“So, from what I understand… it won’t be long now, will it, Maxine? We might not have many more conversation like this.”
”The doctor said… not to predict too much. But, it seems that I’m – stable.”
“Oh, don’t look so down! I’m looking forward to it. I imagine it will be like… meeting the real Maxine, all grown up.”
”I don’t believe a machine can grow up like you say. I won’t be very different. But… I, too, look forward to it. I’ve gotten to know you well, my duchess, but I’d like to know you – properly.”
“Ufufu, you’re just as sweet as I hoped. I’ll have to make it a party or something! And, I assure you, you’ll fit in well. The Duke was talking about you just the other day, you know! You’ll be in good hands.”
”U-Um, please, I’m just a servant. I’m not exactly a member of the family…”
Though the neon lights and towering skyline of Oolong City was often complained about by foreigners and locals alike, for at least one soul – it was comforting. Perhaps it was just the tastes of a machine, compared to a living thing, but Maxine found some sanctuary in that urban abyss. Electric Town was often particularly loathed for its bright lights and nonstop advertising, yet the view from this club’s balcony was more refreshing than any garden retreat. To bask in the moonlight mixed with the city’s colours, and think of all the lives dashing through their own worlds beyond her own grasp. Insignificance… for her, that was a pleasure in-of itself.
She was not important, after all. But a mere machine. The purpose she had been made for had escaped her before she had even opened her eyes… Duchess Rhyme, her Duchess, had never truly met her. Or… not quite. From those logs UN-02 had finally revealed to her, well… it was more like Maxine, had never truly met the Duchess. She owed the lady her life, and yet would never be able to express her thanks.
She’d heard of people mourning having missed the chance to say goodbye, but… she did not often hear someone who had missed the chance to say hello.
Thankfully she didn’t have Two installed right now, or no doubt she’d be grumbling about Maxine’s priorities again. The extra AI had insisted on having her own system to enjoy the party, seeing as it was a special occasion. Which fit Maxine just fine! Having her companion blathering away right now would surely ruin the moment. For now… she’d rather have herself as company; and focus on her next move.
“Lurking all on your own at a party of your own design? How am I not surprised… come on now, Maxine. Just this once, you’re not on the job.”
The princess, of course – but for tonight, was being well-behaved. Maybe she couldn’t resist such a big party, or maybe she was just happy while she had a cocktail glass of the finest stuff in her hand. Of course, she still had to stand out, wearing a glamourous but old-school Western Lands dress; haori and layered kimono and all. And, of course, in purple in black… just like everything else the Shinobu touched.
“The old-timers won’t shut up about that deal with the casinos down South, so I don’t blame you slinking out. But, this is your evening, too.” mused the lady, as she sauntered over and joined Maxine in leaning on the balcony’s railing. The android herself hadn’t actually caught up on said news, so now she felt a bit guilty for being out of the scene… but, the princess was right. She could wait, just for tonight. “Come on back, and complete your mission – give me some company. That’s not an excuse to start trying to teach me about rap music, but I’ll take it over talking business at a nightclub.”
An order like that from the princess couldn’t be argued with, but Maxine hid a tiny smile as she joined her. The Shinobu’s dog, in her impeccable suit; and the heir, in a wondrous dress – they might as well walk back in arm-in-arm. The lights and music welcomed them back, without missing a beat.
But… the club was too busy to pay them any mind. The Shinobu bathed in wealth, so even a perfect date wasn’t going to turn in any heads. And tonight was a special occasion – not just for Maxine, but for the whole clan. An anniversary that earned three days to itself every year, where the clan’s purple-clad punks owned their turf, and every bar subtly upped its prices in preparation for the storm. As classy as this establishment was, looking more like a classical cabaret club had collided with a nightclub, it was no different. But, that suited the Shinobu just fine, so long as the performance matched the price… or, well, it looked like it did.
Maxine swiftly took stock of the situation – or, at least, the usual suspects. The towering samurai, Hatsuka, was flanked by a number of young recruits in one of the booths near the dance floor; and was clearly on her seventh or so drink already. No doubt she was revelling in the attention (and the free drinks). The older associates and the Chairman were in the sealed VIP lounge, most likely trying to talk business in spite of the party going on outside. That must’ve been the scene Princess was complaining about. Most of the businessmen were drinking hard and dancing harder, though – those pent up types were always the types to explode on an occasion like this. Ah, and there was a mix of all of the above that had slipped away into one of the quieter corners… the aura of narcotic influence was unmistakable.
So, all was in order, at least as much as a Shinobu party could offer. Maxine didn’t get far inside before being spotted by some of the late arrivals, but the first to greet her were a welcome sight. The married couple she’d helped with not long ago; the tall and peppy Yuzu, and her petite and sharp spouse Seikano. Perhaps it’d just taken time with her wife, or perhaps it was because of the special occasion, but Seikano was looking more relaxed than usual – the Shinobu higher-ups must have rubbed off on her. She’d fit in very well, as Maxine had expected. The Hoshino family she had brought with her through their engagement had proven to be an excellent addition to the Shinobu’s branches.
“Maxine-chan! I hoped we’d catch you tonight! Seikano said you might be too busy with work to attend, but I knew this would be too big for even you to sneak away from~”
“Y-Yes, well, I was wrong. It’s good to see you, though. Maybe it’s an odd sentiment to give to an android, but I’d like to think you’re not always working.”
“She does try her best, but we manage to force her to take time off now and then. Now’s not the night for business, though – it’s the night to celebrate the Shinobu, and in particular their newly anointed couple. I hear you’ve settled in excellently.”
While Maxine just greeted the pair with her usual deep bow, the princess was far faster than her tongue. And, quite a bit more graceful… as the trio began to banter, the android could not help but feel a little pleased. For all her whims and whinging, the heir was quite good at getting people talking. Or, perhaps it was just because it was such a pleasant occasion.
“Yes, the Shinobu Clan has been very hospitable for me. Though I often heard unpleasant things about your dealings, I don’t think even the Tea can hope to compare to how fast you can seal a deal or get approval for investment projects. I often hear the chairman boast of the Shinobu as fostering samurai in the stockmarket rather than in skirmishes, but now I can see that it’s not all talk.”
“Having savvy advisors is what allows us to afford that sort of speed. You’ve made yourself quite useful already, Seikano-san. Consider it just our part of the deal. The free drinks and pretty girls are just a bonus.”
“Ehehehe, I think they’re important to a few deals as well, but I feel like I shouldn’t say too much more – Maxine-chan is blushing~”
”M-My apologies…”
Sharing a bout of giggles, the trio lit up like the lights – and even Maxine herself could not hide a smile. She didn’t like all the noise, but… if only every night could be like this.
“Mm, but, let’s forget about business! Tonight’s the anniversary of the Shinobu, so what matters is the people! Everyone’s expecting some big promotions and honours tonight.” announced Yuzu, beaming albeit with red-tinted cheeks; no doubt courtesy of her empty glass. “Kyoma-kun made such a big deal about his earlier, and I was surprised that the boy from the South got a position too – it’s not often foreigners get such attention here.”
Princess nodded, while Maxine continued to let her do the talking for her. “Indeed, but it was well-deserved. Getting our hand back into the casino business after that scandal a few decades back is going to rock the clan. Though, speaking of well-deserved… there has been one promotion that has not been announced. And, I doubt it will be.” Wearing a troublesome smirk, the lady turned to Maxine – who naturally turned away, far from enjoying the attention. “I think it’s just a formality at this point, but yet she still acts like a shrinking violet. Machine or not, you’ve brought honour to the clan, and now cleared all your debts…”
”So the chairman says. But, it was just a matter of course. I don’t think it’s necessary to celebrate… it just means I shall be more involved in our work. I can’t see myself as a businessman, nor a leader, so… I’ll just keep doing my work, like always.” A weak reply, but becoming of the humble android – could a synthetic like her have an ego, in the first place? ”I shall be a loyal servant nonetheless. If you need me, please call upon me. It is always my pleasure to work for you two. And… the princess, as well.”
As the quartet naturally gravitated towards the bar for somewhere to sit, Maxine took their empty glasses on instinct; setting about preparing a new set of cocktails while they continued to chat. However, she didn’t get too far before she was gently pulled aside again, by a light knock at the end of the bar.
At first, it was an odd sight – a Tuffle, amongst all the demons. All on their lonesome, but quite content… there was no need to trade words, and instead Maxine took her time preparing familiar drink for them. A specialty from the North, rather than the West; the Sadala Spritz was a complex sour cocktail that was barely known even up there. However, to a certain crowd, its deep blue gradient and refined flavour was a rare hint of a distant past… a shared glance between Maxine and the young man said it all, yet he still opened his mouth. The android got the impression it might be the only time he spoke that whole night.
“To the future, Sixes.”
”To the future.”
She wasn’t sure if the Shinobu were hospitable, or the Dragoons were adaptable, but it was still a startling sight.
Thankfully, the married couple and the heir were quite happy to entertain themselves, though the latter was soon called away by the chairman again; while Kyoma, the wannabe prince, took her place at the bar instead. So, for now, Maxine settled into acting as an extra bartender – the returning demon who’d been working before knew from but a glance to give her room to work. She might not have a high profile like any martial artists, but the android had gradually developed a reputation. Good, and bad... but, someone who knew how to mix a drink, at the very least.
And so she settled back into work – a pleasant routine, punctuated by the tinkling of ice in a glass; as she toured the club from the bar to groups of guests with a platter of drinks in hand. Paloma, Paozu Spritz, a Sleeping Princess for the chairman, and unsurprisingly an Oni Bandolier for –
The soaring blade almost took her head off.
She tasted the steel as it passed by her, while a few locks of her lavender hair fluttered to the floor.
Her eyes narrowed, and she swept her body backward before the blade could come for head again. No one even turned around as the steel flashed, while Maxine slipped from the outskirts into the dancefloor. No time for dancing, this time around – or, rather, she was involved in a very different dance. Within such a tight space, they couldn’t use such a long sword without slicing anyone else apart… and Maxine had a very good hunch they weren’t planning on taking anyone’s life but her own.
Amongst the mix of Demons, Maxine just about vanished – the Shinobu had always tended to have such tall souls; particularly their families of Demon and Human hybrids. An android of her height would be invisible from beyond the dance floor’s flashing tiles. That’d buy her time to escape, or better yet –
Long, purple hair swayed, distinct amongst the moving bodies –
”Have you no respect, Hatsuka?”
While the slow, pounding song played, Maxine merely whispered; but the demon’s eyes still managed to fix on her.
”You wretch. Come and face me, rat.”
Her tone, too, was a fiery whisper; yet audible – was she just reading her lips and imagining it? Or was it a voice just for her? Not a single head turned their way, as the game of cat and mouse intensified.
Maxine had experience slipping between her taller comrades, and thankfully had bigger issues to focus on than any sense of embarrassment – and they, too, were predominantly too tipsy or lost in the music to pay her any mind. However, they were also wise enough to clear the way for Hatsuka; whose bad temperament and rank granted her just as much ease of movement as her prey. A snake, and a rat –
A short blade slipped by Maxine’s ear as soon as she lost focus for even a second, leaving the android dashing desperately for more cover. In spite of her size… Hatsuka was quite capable of vanishing in a place like this. The purple lights draped everything in camouflage, while Maxine’s suit was black as night; an obvious target.
She barely got a few seconds to breathe before that knife came for her again, but the next strike was much more clumsy, giving her a chance to analyse it – a wakizashi. Elegant, sharp; but too long to be convenient here. Maxine would have the advantage. Err, though… the advantage for what, exactly? She could just evade all night, and she’d really rather than start a fight in the middle of this party, but – being impaled by Hatsuka on the night of her promotion would not be good for the clan’s stability. A ‘bad look’, as they said.
”Needy, worthless, unambitious – you don’t deserve even the Shinobu’s table scraps. You’re nothing! You’re just a slave.”
”Drunkenly stumbling with a blade at the clan’s most revered occasion; you are in no place to complain. Sit back down and behave yourself.”
”You’re blindly dependent; like a dog. As soon as a hint of corruption returns to the Shinobu, you’ll be shot like an old horse. Even now, the chairman could just turn you against us all. You pledge yourself to the clan, but all you’re pledged to is running –!”
Weaving whenever the dancers began to split like a river around a rock, Maxine found the blade easier and easier to handle as Hatsuka lost her cool; focussing more on their argument than taking the android’s throat out. She couldn’t hide anymore – but neither could Maxine, as the show began to take the stage in the crowd’s place. ”I shall not let such a fool take a duchess’ place! You’re just a weapon! A gun cannot hold an office!” snarled the samurai, slashing wildly now, while Maxine continued to back away. A swift chop took some more hairs off of her again – only for the blade to get stuck in one of the floor’s railings. ”Rat! Show your steel; stand and fight already! The Shinobu need warriors, not servants! A duchess doesn’t bend like the peasants, they stand tall!”
Slipping around the lady, the android turned back to her foe as she recovered her blade; only to find any hope of cover had vanished. Though the lights continued to dance, no one else did – the floor had cleared for them. So much for hoping to cool the brat before she ruined the party… then, she’d better clean up quickly. ”Stand down, Hatsuka. You’re drunk off your face. Quit embarrassing yourself before the court.”
The lady’s hand went towards her katana’s hilt – but, Maxine would not allow it –
”Kugk…?!”
Hatsuka’s eyes went wide in surprise, hesitating – or, did it hurt that much? The sudden punch to her nose from below left her reeling, even though it shouldn’t have even made her shudder given the differences in their physique. But, her surprise was soon replaced with a smirk, and her stance lowered… and that wakizashi shone below the strobe. ”…Good. Be grateful. I’ll kill you magnificently. Better than a machine deserves!”
Certainly, Hatsuka was tipsy – but, she was far less inebriated than Maxine expected. Or, was that her rage talking? Regardless, the android was on the back foot as soon as the samurai moved again. She was a gunman, not a martial artist, so Hatsuka had every advantage here. And, unlike Maxine, she had no sense of grace. The blade came for her chest, then her eyes; before a swift instep kick for her side; forcing Maxine back. And, in the perfect spot for a table to be swung at her by the taller and stronger demon; slamming the android aside in the midst of a dodge – she just couldn’t avoid such a big weapon.
Flopping onto her back, Maxine had to scramble to get back up; while Hatsuka smirked over her. She ought to just flee to cut off this stupid fight… but, that look annoyed her. A sense of frustration that boiled over her focus. She could feel it too, couldn’t she? This was the time – to settle things. If she demanded a duchess who stood up for her clan…
… then, the correct thing to do, would be to get out of sight for now and let Hatsuka cool off, before administering proper discipline and sending a clear message to the rest of the clan.
But right now, she just wanted to beat the shit out of her.
She charged. She swung. She didn’t plan or think. Her processing came to a halt, focussing on just maximising her output of force rather than planning ahead. She pounded on Hatsuka in a pointless, childish flurry. It wasn’t a rage – she only just frowned, and didn’t speak a word, and her blows were still technically fine and well-aimed – but, that was just how she justified it to herself. Every impact just made her want to swing again. Even once the demon began to crumple with each blow, she just kept going. Yet, not a single strike made her feel better –
A crunch finally interrupted her, as Hatsuka broke the rat’s shoulder with a single hand.
Maxine could only crumble before her, falling to her knees; while the demon before her just stretched her arms – the android’s fury was just a warm-up for her. She could keep fighting, she could turn on her redundant systems, and she could easily just run away… but, something had locked the machine in place.
”You get it now? I’m just some punk, like you always say… but, even I’ve got more of a backbone than you. That’s why you don’t deserve that chair.” remarked Hatsuka, with a calm tone. Raising her hand, she showed the weapon that had crippled her rival in one stroke – a mundane tanto knife, with a black ceramic blade. An unsigned weapon, with no magic nor technology to it at all. ”This is all it takes to kill a duchess. You might be replaceable now – but in that office, you won’t be anymore. You can’t just be a servant to the clan. You have to grow up, at long last.”
Maxine could only stare.
The mission –
”You’re a machine, Maxine. Not a demon! Not even half a demon. You can’t be programmed to be a leader! You have to do it yourself. And if all you do is worship demons… then you’re not going to survive when one turns on you again.”
My mission –
Twirling the knife in her fingers, Hatsuka gave a deep frown; eyes full of pity. ”I like you, Maxine… but, I think you’ll always be better down here than up there. ‘Cause… I’m just a punk. And you are, too. We’re just punks… so, just do the work you know. The world doesn’t need another duchess. It didn’t need then, did it?”
If you cannot have faith in the mission, then, there’s nothing left.
“You’re a demon, remember? We don’t care about stuff like fate~“
Maxine raised herself to her feet, shivering. That knife – that knife – that was her worst enemy.
No sword could compare. No gun could compare. No person could compare, not anymore.
Yet, she stood, on quivering legs, and stared at it. It was just a tool, like her… s-she had to focus. She had to stand up. She had to – look past it, and look up.
She’d been given a chance. She could just work blindly, as Hatsuka said, but – her mission was something more than that.
No, Hatsuka was precisely right… if she wished to take up the office, then, she had to face that knife, and stand tall.
Hatsuka stared down at the android with cold eyes. Slowly, white blood stained her hands, and trickled down Maxine’s suit. But… the demon could only frown, regret washing over her fury.
”---Looks like I lost.”
”A-And-d I-I ----“
The LEDs in Maxine’s eyes faded, and the blade that had ended Duchess Rhyme’s life ended her in turn.
---------------------------------
An awkward silence.
It was the usual. The glass elevator, with the two Shinobu heavies.
But today, there was no banter.
Hatsuka could not look her in the eye.
”…Maxine. It’s…”
The android glanced up from her focus, looking at the demon only briefly.
”It is not important.”
”I am sure – I crossed a line. So –“
The machine just looked away.
”It’s – just part of the job.”
And so it continued.
Finally, they stepped onto the familiar black tiled floor. For once, the chairman was already there, seated; pruning a bonsai on her desk. “Hatsuka, Maxine. I am glad to see you are both better behaved than last night.” remarked the lady, with that iconic sly smirk, not bothering to look up at them; “Don’t look so dour. It’s nothing new. I would even say it was quite entertaining, personally; but do try to keep it in an alley or a dojo next time. It can leave a bad impression on the juniors.”
She cast a glance at Maxine – “After all, we are not all so easily replaced.”
The android did not respond; just giving a timid bow instead.
The chairman still didn’t look up; instead just waving her over to the seat opposite her. “The papers are all there, if you’d be so kind to sign off on them. As I forewarned, it’s not as glamourous as it could be – as you can’t be classed as even an indirect member of the lineage, it’s difficult to fit you into the Duchies’ rulings. But, I get the feeling you don’t mind being ranked as an honoured consultant a little longer. In many ways, it’s the same as before, but from here on out – you’ll have a say in the clan’s future. A place at the negotiating table, and so forth. Rather than just serving drinks… though, I get the feeling you’ll still do that no matter how many times I tell you not to.”
Maxine signed the papers without a second thought. ”It’s just another part of the job. My ranking does not matter – I am devoted to the clan.” she answered simply, all business again. She paused, however, and continued: ”---But, I would like to have a part in the clan’s ambitions. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and I have begun to recognise how important it is to have responsibilities rather than just orders. I owe that to – a lot of people.”
The Colonel, Hatsuka, Lord Koma, Juniper, Note and Gris – they had all had a role in that experience. She was just a machine, yes, but that didn’t mean she didn’t matter. If she wanted to say she fulfilled her impossible mission, then she ought to go above and beyond, surely.
The chairman gave a gentle smile rather than a smirk, pleased with the response, but not feeling any need to add to it. “There are a lot of privileges with your new rank, of course, but I do not think there is any point in me filling you in on them. Even with your debt aside, I don’t think any salary will inspire you; and I find it hard to imagine you in a VIP suite at the WMAT.” mused the lady, before glancing to their company – “Would you mind acting as witness to Maxine’s signature and my approval, Hatsuka?”
While the samurai leaned down to do her part, the chairman continued – “However, in place of such things, and in honour of your work, I have managed to prepare something a little more – personal. The Shinobu may be scheming, venomous, selfish snakes; but I’d like to think we treat our staff well. I don’t think it’s in the same price range as some of the veterans’ bonuses, yet I think it will serve that role quite well.”
Maxine didn’t raise an eyebrow – she truly didn’t care for such things. She just wanted to get back to work. And… hopefully, take Hatsuka out for a drink. She got the feeling they had a lot to talk through, for both of their sakes.
”Until Duchess Rhyme says I have completed my mission, I shall serve the Shinobu – not without question, but not without loyalty, either.”
“That’s precisely what I hoped to hear.”
---------------------------------
It was beautiful.
Like stepping back in time.
”…it’s all still here.”
She could not help but marvel at the tiny bush of violet roses, hidden amidst the moss and ferns.
It was like she had never left.
The sun shone down from above, in this tiny slice of a home she had never known. It was not a massive garden; just a little atrium, maybe ten square metres total; but it was gorgeous. And beyond it, the exquisite office. It wasn’t full of modern finery like the chairman’s – it was homely. Souvenirs dotted shelves, flowers and bonsai sat in vases, and familiar books awaited their owner.
Thirty years ago, that owner had been fated never come home again.
But, even now, those diagnostics had shown her this world. A place beyond memories – like a primordial dream. The office she had been created in, forged over years in love and attention. She felt that she ought to be haunted, unsettled, or empty; but instead she felt like she’d finally returned. Maybe she’d just finally worked through some of those traumas and doubts… or, maybe, she had just always wanted to be here.
Slowly, she approached the wooden desk, with its empty chair beckoning her. She couldn’t help but peer around it first – she hadn’t even dared to place a laptop upon it yet for fear of interrupting its mythical state. A Pilaf phrasebook still sat upon it, and a magazine from the South Lands’ casinos. A handful of old Western Land coins, the kind popular for shrine visits; and a ring of forgotten keys. A photo frame –
Maxine gently placed it facing down. She wasn’t ready for that just yet.
Slowly, timidly, she took her master’s seat. She was still scared, deep down, but a sense of calm pushed her onward. It was like, in spite of everything, there was still a hint of the duchess still here. That kindness that had brought her into the world long ago… she could still at least sense the evanescent scent of it, even if the life it was attached to had disappeared long ago. Maxine did not have any sense of spiritualism, but right now… maybe, just maybe –
A knock at the door shook Maxine from her dream.
She waited patiently. Then, she realised –
This was – her office.
”Please come in.”
Thankfully, it was not some stammering youth, but instead a familiar face – she could handle this much. Unsurprisingly, it was Hatsuka. She was drawn in by the sights, but not entranced like Maxine. No doubt she had a mission on her mind. And, the android was quite sure she knew what it was.
”Hatsuka. I will state again – you’ve no need to apologise –"
”I’m not here about that.”
Surprised to be shut down so promptly, Maxine couldn’t help but bow her head, while the demon marched up to the desk and loomed over her – it was nice to see her acting like herself again, as wretched as she could be. ”It’s your first day in this office, correct? Then, I should give you a housewarming gift.” With such a ridiculous statement, her rival began to put down a sizable brown-wrapped package, and then –
”There’s no need to overdo it. Your first gift was plenty.”
Quietly, Maxine placed the familiar item on the desk; barely restraining her hand from shaking. She quickly retreated after it was placed – but, she forced herself to stare at it. ”T-This is m-more than enough. Thank you, Hatsuka. Your timing was – i-impeccable.”
Hatsuka scowled for a moment, then relented. ”You’re terrified, rat… but, I get it. If you’re going to carry on her work, and take up her office, then… you need to work through that, too.”
”Y-Yes… it’s, i-it’s truly scary, b-but… the duchess – my duchess – if I am truly to dedicate myself to her, in this future, then I… I think I should enshrine her will. In all its forms. Her life, and her…”
The android trailed off, while Hatsuka remained silent. She left silently – both of them knew that Maxine need a lot of time alone.
The truth that she couldn’t grasp, even now, was eating away at her.
The justice that she didn’t believe in, but was forced to speak of.
The duchies that had forgotten the only person who had remembered her.
All this swirled around Maxine, each and every day.
But. Sitting here, in a world she didn’t belong in, but yet fit all too well – she could be certain that this was the path. No matter the truth, no matter her future; she had a mission to carry out. And now, she had her duchess’ support, in some way or another. Whether that was an illusion, or a fleeting dream; a hole in her programming that could not be understood –
It was paradise.
An artificial, frail paradise; but a paradise nonetheless.
The window to the future was as murky as ever, but the view of the past was beautiful –
This was her Plastic Beach.
