It was as if the heavens themselves wept for the land. A steady drizzle of rain fell from the skies. It had rained all morning since they began their journey to Oolong City. He had decided to travel by foot in order to enjoy the scenic view as well as to memorize the lay of the land. But all they had to show for it were their muddy sandals as the dirt roads turned to muck, forcing them temporarily off the main path. He held his haori up above their heads in a makeshift shelter. Note did mind the rain so much, but he wanted to protect Aria from the elements. Not that she needed his protection. Her pensive smile never left her lips as she stared off into the distance, web serving the landscape. Note watched her for a moment, wondering what was on her mind. Was she regretting this trip? He sighed, frowning deeply at the overcast skies. "Go ahead and say it." "Hmm?" He seemed to interrupt her train of thought as she turned her gentle smile on him. "Did you say something, Note-san?""Um... no, never mind."They needed to hurry and find some sort of rest stop—maybe a small inn where they could escape the weather. He had held his larger form for hours now, and he needed a break, but not in front of her. He didn't want her to see him weak and fragile. Thunder rumbled overhead. The rain picked up as the wind tugged at their robes. Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all... [266 of 266 words] LAIKA OF THQ

Sanare was heading back to central city from the wastelands of the deserts. What an adventure! She never thought she was so strong as to five bandits on her own. What was happening to her? Where was this strength coming from? What would Travis thing about it? She wasn't sure why she was worried about this. Something was bothering her at the pace her life was changing. It seemed unnatural and not earned. One thing was for sure, she was going to have a longer conversation with Master Avis than she had before this journey began. She wouldn't miss the desert heat. She hated sweating this much. She was use to working out and being sweaty for short periods of time, but this was a bit ridicules. She longed to get back to her measly apartment and get a cold shower. She wasn't sure she would ever get all the sand out of her boots. She sighed. There just wasn't an end in sight. She walked on for a few more hours; making mental notes to definitely get a car if this was going to be the new normal for her. She shuddered. She wasn't sure she wanted this to be the new normal. She snapped out of her day dream as she looked up and saw two people approaching near her.... WC: 222 SanareSUMMARY PHASE. No actions taken.

"Master Note?"He'd become so accustomed to the monotonous drone of the rain that Aria's soft, measured tone was almost jarring by comparison. His arms were beginning to ache from shielding them from the rain. His haori was soaked through and growing heavier by the minute. It was all he could do to keep his concentration. "Yeah?""What will you do when you reach the city?"He thought the question was obvious. "That's easy. I'm going to offer my services to whomever needs my help.""And then what will you do, my liege?" She looked at him with her strange, opaque eyes. He frowned, eyes on the road ahead of them. Wasn't it obvious? "I'm... not sure what you're asking me, my lady."Her smile brightened as she waved a dismissive hand. "You've no need to be so formal with me. Aria is just fine."Note studied her for a moment. Her indigo hair was pinned in a formal style by a beautiful butterfly clip. Her own haori bore the same appealing colors—like that of a twilight sky at sunset. There was a katana tucked into her obi, much like him, though hers was far thinner. Hard to believe she was stronger. The more he thought on her question, the more he pondered his own motivations. He wanted to get stronger, and as both his parents and his wards—Uncle Canon and Aunt Cadence—had taught him, only conflict brewed the sort of life experience he'd need. But after that...? He wouldn't have long to ponder it. "Master Note?" Aria stopped, causing him to almost bump into her. He was close enough to sense the heat coming from her body. She raised a hand, pointing at the figure heading down the road toward them. "Such a strange woman. I can't sense her ki."He stopped in his tracks, thrusting a protective arm in front of Aria. His eyes narrowed in suspicion as he peered at the approaching stranger. She had blonde hair and was clad in white, but the most intriguing thing about her was the fact she didn't seem to care about the rain. She didn't strike him as dangerous, but in these parts one could not exercise too little caution. "Let me handle this, Aria. You stay back."Aria pressed a delicate hand to her mouth, stifling a small giggle. "As you wish, my liege."Her hand went to the hilt of her katana. Note lowered his haori, passing it off to Aria as a shield against the rain. He took a cautious step toward the stranger, raising a hand in greeting. Dressed in his formal black uniform, he looked every bit the duchess's son. "Uh... h-hello?" He hated the way his voice wavered. He wanted to sound confident. Like Echo. "I mean, greetings, friend. My name is Note, and I hail from Truffle Village. This is my bodygua— erm, travel companion, Aria." He gestured at Aria, who dipped her head in a formal bow. "Mind telling us why you're traveling alone without something to protect you from the rain?"[511 of 777] words Initiative Roll - tksOQ98d1d100 LAIKA OF THQ

Sanare confusion over the question must have shown on her face. She certainly felt it on her face. She then realized it was rain she felt, and not just on her face! She was soaking wet, her light orange orange hair dripping with water. Her cloths were wet, drenched with water as well. How long had she been walking around in such a daze? How was it she hadn't noticed the rain? Yet a more disturbing question rose up inside of her, but didn't quite take form. Something about the environment's effect on her. She lost the thought before she could really take hold of it. She turned her attention to the two strangers standing in front of her. She could sense their energy and felt a familiar ki. Maybe these two weren't bandits. Maybe she didn't have to hurt them. "Hello," She finally said. Then she remembered the guy had asked a question and she giggled. "I-I really don't know why I'm out here in the rain! Well, truth be told I didn't have an umbrella, and I guess I was doomed from the start to get rained on." She smiled and hope she was radiating a calm vibe for them. Well maybe a calm but confident vibe. She really didn't want to have to hurt them. "I'm traveling to Central City. What about you?"SanareSUMMARY PHASE. Initiative Roll 6Zlz1_bF1d100

The strange woman was surprised at his mention of rain. A light of recognition shone in her eyes as she turned her gaze skyward, noting their drenched landscape. He furrowed his brow, briefly glancing at Aria. How had she not noticed the rain? It was downpouring, and though he'd only been out of the shelter of his haori for a few minutes, he was soaked all the way through by now. It was unpleasant to have a random encounter in these conditions, but it was his duty. He wanted to impress Aria. He didn't want to be viewed as incompetent. The woman smiled at him. It was gentle and unassuming, perhaps even inviting. Her smile, however, did not seem to reach her eyes: they remained flat and unreadable. Note took an involuntary step backward. He slipped a trembling hand around the hilt of his katana. Why was he so nervous? She'd done nothing to warrant any apprehension on his part. Something about this woman seemed... off, yet he lacked the experience to determine just what it was. What should he do? He glanced back at Aria. She held up his haori with one hand, the other on her sword hilt. She exuded calm and clarity, unperturbed by the stranger. A gentle smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she regarded the white garbed woman with an almost regal air. He was the son of a duchess and heir to a village, yet Aria possessed more class than he did. Note closed his eyes, inhaling a deep breath. He could hear his parents' words of wisdom come flooding back to him. Stay calm and alert.
Look for a weakness and exploit it.
Remember your place. You are of noble lineage. Take pride in it.
Give 'em a good kick in the ass. He needed to be decisive. He needed to show strength. "I..." He swallowed the nervous lump in his throat. His grip on his sword hilt grew firm. His fingers stopped shaking. "Forgive me, but this is a dangerous area. There are all sorts of bandits and demons that frequent these parts. I... I don't believe you're headed for Central City." He nodded his head in the direction she'd come from. "You're headed the wrong way. We're really far from your intended destination."His feet slid in the mud as he dug in, prepared to stand his ground. "Either you're lost... or you're trying to trick us."There was a flutter behind him—like the sound of a hundred butterflies taking off in flight at once. Something damp and heavy fell over him: it was his haori, settling onto his shoulders with ease. A form appeared at his side. Aria stood there, smiling as usual, but it was clear she was preparing to engage in the coming fight. "Astute observation, Note-san. I hate to admit it, but I do not believe her story, either." "R-Right." Both turned to face the woman, wondering what course of action she would take now that her ruse had been discovered. [508 of 1,285] words SUMMARY PHASE.

Sanare wondered for a moment at this guy's words. Was she lost? It was entirely possible. She lost her map back at the church duel with Vinix. She would beside herself if she was headed in the wrong direction! She had accepted her assignment with grace, and even gone the extra mile to get to the church and back. She was ready to be home! Before she could response she noticed the boy preparing for combat. She acted instantly! She would normally not be so aggressive, but her brush with the bandits made meeting these two out in the middle of nowhere feel eerie; apparently putting her on edge. She felt the power flow through her as her aura burned green around her. She rushed towards the guy, ignoring the girl for the moment. She had managed to put the bandits down with a single punch, but something about this guy said that wasn't going to happen here to him. So she threw two punches, just to test the waters! "Just confess." He muttered under his breath, low enough that he hoped it would be drowned out by the sound of the rain. He didn't want to fight her. That wasn't what this journey was about. Note wasn't his father—he did not relish conflict. If the woman just admitted the truth, he was willing to forgive her and let her go about her way. Wasn't that was rulers did? Was it possible to show mercy? Or was his cowardice dictating his actions? "Note-san?" Aria's soft tone pierced his troubled reverie. "Calm yourself. Focus. She will attack us any moment." Her poise, despite the rumbling thunder and rain soaking her through, remained certain and dignified. He nodded, frowning at the muddy ground beneath his feet. It was embarrassing. He thought he'd impress Aria and the rest of his family with his bravery. That was why he wanted to go to Oolong City in the first place, despite the fact that the idea made him nervous and jittery. How could he hope to help anyone there if he couldn't face down a simple bandit out on the road? He was so distracted with his thoughts, it wasn't until Aria sidestepped the charging woman that Note realized they were under assault. Her green aura flared with intensity as she charged toward them. His eyes widened, fingers fumbling to draw his blade. It was far too late—the attacking woman was closing in. She ignored Aria altogether, rushing straight for him. She leveled a pair of quick, piston-like punches at him, all the while maintaining that serene expression. Note ducked, slipping out of the path of her assault. He nearly lost his footing in the slippery mud, but managed to create some distance between them. Steel rasped as he freed his blade, preparing for his counterattack. "Aria, stay back!" He wanted to handle this on his own. He narrowed his eyes and focused on the woman. She left few openings, and seemed a rather competent fighter though he had the feeling she was just toying with him. Echo did the same thing. Did everyone think he was a joke? He'd prove them otherwise. Note rushed at the woman, blade flashing at his side. He spun and flung his haori around so that the wet end snapped at her in a whip-like motion, hoping to slow her down. He switched to a reverse, one-handed grip on his blade and drove the sword's hilt at the woman's midsection. He didn't want to hurt her—he just needed to create some space and formulate a proper strategy. [431 of 1,716] words SUMMARY PHASE.

Sanare was amazed that both her punches managed to miss. Who was this guy? He certainly was fast. She had thought her attacks would catch him off guard, and was actually caught off guard herself by his quick reactions. Before she could press the attack, his haori was whipped into her. It didn't cause any pain to her, but it did momentarily throw off her concentration. She just manage to see the hilt of his sword coming towards her and managed to spin to the side. She kept him on her center line as she backed away. This guy was tough. Instantly her mind registered this fighter wasn't like the bandits she fought earlier. This wasn't a normal fighter. She wasn't completely sure what was going on with her over the past few weeks, but she was starting to understand regular people couldn't handle her fighting capabilities. Someone who could meant they could fight on a level much higher than normal individuals. That meant this guy might know how to utilize his ki to attack her. The thought steadied her. This, of course, would mean she didn't have to hold back either. She didn't really want to raise the stakes, but he did have a weapon out. A passing thought about him not using the blade cross her mind, but something pushed it aside and steeled her resolve. She wasn't sure how, but she felt more focused, more honed in on where he was. It was as if the world faded away and it was just the two of them. "Sorry guy, but I'm not gonna hold back if you got a weapon out," she said as she raised her hand and fired off two energy blasts! Her eyes were keener than he'd accounted for. She ducked his haori with ease, allowing it to fall in a soaked heap to the ground. He winced as it sank into the mud due to the extra weight from the rainwater, half submerged into a large puddle. It was no way to honor his family and lineage—an outright disgrace. The woman dodged to the side, twirling out of the way of his attempted strike with the butt of his sword. She created some distance between them, never letting her eyes leave his own. They held a sharp perception to them as if she were sizing him up. Her ability was impressive. Could a common thug from the Western Lands fight like this? It didn't seem possible: they often attacked helpless victims in large numbers to account for their lack of martial prowess. Could he have gotten the situation wrong? "Note-san!" Aria's cry of alarm snapped him out of his thoughts. The woman shouted at him, stating she wouldn't hold back if he were going to wield a weapon against her. A bandit would have drawn their own weapon. This entire ordeal was turning into a big misunderstanding. "W-Wait! Hold on!" His attempt to halt the battle was lost on deaf ears. Thunder and rain drowned out his voice as she attacked him again: a pair of ki blasts came hurtling towards him. They were too fast to dodge. He slammed his katana back into its sheath, gripping it with both hands as he held it up as a shield before him. The large blast threw him backwards. He landed hard on his backside in the mud, wincing as he shook his stinging palms. "O-Ow." His sword's reinforced scabbard took the brunt of the attack; the pristinely lacquered surface was now marred with scorched burns. "Note-san?" Aria rushed towards him. "Are you alright?" She looked horrified, seeing him on the ground like that. It took him seconds to realize why—his tiny hand clutched a sword nearly his own height in length. He'd been forced back into his true form of a young child. No wonder he felt like bawling his eyes out. "I-I'm fine." His voice took on the squeaky quality of youth. "L-L-Leave me a-alone!" Aria stopped just short of him. Her mouth twisted into a wry expression. Her opaque eyes were filled with concern. She was looking at him as if he were merely a child. How annoying. His royal blue aura swirled around him as Note climbed back to his feet, resuming his mature form in seconds. There was a glint of anger in his eyes as he regarded his foe, standing a ways apart from him. He left his katana in its sheath, though gripped it with both hands as he squared up against her. "This is all a big misunderstanding. I was trying to stop this fight, yet you still attacked me. For that—I can't forgive you!" He charged forward, leaping into the air. He somersaulted forward, extending his foot at the last moment and using the momentum of his flip to drive a kick toward the crown of her head. Mud squelched beneath his sandals as he landed in front of her, seeking to drill a stiff palm strike upwards at her chin. A down and upward assault—if it landed, it was bound to disorient her. Sanare had fired two energy attacks at her foe, knocking him to the ground. She watched him as he hit the ground, but truth be told she wasn't really paying attention to him. She hadn't fired of energy attacks in a long time, and she wondered at it because it didn't leave her out of breath like normal. In fact, she didn't really feel any drain on her whatsoever. Had she really grown this strong, or was something else going on? For a second she thought he looked like a child, but when he stood back up she realized it must be a trick of the storm, or something. He came at her hard. He was aiming right for her head. She put her arms up to guard against the attack. She was successful but it still knocked her back. His next attack came towards her chin and slammed her backwards a bit. She recovered quickly but she realized she was going to have to work on her dodging. She got back into a ready stance and wondered that after taking a kick and and a palm, how she wasn't in more pain? She felt it, but this guy wasn't holding back, these attacks should have shattered her, but they didn't. What was going on with her? Was this linked to what Master Avis called "Power Level" or was something else at play here? She wanted to keep him guessing with what she was doing so she quickly threw and energy attack towards him. As soon as the energy left her hand she started moving towards him to throw a punch at his face/ WC: 274/1,179 SanareBattle Stats

He hadn't held back. His blows landed with precision but the woman weathered his assault. The fact she remained on her feet confirmed his suspicions—this was no ordinary fighter. She fired off another energy blast. It shouldn't have missed at this distance but the blast flew wild, exploding against a tree behind him and sending a shower of smoldering debris into the soggy air. Her punch landed, drilling him hard in the jaw. His sandals slid backward in the mud, fighting to keep him upright. His jaw ached from her blow—it had almost knocked him senseless. Only months of intense training redeemed him. "Note-san!""Stay back!" His shoulders rose and fell with a steadying breath. "I'm fine. She's stronger than she looks." He drew his blade once more. It all added up: tanking his hits, no ki signature. If she wasn't human, he had no qualms using his sword against her. His sandals squelched in the mud as he rushed her, blade flashing like lightning in the downpour. He leaped and spun mid-air, his blade lashing through the air as he spun like a hurricane, slashing away. [189] words [2,470] word total SUMMARY PHASE.

The sword was back and he was coming at her fast. Just what was going on here, Sanare thought to herself. She wasn't sure this guy wanted her dead, but he kept coming at her like he did. She knew herself. She had already proven she wouldn't kill anyone. She was sure there was parameters in which she would kill someone, though she couldn't think of it off the top of her head. It was probably a subject worth talking to Master Avis about. The blade came at her and she gracefully stepped to the side. The next attack wasn't as easy to dodge. In fact she didn't dodge it. The blade sliced into her arm. She felt the pain and was grateful she didn't lose her arm! She had to keep on her feet, despite the pain. She breathed in deep and let herself experience the pain. She could handle it. She had to handle it. Alright, I'm gonna light this guy up like a firework, she thought to herself. She hope he didn't die from this, but he had managed so far. With any luck this will make him hesitate to attack her again. She focused her energy into the palm of her hand and took careful aim at him. She unleashed a torrent of energy blast on him! When she was done she dropped into a defensive stance, waiting to see what would appear when the smoke cleared. WC: 241/1,420 SanareBattle Stats

Sound. It was a pinnacle element in the tempo of battle. The rumbling thunder, the steady drone of rain—all that was missing was the flash of lightning, and his blade was more than capable of providing the ingredient that would fulfill the whole of nature's fury. As an heir to the Bossa Nova clan, his eyes and ears were particularly tuned to the nuances of sound. High notes, low tones, and every resonance in between. He did not merely slash his blade wildly at his foe, as one with untrained eye might suspect. His footwork were the notes. His fluid movements—tone. His blade the melody that tied the harmonic piece together. He did not expect her to weather the assault of his blade. His blade slashed in fluid arcs all around his foe. He had no intent to kill—only to drive the woman back and away. This contest made less sense with each passing second. He knew it was foolish to fight, but he felt if he backed down now, it would only prove that he was weak. Note could not be weak; he had to demonstrate strength. For Aria. The woman sidestepped his rush, though his blade sliced her arm. There wasn't a single drop of blood, but she retreated from him nonetheless. A smirk touched his lips. A sense of victory swelled within him. The woman was, by far, his equal but Note got the sense neither of them were fighting to the full extent of their abilities. She had tried no dirty tactics; she was possessed of some honor. Maybe he would try to reach her again. She raised a hand, gathering energy into her palm before unleashing an energy wave at him. Note leveled his blade in front of him, tucking his head and shoulders. The ground was far too muddy for adequate dodging. He'd have to hunker down and take it. The attack slammed into him, knocking him backwards. The smell of burned cloth reached his nose—the resulting blast had singed holes into his garment. There were a few burns on his hands and face as well, prompting his demon healing factor to kick in. Fighting at a distance put him at a disadvantage. He had to get in close if he planned to do anything worthwhile. He drew his sheath from his belt and threw it at the woman, creating a diversion as Note charged at her again. He leaped high, blade arcing overhead yet at the last moment, he altered his trajectory and landed on the ground in front of her. Instead of his blade, he brought the heel of his foot crashing down toward the toes of her right foot. It was a childish attack, but Note hoped she wouldn't see it coming. If it worked, maybe it would slow her down a bit. It wasn't honorable, but it worked against Echo every time. [486] words [2,956] word total SUMMARY PHASE.

Sanare wasn't sure how this battle was going. He seemed relentless, as if everything she threw at him didn't do anything to him. Would she ever be able to bring him to a point of not wanting to fight anymore? She breathed in to steady herself. She couldn't give up, she had to keep going. If she quite now, there was no hope for victory. The sheath of the attacker's sword came flying at him, and she didn't have much time to react. She allowed her ki to flow through her body, enhancing her speed in order to avoid the attack. It worked, she was certainly out of the way, but she didn't see that he somehow kept up with her movements and crashed his foot into her toe. For a split second all she could see was pain. She felt the pain and knew that if she didn't act now, it would hamper her ability to fight. However, pain was her specialty. At least, removing it was. She was well trained in using her ki to restore wounds. She focused her ki for a moment and restored her body and mental state. She breathed in and stared at the guy. What was she going to do, just keep firing off attacks at him? She raised her hands, but decided she would try just going in for the strikes; rushing at him to deliver to punches aimed at his face. wc: 240/1,660 SanareBattle Stats
