Mushrooms were disgusting. Easily one of Ori's least favorite things to eat.
Growing up in the regal, palatial residence that was the Shen ancestral home, mushroom noodles were a staple base for many of their stylized dishes. Ori always refused to eat them, and was often beaten and sent to bed hungry as a result. The last thing he wanted was to go snooping around in a mushroom forest.
But he wouldn't get the fight he wanted otherwise.
A part of him had to wonder if Cayle and Ty were just pulling his leg. It had been more than a day since they pulled those carrots, and still, neither of them had acquiesed to his request for a fight. Both of them were quite a deal stronger, so it was more a suicide mission than anything else. That didn't stop him from pursuing such a fight.
What else did he have to live for? It seemed pissing people off was the only way he got any notable attention. Perhaps that rebellious child in him still had yet to give way to the maturity of age.
"So, what the hell is a mutant mushroom anyway?" Ori floated along beside his companions. He drew a carrot from his pocket and munched on it. "Some sorta freak plant? I draw the line at fighting plants."

After the fulfillment of finding carrots with ki signatures, Pilaf Corporation reached out to prevent an infestation from spreading in a mushroom forest, and Ori had been selected to team up with the saiyan couple to find an infected mushroom.
“Cayle, remember that delicious mushroom risotto from the Shu-ri-ken Hotel restaurant? Maybe they use the mushrooms for it from this forest, so we have to save the mushrooms, and find this bad one.”The orange hair teen grinned, almost drooling, as mainland plants were delectable.
“Orizuru, do you like mushrooms?” Ty asked, “I wouldn’t want to fight one either, unless I absolutely have to, since they are pretty good cooked in butter.”
After musing for a minute Tiger Lily walked up further ahead, looking at all the mushrooms that lacked a ki signature, and kept looking. All life had ki but only a few were able to expel an exuberant amount to be detectable for miles in a forest. Fortunately, Pilaf Land’s perimeter was the same as the main island of South City, with the theme park taking up most of the territory, they would be able to reach the border soon on foot.
“Say, why aren’t we splitting up, and flying around? We can find it faster that way.”

Cayle Pota had not only successfully spied on the Pilaf Corporation and found the truth of the matter on their carrots, or some truth into it – but had also somehow weaseled his way into the good graces of the corporation when it came to working for them on other projects. Part of him wanted to be suspicious about the invitation, but Tiger Lily's enthusiasm was infectious and honestly he enjoyed nearly every mushroom dish he had since awakening on Earth. He'd hate to see a major contributor to the mushrooms of the world being infected. Not to mention, if what he had seen and what had been shown in the Pilaf Cartoons and the Kakarot comics was true, there was a higher than medium chance that the strange jobs they had been putting requests in were not some long running plan but instead because of Pilaf corporation having their pinkies in so many pies that they were messing up a few.
To Tiger Lily's strangely aggressive friend, Cayle simply shrugged when the question was asked. Why take the job if you weren't interested in dealing with it? If you said you were going to deliver newspapers, go deliver all nine thousand plus of them before breakfast time and count your zeni stack over a much larger stack of pancakes? What could beat that? Earthlings had things too easy, he began to think. Or at least some of them did. Because while some were humble and earnest about their attempts to get stronger, others were cocky shits like Kite, Luther, and Orizuru seemed to be.
“Refusing to fight something you haven't seen before is just blocking yourself from greater martial knowledge and greater skill in the martial arts. Are you refusing it because you are scared of mutant creatures and plants?” fighting such a creature could potentially give one experience and knowledge that no other person had, so it didn't make sense to refuse it.
To Tiger Lily's comments, Cayle nodded though, mushrooms did taste worse when tenderized. He'd hate to destroy a sizable portion of the crop, so was cautious and shook his head. “We should stay together, or at least stay together and on foot. We've got no idea how these mushrooms they're so worried about have gotten such high spiritual energy pressure, but if it's from the air around them, where mushrooms get a lot of their nutrients, then flying would actually make them stronger if we ended up having to fight them.”
He reached out with his sixth sense, the ability to feel the spiritual energy around him, and attempted to detect anomalies.

Trembling fingers clutched tightly to his staff as he turned to his left, and then to his right. A dense forest surrounded him on all sides, filled with the sights and sounds of nature. Frogs croaked, leaping through thick undergrowth. Pale sunlight struggled to break through the dense canopy of twisted branches and vines overhead. Mushrooms, large and small, loomed like sentinels all around him. Not even the heady scent of fresh earth could stir the naturalist's heart that beat within his chest.
He was utterly, unequivocally lost. "Oh, dear..." The weight of the Great Turtle Shell caused his sandals to sink even deeper into the surrounding murk. Beads of sweat dotted his brow and the slender nape of his neck. Exhaustion seeped into his weary bones, shoulders sagging from the stress of his long journey. His return trip from the East Lands with his prized possession had been joyous, but peace gave way to ceaseless worry. How would he find his way out of this mess? He couldn't wait around for rescue. He'd have to find his own way out of this confusing forest. He thought to rouse Glacia for aid. Her senses were keener than any wild animal's; she could find their way out, but she was snoring soundly within the shell on his back. He would have to discern his own path. He started walking.
A half hour later, Korr passed the same strange mushroom stalk for a third time and collapsed to his knees. It was hopeless.
Voices. Korr lifted his head and spied a trio of strangers approaching. They seemed to be in heavy discourse, something about the forest itself. Korr rose to his feet with renewed vigor. He stepped into their line of sight, waving his hand to grab their attention. "U-Uh, hello? Can you please help me?" One of the trio, the white haired youth, turned and flew away without warning. Korr frowned. Was it something he said? He hoped the other two would help him. "You see, I'm not from around here... I seem to have gotten myself turned around. It's quite embarrassing really..." He close his eyes and sighed, relieved that he'd finally found another person. They seemed friendly, though the black haired one seemed more surly than the girl. "Would you mind if I traveled with you, at least until we've left the forest? I would be eternally grateful." He allowed the turtle shell to slide from his back. It hit the ground with a heavy thud, revealing his bundled up cloak and sleeping pet inside. Korr rolled his narrow shoulders, his mane of white hair flowing freely. His sleeveless black shirt was drenched in sweat, clinging to his slender frame.
He took a step forward, a smile gracing his lips. "I am Korr. I hail from the Northern Lands. As you might have guessed, such conditions are unfamiliar to me. I was... ill-prepared for this journey." A hint of blush graced his cheeks as he averted his gaze, unable to meet their eyes. "I was traveling from the Eastern Lands. I thought heading north-west would get me to my destination but... well... it seems I was wrong." The next time a peddler sought to sell him a map, he would make sure to take it. "Might I ask your names?"

“Alright.” Ty responded to Cayle, she puffed her cheek slightly, she was always full of ideas, but her boyfriend treated everything like an effective war strategy. The icy blue eyed saiyan was calculative, serious about every decision made, and the only time he loosened up was whenever it was time to pick food. For a long time the teenage girl had been attempting to level with Cayle, he was still a teenager, but his life struggles kept him on edge. The world was a dangerous place but Ty was fearless, every day she became stronger, and it fed her ego a bit despite never admitting it.
In the distance someone called for help, Orizuru deadpanned in response, flying away without saying a word, and Ty wondered if he decided to do the task on hand alone. Rather than follow after Orizuru, Tiger Lily decided to do the next right thing, and help the man wearing a turtle shell on his knees.
“What's wrong?” Ty rushed over, she listened to what Korr had to say about being lost, and that he was not dressed to withstand the humid mushroom forest. “Well, we have plenty of provisions if you need it, so what would you like?”
The orange haired teen, searched in her messenger bag for a bottle of water, and trail mixture of assorted nuts and chocolate chips handing them over for the traveler to take. If this was all that he needed, they would be able to continue looking for the infected mushroom, but she figured Cayle would be able to heal his wounds if he had any.
“My name is Tiger Lily and this is my boyfriend Cayle Pota. There was a third by the name Orizuru with us but he left...maybe he will call my c-phone. Anyway, we were hired by Pilaf Corporation to search this forest for an infected mushroom that is plaguing their harvest.” Ty reflected on everything Korr had said, “You're actually quite far from the northern lands, sometimes charting the stars is more reliable than following a map or gps since both are so unreliable. You're presently in Pilaf Land, it is south of the southern demon lands and north of the southern islands. At this rate you might have ended up in the coast. Where are you trying to go?”
Ocean teal irises wandered over to the sleeping bundle inside the turtle shell that served as a cradle. “What is that? I have never seen anything like it before.”

At the sight of that turtle shell backpack and the animal that was dropped without waking, Cayle had a moment of what one might call 'almost recognition', but could not fully determine who this man was or what he might be, aside from the owner of a pet who obviously had no qualms about being jostled around. The fact that it was still breathing made it seem like a pet rather than the white haired man's next meal.
“We can help you out of the forest and then guide you to someone who can sell you a map and help explain where you're at, but you must have made a lot of wrong turns and been walking for months, sir. Because this is the northeastern forest outside of Pilaf-Land the theme park, proper.” He cracked his knuckles and went back to searching the forest for the supposedly abnormally sized mushrooms with immense spiritual power, but as he began to walk he said, “But first we've got to find these mushrooms before they ruin the mushroom harvest and make Ty not be able to order Mushroom Rissoto from Hotel Shu-Ri-Ken.”
With that said, the icy blue eyed, medium length dark brown haired Saiyan went back to work hunting for mushrooms.

Bless their kind souls. It seemed the pair of travelers were willing to allow Korr to join them, and even offered to be an escort out of the confusing mushroom forest. There was a caveat, however: they appeared to be searching for something, and he would have little choice but to join them. It seemed he was far from his desired destination. Korr's eyes widened as he stumbled back a step, leaning heavily upon his staff for support. "H-Has it really been months?" He couldn't remember. Time did not flow for him as it did for others. That is to say, he barely noted its passage—a decade could slip by before he even realized it. "Oh... dear... oh dear..." He fanned his face, cheeks turning a crimson shade. "I've never been so embarrassed! Please pardon my intrusion. I promise to be of the utmost assistance in your quest." What other choice did he have?
The turtle shell weighed heavily on his shoulders as he donned his prize once more. Thus far it served his purpose: its great bulk and weight was a reminder of his own arduous quest to seek a worthy champion to bear the sword. Could it be one of these two? "Her name is Glacia," he said, answering Tiger Lily's earlier inquiry. "I'm sure she'd be delighted to meet you, but she isn't suited to this climate. Once fatigue sets in, she hibernates to recover her strength. I'm afraid it will be some time before you can become acquainted. Nevertheless..." He let out a sigh, squaring his slender shoulders. "I promised to aide you in your task, and that's what I will do." His stomach let out a deep grumble. His mouth and throat felt parched. He couldn't remember the last time he'd drank any water. He graciously partook of the food and water which were given to him, taking care to eat very little and save the bulk for Glacia.
He did not need much to sustain himself. He was not like mortal men.

Tiger Lily blinked a few times, Korr sounded delirious, she was wondering if anything was wrong apart from being lost. Since the man did not declare he was injured, she figured nothing else was wrong, and she started walking up behind Cayle.
“Glacia is very cute. I am looking forward to meeting her properly when she recovers.” Ty looked around for any significant ki signatures, “Is your destination a secret, Korr?”
The hermit did not answer her question the first time she asked, he seemed rather disoriented, and was more concerned with remaining as part of the group after being lost for so long. The further into the mushroom forest they traveled into, the humidity in the air increased, and soon enough the visibility decreased from overcast clouds. Eventually they reached an impasse, the mushrooms were growing too closely at the stalks, the caps were forced to grow pressed together, and the teenage girl took flight to look over the natural wall.
“Uh, the overcast clouds...are not natural...it’s the mushroom we are looking for.”
In the distance was a hollow mushroom releasing a cloud of spores, there were benefits in creating moisture from the spores by blocking out the sun, but the roots were blackening the earth around it forcing the uninfected mushrooms to avoid the soil radius surrounding it. Nature had a mysterious way of surviving life. Tiger Lily returned to grab Korr by the turtle shell, giving him a boost to stand on top of the mushroom wall to see the infected mushroom for himself, since he offered to help she figured he would allow her to essentially impose on his personal space.
The redhead looked at the roots on the blackened soil, they were hard as rocks after giving it one strong kick, plucking it out would be out of the question.
“Do you guys have any ideas on how we can uproot this infected mushroom?”

“Unless you walk faster than a bullet train or than a supersonic jet flies, then yeah there’s no way that it couldn’t have been anything less than months. For some such a trip would take a whole a year, if I’ve read the average overland speed of people correctly.” Cayle said, almost nonchalantly as if it was an obvious fact, before blinking and wondering at the mere idea of what was said next. Embarrassed? For being lost? That seemed silly, plenty of people could get lost, especially if they started walking without having a proper destination planned out first.
The Saiyan suspected there was something off about this strange man with a turtle shell upon his back, but didn’t bother to voice that concern as they moved through the shadows of the mushroom trees and mushroom saplings.
He was silent as they walked, listening to Tiger Lily as she spoke, but not saying a thing until they reached the shadow of the mushroom. When it was in view, and Ty asked what she did, he was silent for about thirty seconds as he thought. The idea of simply blowing it away with energy blasts didn’t seem right, because it could spread its spores and its mutation far and wide.
“We can’t just use energy blasts on it, because that might just spread the spores far and wide.” he thought some more, and that mushroom was as big as a skyscraper, a fungal mountain of sorts. He doubted even if they worked together, they could rip it fully from the soil, and if they couldn’t the remaining portions would just regenerate the rest of the vegetal mass.
“I don’t see us being able to just rip it out of the ground, either. It’s too big and it’s too likely to spread its fungal bloom when we move it.”
If it was absorbing the life energy of the things around it, maybe some of their spiritual energy could be used to simply overload the mushroom’s receptors and force it to explode or be able to process all the energy it was gaining and crash that way? He didn’t want to risk Ty doing it, though, and he didn’t even know this other guy.
“We could try to over load it with spiritual energy and life energy, to see if the spiritual pressure is enough to rupture it and release all the spiritual energy it’s been absorbing back into the ecosystem around it and thus prevent it from being a real threat until it can be safely removed.”
It was an idea, albeit a rough one. It could work, an unless the sleeping creature named Glacia was some sort of ice spirit and not just named for a bottle of water brand, it was the best idea that they had.

In a blink of an eye Korr disappeared, she could not detect his ki signature, he did not seem the type to leave without a word, and she wondered if he was lost again. It would be impossible to look for him now, she had not spent nearly enough time with the hermit to lock-in on his life energy to begin the search, with a disappointed sigh she flew over to Cayle. Ocean teal eyes looked into his eyes and nodded at him. Her fingers intertwined with his as she raised her freehand on the mushroom, as soon as Cayle did the same, she began to channel her ki energy on the hollow mushroom, it began to crack on the surface as it was overloaded as the full blooded saiyan suspected.
The infected mushroom began to char, the smell was quite unpleasant, it forced Ty to cough from the fumes, and soon enough the rest of the mushroom began to quake the ground they were standing on. With her hand clasped with Cayle’s she took flight as the mushroom tumbled over, it’s heavy weight uprooted itself, and collapsed into blacked ash. Tiger Lily raised her hood and instinctively hovered over her boyfriend’s face to protect him from the soot, using her free arm to close the gap between them, and waited until the sunlight returned as it was no longer obscured from the unnatural spore cloud.
“The mushroom forest is safe again.” Ty smiled, stealing a kiss from Cayle since they were flying so close to each other, and then sighed again. “Orizuru and Korr...they have been on their own for this long, they probably prefer it that way, right?”
The red head lowered her arm, dusting the soot off, and lowering her hood realizing they were both quite filthy. “We should go back to the hotel and change out of our clothes before reporting back to Pilaf Corp.”

Cayle focused on pushing his spiritual energy forward, as much as he could, at the mushroom as they flew there. The Saiyan former farm boy’s breath sped up as he focused on spiritual energy production while holding back enough to not actually make his spiritual energy pressure spike to the point that it showed up on the sensors off any would be watchers who were looking out for high power spiritual energy users.
As the mushroom began to char, it also began to expand rapidly in width and height, then contract even more rapidly, as if it was trying to fight to be able to digest the spiritual energy which it was facing. Keeping the pressure up with one hand pushing spiritual energy, but not an energy blast, at the mushroom, Cayle used his off hand, that is to say his right hand, to wipe his forehead free of sweat, and then let out a long breath.
As Ty dived in front of him when the mushroom finally began to burn and collapse, his own scarf had already moved up to cover his face, and only came down for their momentary kiss. He smiled to her, before giving a nod, “Perhaps that is the case, but who can tell? The mushroom might have planted spores and we didn’t notice it. But what I can say is that you’re possibly right about Orizuru and Korr. I’ve never seen people show up and disappear like that, but I’m not an Earthling, so I don’t know what is normal about that.”
As he dusted off his work clothes and she suggested that they go to Pilaf Corp for payment in a change of clothes, he shook his head. “We’ll look more maniac if we show up like this, so our negotiation of final pay will be higher. Plus, we can make them comp us some replacement clothes and the money for taking it to the laundry or replacing it. Don’t you want some free Pilaf land Swag?”
It wasn’t as if they didn’t have tons of stores. And Alien Cayle might be. That didn’t mean he was not clever when it came to working the game of Capitalism. Nonetheless, he picked up a few pieces of the mushroom as evidence, and then took Ty’s hand to fly with her towards the Pilaf Corporate facility they were supposed to report to.

Tiger Lily smirked about showing up in black mushroom soot, even more so when he mentioned legal compensation, but Pilaf Land swag made her grin instead. While it was not dishonest to negotiate the terms of their contract, she did not like taking advantage of people, and the contractor seemed kind enough to abide by the additional terms. With a nod she took Cayle’s hand to fly over to Pilaf Corp Headquarters to report on their findings. The half saiyan had taken pictures of the site and provided the details involved in taking care of the infestation. Spore like clouds had formed which meant the possibility of another infestation could occur again and would require careful monitoring. It seemed that the mushroom forest was not quite out of the woods yet and would require additional contracts in the future with enhanced ki users.
