“Maybe I’m foolish, maybe I’m blind
Thinking I can see through this and see what’s behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I’m lying”
The woods were rather on the silent side today. When winter approached, the loud noises of insects and other such wildlife seemed to die down. It meant less food, but the silence was also peaceful. Besides, bugs weren’t nearly as tasty as other, bigger prey.
But one sounds cut through the silence. The sound of… music? Indeed, it took a keen ear for a person to be able to tell what that sound was, but music was playing from somewhere within the woods.
“But I’m only human after all
I’m only human after all
Don’t put your blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me”
A cabin, just a kilometre away from a well-travelled trail. It was abandoned, almost decrepit, but it was still liveable and it was where the music was coming from. The superstitious might think it was haunted. After all, music didn’t play from an abandoned cabin without a reason. Of course, there was a reason. There’s a reason for everything, after all.
But there wasn’t a ghost playing a strangely modern song in an abandoned cabin. No, in there sat the shore sea monster, a vicious being bent on the destruction of the universe.
At least, that’s what the newspaper read.
Anshen, the supposed “shore sea monster”, rolled her eyes as she read what looked like the tabloid section of the newspaper. It detailed sightings of a blue monster, with glowing horns and a tail that could crack a country in half with a single swipe. Of course, she wasn’t capable of this. Whoever wrote this farce of an article had somehow got the word of one of the experts in mythology in the Western Lands, which detailed all of what she could and would supposedly do. While it was oddly flattering that they thought she was powerful enough to devour the universe and end existence, she really wasn’t. The only thing she actively sought to devour was some delicious veal. Okay, maybe eating it raw gave her a bit of a bad look, but it wasn’t her fault it was so tasty! That, and her teeth were a lot better suited to eating such meats than a human’s might be.
Of course, most wouldn’t understand this, so she had to hide out here and let people forget about her. People tended to have short memories and even shorter attention spans. Most would write off the article as tabloid nonsense, religious ravings, or something else entirely. Regardless, it probably wouldn’t much matter in a weeks’ time.
“Take a look in the mirror and what do you see?
Do you see it clearer, or are you deceived
In what you believe?”
The tiny little music player was a good way to pass time and soothe her nerves while she was out here. Her only companion, really. She did feel a pang of regret for stealing it from that hiker, but it wasn’t her fault she dropped it while running away screaming for his life. Returning it would be impractical and it would likely get stolen or destroyed anyway. Why not use it?
At least, that’s what she told herself.
She leaned back on the not broken chair, closing her eyes and bobbing her head to the music almost imperceptibly. In a way much unlike her, she wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings.
