I’m doing this for the money.
I’m doing this for the money.
Duran repeated this mantra in his head as he dragged a zipper up to his neck before placing a blue, teddy bear skull over his head. He headed for the bathroom exit, his feet paws squeaking like clown shoes. Thrusting his hand at the swinging door, a cotton candy-blue bear with a pacifier in his mouth and rosy pink cheeks emerged in Pilafland. The park was crowded. Parents and their little princes and princesses walked the streets like a mob.
“Look Mommy!” a girl exclaimed, pointing at him already.
Duran sighed as the child raced over to him in her pink, doll baby shoes and gown. A plastic tiara was situated on her head. In that moment, a strange feeling warmed his heart. It had been nostalgia as he was suddenly reminded of his daughter Taya who was nothing like this child. She was ten times better!
The blue bear took a knee and held out his arms. The girl immediately dove into them and Duran embraced her, while recalling the feeling of hugging his daughter. He put on a silly voice that would sound like a Boston accent: “Hey little gurl, what are you all dressed up fo'? Is it a special occasion?”
“It’s my birthday!” she proudly exclaimed.
“Happy Birthday! You have a fun time at the pawk, okay?”
“I will!”
Duran stood and noticed the father creeping over to his side. When he was shoulder-to-shoulder with him, he whispered to Duran, “Hey uh, where’s my daughter’s birthday dance?”
Duran’s head snapped hard in the father’s direction as he whispered back, “What?!”
“Every mascot is supposed to do a cute birthday dance for the birthday kid. So where is it? Look, she’s waiting.”
Duran looked at the little girl who was standing in front of her mother with her arms crossed before her chest. She had the most expectant look on her face. That spoiled little shite… Duran thought.
I’m doing this for the money…I’m doing this for the money.
His face was red, and he felt so angry and embarrassed. He glanced about at his surroundings, reminding himself that he was in a suit. It wasn’t like anyone knew who he was. Bouncing a little to the silly park music, the blue bear started to hop, kicking his left leg out and bringing it back in before his right leg did the same jig. The little girl’s face immediately lit up with joy as she clapped her hands at his dance. Suddenly, other mascots saw the blue bear dancing and joined in the dance behind him, creating some dance troupe.
Duran glanced over his shoulder in shock to see other mascots dancing. Did they think he really meant to do this? Or wait…they were probably hired just like him. Is…is this my competition? he mused. Were they trying to out perform him to steal his zeni? He suddenly imagined the park manager at the end of the day, paying him not even half and telling him how he felt he didn’t try hard enough. The Tuffle growled, Thieving bastards!
When the Happy Dance was over, all the mascots threw up their arms in a silent cheer. The spoiled brat's father was content and told Duran, thank you like he cared whether he was thanked or not. That had been the most embarrassing thing he had ever done in his life. The blue bear turned to eye his adversaries. They were all still cheering and celebrating as though that had been the best thing that could have ever happened to them, while Duran was plotting how he was going to destroy his competition.
