like... a light in the dark, really. Riku concentrated and a shell of preservative golden light popped into existence around him, then faded away. He then reached out to his environment and starting drawing more power into himself; he couldn't match Kiryu, but maybe he could show more of what he could do. Golden light erupted from him, dancing around his body like flames for a moment as he felt his personal power jump up beyond its normal capacity... and still being far short of Kiryu. He kept a stoic face and took the starting position for a sword stance named reaping the whirlwind... it seemed appropriate. He then nodded to Kiru, "I am ready, Kiryu." He tightened his grip on his sword slightly and wondered if that was true...{ } DEFENSE PHASE.
