Upon Melody’s return to Truffle Village from the Southern Islands, an emergency meeting was called by the Grand Dukes in Oolong City, her presence was required since yesterday, and she was a day late to realize what had transpired. The village council sent Cress along with a no limit zeni credit card to make the journey to the city on behalf of the Duchess. However, no one received any updates of what transpired at the meeting and he never took his capsule corp phone to communicate with him. After looking through the expenditures online, there was a long list of purchases in a matter of sixteen hours, indicating that he had arrived in the city. After looking up the transactions they were all for the Casinos, bars, hostels, and several different love hotels. The Duchess took her frustrations out on the printed out paper practically setting it on fire from the friction of tearing it up. There was still hope, with every fiber of her being, that Cress did make it to meeting yesterday before splurging on Village property tax zeni for his private affairs. It was within his right to lavish these benefits as a vassal but what irritated her the most was the miscommunication which had not improved since they occasionally parted ways.
The importance of knowing what kind of representation her vassal had committed required her immediate departure in order to join him with no time for a proper wardrobe change. Melody was dressed in white high top sneakers, black stretch leather pants, a royal blue motorcycle jacket with white stripe design across the chest, and a black swim bikini top which was reminiscent of the Southern Island climate. At the expense of some of her conserved ki energy, she arrived in no time at all, remembering the last love hotel that was billed around five in the morning earlier. She predicted that after four hours he was still there and when she walked up to the building she picked up his power level surging to a particular rhythm. Gritting her teeth she scaled the outside wall of the building and kicked through the window of his room, shattering tempered glass to tiny cubes, and stepping inside. At first she wanted to give him the chance to explain himself, breaking into his room vented some of the rage she was feeling, and the situation intensified when the neon lights of the city spilled over the room. There must have been a dozen women, all of various races, a female Namekian was present, and that was about as strange as this situation was going to get.
“Get out! All of you! Except you! Your ass is pressed!” Melody growled at everyone present and pointed at Cress whom was sitting up from the bed, with a big yawn, he pulled onto the covers with dark circles under his eyes. She crossed her arms as she watched all the women scramble to gather their clothes, they all feared the green haired woman who broke through a tenth floor window, cowering at her presence, and they ultimately gave up halfway when the Duchess glared at them menacingly, forcing them to run out of the room half dressed into the hallway.
“You never reported back to the village council before your spree, tell me, what happened at the meeting with the Grand Dukes. Now.” Melody drew closer hovering over him with a vicious stare on her face, he rarely witnessed this side of her before, and he could sense that she was holding back from unleashing her anger on him through violence. It was a familiar feeling that he might have forgotten since his demon mother’s untimely death, during their first meeting in the guestroom, he imagined her holding the blade of her sword on his neck, and the idea flooded his thoughts again when she instinctively crossed her hand over to place her fingers on the pommel of her sword sheathed at her hip. The truth of the matter was, she had been stressed out from the long journey across the sea, it displeased her greatly that Cress lowered himself to such sinful standards, and she absolutely loathed that she cared about him so much despite his rotten behaviour that she was unaware of what she had done to trigger his suppressed ideas.

The heady scent of booze and cheap incense filled the air.
The room was dark, save for the neon flashing lights of the city outside the hotel room that spilled into the room through heavy, parted curtains. The sweat-soaked flesh of the two exhausted women felt warm and inviting to his skin, yet even pressed between their large bosoms, he could not free himself from the longing ache in his chest. No matter how much he drank, or gambled, or whored himself to the masses of available and willing women, he couldn’t make himself forget. He thought for sure the Namekian—who, by far, was the only one who came close to matching his libido—but even she couldn't purge his mind of the duchess.
Melody… she consumed his every waking moment.
But now that the fun had ended, there was little that remained save for what felt like a gaping abyss that sucked every ounce of artificial joy he managed to rouse within himself. He sighed, pushing himself up to a sitting position. His anxiety still hadn't faded; maybe he could use another cigarette. A soft purring filled his ears. Warm hands slid over his muscled stomach, down beneath the blankets around his waist. He glanced over to see the Namekian woman was awake and fully regenerated, ready for another go.
He wasn't opposed to another half hour of physical bliss. Not that he would get the chance to enjoy it.
Glass shattered and showered the room, spilling in the bright lights and constant drone of the city's nightlife. The girls scrambled and screamed as they all awoke, withering beneath the gaze of the intruder. Cress merely placed a cigarette between his lips and lit it. He didn't have to look to know who it was—he'd know that energy anywhere.
The girls half-scrambled to get dressed before rushing out of the room. The others were okay: a few humans and a couple neko girls, but he'd miss that Namekian woman the most. He should've gotten her phone number or address before he left.
It wasn't until Melody demanded that he tell her what took place at the meeting with the Grand Dukes that he swept his gaze upward and stared at her. Melody... already the humidity of the room created a slick sheen of sweat along her tanned flesh. Her green hair seemed to glow against the neon backdrop, and the way those leather pants fit her slender, athletic figure was oh so right.
A different beast stirred within him, and not the usual demon of carnage he fought for control. This one sought to devour Melody—heart, body, and soul.
"You disappear without a goddamn word, and now you show up in my hotel room unannounced demanding answers. Tch... you've got some nerve, woman." He took a drag on his cigarette, puffing the smoke out the corner of his mouth in her direction. "You sure as hell don't get to bust in here and demand things of me."
He tensed his jaw and locked his hardened stare onto her own.
He couldn't take it anymore.
Rough fingers clasped her arm and pulled her down onto the bed. He rolled over on top of Melody, both thick meaty arms pressed into the bed on either side of her, trapping her beneath him. His eyes glowed crimson as they drank her in, his heightened senses smelling the sweat and ocean on her skin. A smirk tugged at his lips as he flicked his still lit cigarette away across the room.
He didn't need it anymore. He had the object of his desire—the one who would finally subdue and satisfy the stirring emotion in him.
"So, maybe let's not talk and just... enjoy this room for a bit, yeah?"
He wasn't as drunk as before, yet the booze on his breath would have been obvious.
"All we do is talk and think. Think and talk. Let's not talk... let's not think. Let's just..."
His words faltered as he leaned in toward her.
It was time for a tasty snack.

Her violet eyes narrowed as he explained how equally disappointed he was with her unannounced intrusion, the lack of communication was partly to blame on him, and everyone trusted that he at least send a quick email about the meeting otherwise she did not have to resort to these extremes. Melody was fully aware of what he was doing in this room, they were in the red light district, and she hated being anywhere near it which was additional fuel to her rage. After the air from the outside settled into the room, she noted the moisture in the air combined with the smell of alcohol, incense, and tobacco. It revolted her but she only needed to tolerate it long enough to listen to her vassal speak.
Cress gripped her arm over her neon blue jacket, she only allowed him to because she figured he wanted to whisper something at her, she leaned her head to the side to make out his words, but to her surprise she was pulled in bed with him. With widened eyes, she stared up at him, listening to every word he had to say. While she kept a serious expression at him, she did not fear him, and was fully capable of defending herself even while he pinned her down with his entire exposed frame. There was absolutely no enjoyment to being treated this way, not in the same way the half demon felt, and she gave him the benefit of the doubt that he expected her to be willing at least.
Melody looked away towards the direction he flicked the cigarette across the room and looked back into his eyes. It was impossible to think in this situation, her human inhibitions were being manipulated on sight alone, and as he drew closer she could feel her heart beat faster for him. It was not anger that she was feeling anymore but a different emotion, like a magnet she was attracted to him, and she instinctively leaned towards him wrapping her arms around his neck to press her lips against his. It was not what she expected her first kiss to be, Cress was a dangerous force to be reckoned with, while she remained guarded around him for the past three seasons, it was curiosity that progressed their relationship further along. The Duchess wanted to make up her mind in this single moment between them, the taste of his mouth filled all of her senses, apart from feeling welcomed by his warmth, the lingering toxic flavor was sickening. The longer she explored his mouth with her tongue, the worst it became between the taste of alcohol and all the women he had been with; she had been enjoying more refined flavors in her life compared to Cress, he was not remotely tolerable, and so she pulled away disappointed in herself for giving into him.
“Are you satisfied now? Because, I am not.” That is all she had to say, removing her arms from his neck, and slipping out from under him to stand over the bed again. Melody was equally as lethal as her counterpart and she unsheathed her sword from her back; the neon lights from the outside danced along the surface of the well polished metal. They were long overdue and she was not going to forgive him for wasting her time drinking out of the devil’s cup of temptation.

He got what he wanted. He got Melody. So... why did it feel so wrong? Her arms wrapped around his neck, her fingers curled deep within his raven-colored locks. Their mouths pressed together in a way that caused his heart to skip a beat or two. And yet still... something was missing. What was it? Her lips left his and Cress opened his eyes.
Melody slipped from his grasp and he found himself leaning back against his elbows, the sharp point of her blade held against the soft flesh of his throat. Her words rang in his mind. She felt nothing? Nothing at all? It wasn't the fireworks he had envisioned all this time, but he wasn't completely void of any emotion toward her. Was this the price to be paid for pursuing his own fate?
A blade held against his throat? His jaw tensed, every muscle in his body coiling with the revelation of her rejection. "So, that's how it is, huh? Use me for what you need and when I no longer serve a use, you get rid of me?" Black energy began to surround his form as his power level began to rise, no longer suppressed as he was before.
Perhaps Melody would be surprised to note that his power level now far exceeded that which it was before—a sign of his training paying off. He was almost comparable to her now. And that meant his little oath to serve as her vassal no longer meant a goddamn thing. "Fine. If that's how you want it, Mel. I won't tell you a thing about that meeting. Just try and get it out of me!"

Melody could not meet his eyes, her gaze was cast away as he spoke up, and with a perplexed expression she was trying to suppress the feeling that she missed him, too. Based on Cress’ words he had expressed an impractical method of saying that he did. For the first time in her life, it pained her to be so cold, especially towards him, after all the time they spent in the village getting to know one another, she reflected on the fact that he only wanted her for a desert after having his fill from the other women; or rather it was impossible to fulfill his desires if he still wanted more as it went against her personal beliefs. All the feelings in her heart were like a whirlwind of emotions and she felt her breath almost harden from the pressure in her chest. It was instinct to fight against her vassal, his behavior had been unchecked long enough, and if she wanted him to improve then she need to outwit him in order to convince him that he still needed her. “I am nothing like these women in the red light district—“ Melody’s voice cracked, she could tell that her emotions were coming out the more she focused her attention towards him so she kept looking away, “I received reports from the village council. You could have called me if you wanted to—As Duchess, I must hold myself to a higher standard, my virtue is my entire life.” Confidence returned to her voice, she was cold again, and this time she met his gaze when spoke with a tone, “I cannot allow my heirs have everything I dedicated my entire life to build up, just to have their territory taken away from an elder sibling bastard born from some red light district whore you managed to reproduce with!”
It was the wrong answer, she realized that after she said it, but it was partially the truth as to why she could not be around him so much. Temptation had been luring her closer to him for so long that she did everything in her power to convince herself that they were not evenly matched, despite how attracted she was to him physically. In addition, she admired his best qualities in his new found courage and growth to become the best swordsman of the entire Western Lands. It was simply not enough, while he had been indulging in his wild escapades, she had been occupying her time in the Southern Islands to prevent herself from twisting together ideas of all the possibilities. While she typically handled her problems head on, this was a matter of pride, and she had avoided the matter because she deserved to be respected. “I deserve the respect and love by the person I get to marry someday. I must hold myself to higher standards than this hell hole. I cannot stand another minute here, come fight me outside if you’re a real man.” Melody cursed under her breath, gritting her teeth a few times from how shameful it was for her to be here, and with a running start she leaped out of the window. She landed on the black shingle tiled roof of the pagoda building across the street and began channeling her concentrated ki to her drawn blade. [556] [1,796]

Her words stunned him into silence. He stared at her with a sullen expression, his semi-permanent scowl even more pronounced at the duchess's words.
Why wouldn't she look at him? In that way she was much like Zeranna—she felt his presence was barely tolerable, and his existence hardly worth acknowledging. Cress didn't understand why Melody was so upset. What did it matter if he decided to come to Oolong City and have a little fun after their meeting? What business of it was his that some pig descendant was murdered?
The world was made up of two types of people—the strong and the weak. Either be strong enough to survive, or be trampled to death underfoot. Cress didn't see the purpose of having an entire investigation around something that happened naturally in the wild every day.
Could she really be so angry with him over such trivial news?
It was all just a big misunderstanding.
"Whatever. Don't go overboard with the accusations, alright? I'm just having a little fun—"
Once again he was cut off by the sudden shift in her tone. Before she could scarcely keep her voice from wavering or even muster up the courage to look him in the eyes, yet now her glare was prevalent and pierced him through with icy determination as she stated she would not allow her future heirs' claim to her duchy be challenged by the son of some red light district whore.
Cress assumed she was just going on one of her typical self-righteous spiels and was reaching for his discarded pants to dig out a second cigarette. His eyes widened at her and he dropped the crumpled carton altogether at her words.
"W-What—?!"
Heirs? Who the hell said anything about heirs? What was this lady on about?
Yet even as the question was asked, the words Melody did not speak hung heavy in the air between them. Was there some sort of expectation she had towards him? She had expressed more than once her desire to bolster the strength of her duchy through a marriage pact, but as far as Cress could tell, not once had Melody named a suitor.
And why would her heirs be challenged by...
Wait a second.
If he had gotten any of those women pregnant—he had never quite been a 'pull out' sorta guy—and sired children by any of them, the only way that would threaten Melody's children was if... if her suitor were...
"You're... you don't mean me, do ya?"
He could scarcely believe his own words.
"You've got to be kidding m— why the hell wouldn't you— what the hell's goin' on here—?!"
He couldn't get a word out edgewise because his mind remained a jumbled mess as he pieced her emotional words together. Melody didn't spare him a second to do so at all—she was done talking. Her haughty nature shone through in the mire of the cesspit of the hotel room, and she laid down the gauntlet once and for all before making a quick exit.
"Get back here, goddamn it! I'm not done talkin' to you!"
He hopped around on one foot as he tried pulling on his pants and toppled over onto the ridiculous fuzzy red carpet. Cress swore and pounded a fist against the floor, cursing his inebriated state. Wriggling into his pants, he didn't bother with his shirt and shoes as he ran and dove out the window after her. The roof of the padoga shook as he landed a few yards away from her.
Her energy spiked wildly as it danced along her drawn blade. There was a cold look in her eyes: it was the same flash of anger he'd seen in them the night Melody killed his mother. She was done playing games.
She was ready to fight.
"You know what? I didn't ask for any of this! I never wanted to be your dumb vassal to begin with! I didn't ask to come to Oolong City, and I sure as hell never signed up for any goddamn kids!"
An energy rift tore open in front of him as Cress reached inside and pulled out both his demon's blade and grimoire—both posthumously gained after his mother's death. The grimoire hovered open in front of its master, flipping to the center of the spell book of its own accord as he brandished the deadly blade at Melody, his own energy spiking in response.
"I think we both knew this day was coming. All I've been is a pet project to you and your silly council. No more! I didn't let you kill my mother just so you could turn me into your slave! You want me to straighten the hell up, be obedient to you? Kick my ass. Otherwise, we're done here!"

“I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I first met you, either. Ever since that fateful spring festival, I spend every waking moment thinking about you, wondering what you are doing...wishing you would at the very least call me, so I can hear your voice even when I am an entire continent away. No matter how much I occupied my time throughout the day, I did not stop thinking of you. This torment has to end, it is fruitless, and getting in the way of the future I am trying to build. So it all ends here, these delusions have plagued me for the last time, and it will all be over in a final blow.”Melody’s voice kept changing tone between explaining how she felt about Cress with an open heart and getting over her weakness by defeating him once and for all to strengthen her motivations. Every time she held her blade, it carried with it the weight of her aspirations as Duchess, and her clouded mind began to clear up as her body tensed up with a dancing electrical aura that surrounded her entirely. There was a nagging pain in her left arm, she quickly unzipped her jacket and lowered the sleeve to reveal a darkened handprint over the skin of her bicep, Cress inflicted it on her while she kept her guard lowered to pull her into bed with him. Gritting her teeth, she slipped back into the sleeve, leaving the jacket open to expose her black bikini top and hourglass curves. At this moment her power level took a dive, the interior mesh lining of the jacket was weighted, as she concentrated her control of her surging power. “...” She parted her lips to speak but not words would come out. The revelation that the demoness chasing after Cress that fateful dawn was a shock to Melody, at no point did he ever hint who she was, and his mother being a demon meant he was one too; it was no wonder he required to sate his sexual appetite, it was a typical demon’s desire to continue the legacy of plaguing the lands around the world with their kin. The truth finally connected all the broken pieces together, the reason his blood was darker, the ability to absorb the powers of the grimoire, and after all this time he did not take revenge on the Duchess. Every time they smiled at each other before must have been painful with every passing day. Melody slept on top of his mother’s grave without a second thought and he never uttered a word of it every time they had looked at each other. A clash between swords would finally be able to ease each other’s pain after so long. It was destiny to come this far, everything they believed in each other had been interpreted incorrectly, and there was no solution but to fight it out. “I am sorry, Cress. I really fucked up this entire time...you don’t have to forgive me.” Melody wiped the tears from her violet eyes with her left hand and resolved to attack him first. “I just can’t hold back anymore.”Melody rushed up, her kitten heel white sneakers sounding off against every shingle in her path on the roof of the pagoda tower, closing the distance in a green blur of her hair, and swung her sword gripped tightly in her right hand, sweeping it upwards, from the side of his left hip up towards his right shoulder at a precise angle. Her words make no sense. Melody has blown either hot or cold for as long as he has known her. She is distant and formal one moment, and then cold and elusive the next. And what of those times where she is friendly, nurturing, and compassionate toward him?
How often would they sit up late into the night as they hung out in Melody's personal chambers, playing some complicated board game he just couldn't quite wrap his head around? Cress felt it was a waste of time—what did silly children's games have to do with becoming stronger? But Melody, ever patient, always taught him the virtue and benefit of patience—of learning to read and study the field and the opponent so as to think several steps ahead and assure one's own victory.
Dominate, decimate, and destroy. Mother had never taught him anything otherwise. He had never known his father, save for what Mother told him: he was a weak and ineffectual fighter, and was killed in battle because of that.
How long had that fear driven him to be powerful? So as to not wind up some pointless footnote in the annals of history, much like his father?
Melody offers a different way of seeing things. One can be strong yet tactful. Brute strength alone did not shape and change one's destiny. She has taught him much in such a short span of time, and for that he is grateful. And what of her smile and her laugh? Even now the mirth of her voice resonates in his aching heart.
It is little wonder, then, that he felt betrayed when she left him without so much as a goodbye.
Yet now she stands here as his accuser?
Laying blame and guilt at his feet for something Cress could never have predicted? Did she have feelings toward him? He could not understand anyone looking upon him with anything other than disgust. How could it be possible for Melody to feel anything towards him? He could not understand these things, and here she was determined to destroy those very feelings before Cress has even had a chance to comprehend them.
Fine.
Why should he care?
He never believed for a single moment things could be different for him. He says nothing in response to her words; he raises his blade to defend as she strikes first, coming at him like some green-streaked blur against the glowing neon backdrop of the city. This is different, though—Cress can sense it. There is true malice in her blade, fueled by her own aching heart.
Cress rapidly coats his body in a dense layer of demonic ki and raises his blade to parry, yet the tremendous force of her blow shatters his guard with pathetic ease. It tears through his protective barrier as if it were tissue paper. Searing pain fills his being at the deep gash her blade leaves in his chest and abdomen, black blood spilling onto the ground as he staggers backward from the blow.
He refuses to cry out, and give her the satisfaction of knowing she hurt him. Both in body, and in soul.
His wound feels as if its on fire, and though his demon energies work to repair the wound, it does little to dull the pain. So he uses it to his advantage to fuel his own rage: at her rejection, at her unfair expectations, and finally, at her attempt to literally kill the very object of her affections.
"You'll have to do better than that!"
His powerful arms tense as he swings his blade full force, unwilling to hold back against such an intimidating foe. Regardless if it hits he seeks to create distance between them, but with each rasping breath the pain in his chest wound grows worse.
But he won't go down without a fight!

For the longest time Melody had been a silent observer, she learned to read people by steadily watching every action, being able to understand body language as apart of her mastery in swordsmanship, and discerning the lies from the truth. The only love she ever felt was from her grandfather up to the age of five until his passing, afterwards she began hardening her heart for the last twenty five years in order to take her position as Duchess in a duel. While the villagers revered her, smiled, and showered her with gifts most of them feared her in a way by trying to keep her in high spirits. Cress was the only one who was constantly himself around her, she thought that he was genuine, and fell in love with him despite how crude he had been. There were many times when he called her different names, denied her of wanting to do anything, but still followed through like she expected him to. Melody knew very well that it was foolish to submit to someone as vulgar as Cress but her heart kept telling her otherwise. The idea of their relationship blooming towards a bigger future filled her thoughts, dreams, and soon enough she started believing in the strong feelings she had for him after spending four seasons with her vassal; during that time she remained unchanged, constantly observing, and keeping her feelings secret. All of those passing days with Cress were under the pretense that he remained in the village under his own volition, the truth about the demoness being his mother was so well hidden, that it made her feel sick to her stomach. While his past was never an issue to the present, she realized that not knowing it caused this massive rift between them, apart from everything else he wanted to leave her, and the only parting memory she had to offer was to cut him down to prove that she was always going to be ahead of him. Another scar on his body for him to always remember her by until they meet again. “Did you really think that after all this time you could take me on without a challenge? You kept on provoking me with your rude words and foul language. Do you think you are better than me? What do you have to show for it? I have done nothing but treat you well since that fateful spring.” Melody spoke with icy words until her heart started beating faster, her voice lowered, almost sounding desperate for reprieve, “You’re such a nuisance, how did I ever fall in love with someone like you...it doesn’t make any sense, stop tormenting me, you don’t even care about what will become of us, you’re such a scoundrel!”The lightning aura continued to dance around her body, shocking Cress as he lowered his sword to strike at her without hesitation, she raised her own blade to guard against the assault, the crushing pressure still followed through pushing her back and wounding her internally; ripping through over extended muscles in her thighs in an attempt to support his strength. Taking deep breaths, her violet eyes remained focused on him, and she had every intention to bury him along with her feelings for him. When Melody held her sword to strike at each of his arms, there was no hesitation in her stride, every movement was precise, and she moved her body with finesse. [577] [2,968]

Melody's words are full of raw emotion. They echo to him across the shattered tile of the black shingled roof level atop the padoga where they waged their battle. Her eyes flashed violet in the night, tears brimming unbidden as she poured out her heart to him. She spoke of things he could not understand—of the love she bore in her heart toward him, and how he was unworthy of such love. And now he was driving her to commit this action so as to snuff out the feelings he had dredged up within her.
Her blade arcs toward him.
After her first staggering blow, these strikes are bee stings in comparison yet their precision is deadly as she strikes at him again and again. Cress grits his teeth and does his best to parry each stabbing blow, though each time their swords clash in a shower of sparks it sends shards of pain through his chest wound. The aura of lightning zaps and crackles around her, shocking him with numbing bolts that smolder upon his skin where struck.
He grits his teeth and retreats a few steps.
How is he supposed to get past her aura, much less her guard?
Why is this happening? It has to be more than just how he chose to spend his evening. How many times had he tried to goad Melody into a fight before now? It never mattered before. But all of a sudden, his behavior bothers her?
No. He's not going to take the blame for something he never understood. Even if he felt it in his heart, that didn't mean a damn thing. "We're just too damn different, Mel. We have been from the beginning! You don't love me. You can't love me, because you don't know the REAL me. I'm a monster—plain and simple. All I wanna do is screw, fight, and kill. I have no ambitions, and no matter how many chains you thrust on me, it won't change a damn thing? You hear me!? I'm not your puppet!"
He won't give her the satisfaction of knowing how much of his heart she's captured. He won't beg her for forgiveness.
Cress will simply take her down once and for all, and move on with his life. Because Melody, too, is merely a stepping stool.
His black aura flares to life as launches into the air, coming down at her with a heavy overhead swing of his blade! He follows it up with multiple quick slashes and stabs, pressing the offensive advantage as he seeks to drive her back and force his way through her guard.
Her aura zaps him again and again, but the half-demon grits his teeth and presses forward.

The glint in Melody’s violet eyes that represented the hope that there was any possibility for a romantic relationship between them dulled the moment her heart broke to pieces from his words of rejection. The pain in her heart was so deep she instinctively raised her left hand at the tip of his sword, the entire length pierced between two of her finger bones of her palm, her blood gushed between them covering his bare chest as he continued in the follow through, blood sprayed on her face and exposed navel. She felt none of the repercussions of the wound he inflicted because she already felt like dying from her broken heart at this exact moment, her ankles buckled as she pulled her hand away cutting the webbing of skin between her middle and ring finger. Cress watched as she fell on her knees bowing before him, pathetically, her ruined left hand swept the black shingles of the roof with blood, and she lined up her palms together with her thumbs touching. It was what he always dreamed of, to have the Duchess bow down before him, but it was simply a gesture known across the Western Lands as the deepest apology to a person, and she spoke with remorse keeping her eyes cast down on the ground to hide the tears that trailed down her rose colored cheeks. “Cress, you don’t have to accept my love for you, but please accept my deepest apology for killing your mother. She gave you life, and as a result I was able to meet you, but I have nothing to prove to you after murdering her in cold blood while protecting the village. I have learned that love is absolutely flawed. It is my greatest weakness to have harbored these feelings for you without knowing the real truth all this time. I never should have hoped or dreamed that you would return my feelings now or ever… I cannot let this change me… I have suffered the greatest pain in my entire life and that is enough…”It took her a minute of groveling on her hands and knees before she recollected herself, closed her heart, and began taping up her hand up with a medical tape roll she pulled out of her jacket pocket. Melody was grateful that Cress kept his sword sharpened, she had a clean cut from her injury, and the bleeding stopped once the wound was tightly wrapped up. The expression on her face turned cold, the white of her eyes were red and her violet irises dull from feeling, it was the new beginning she needed to continue the goals she set without him. In the back of her mind she figured that if she left him ruined by her blade then they could both be able to move on for a time and never cross paths again unless he challenged her for a fight. It was all the motivation she needed to never submit to him again because her life depended on it. She promised herself that every day after tonight would be spent getting stronger in order to cut down anyone who got in her way without slowing down. She got up slowly, sword gripped tightly in her hand, and continued to lash out at him, she wanted to break this man with the fury of her dying heart. “Thanks for the memories.”[568] [3,615]

She caught his blade with her own bare hand. It tore through her flesh, sending blood splashing against his chest as tiny flecks peppered his face. Melody dropped to her knees as her head and shoulders bowed beneath some invisible weight that had rested on her shoulders all of this time. She said it again—she mentioned that word.
Love.
It burdened her heart in so painful a way. She confessed to her love once again, apologizing for killing his mother in her efforts to defend Truffle Village against the mad demoness. Yet it was her final words that got to him; this newfound love that she bore in her heart for him had done naught else but cause her great pain, and her tone made it clear she was dangerously close to sealing her heart off forever.
Something swelled up inside of his chest. His breath hitched in his throat.
Cress withdrew his blade and stared at the dark blood that stained it. Her blood. The blood of the very woman that had haunted his every waking thought and every dream for the past several months. Hours ago, he desired nothing more than to see her and hold her in his arms. He cherished her smile and her laughter, and the way her eyes lit up at the sight of him.
All this time Cress had convinced himself that this were merely an illusion—some fantasy he had concocted in his mind to explain away the ever encroaching doubt that lingered in his heart. No one had ever loved him before, not even his own mother. In her eyes, Cress was but a tool by which she would take over the entirety of the world.
Now she was dead, along with her ambitions, and it left him feeling cold and empty inside.
"Mel..."
He wanted to say something—to express how it was he felt. But all too soon the moment passed and Melody rose to her feet. Her gaze toward him hardened yet again, and so did her heart.
She sought to make good on he promise as she came at him once again, brandishing her blade as the very weapon she would use to strike him down—and the love she bore in her heart for Cress—all at once. Her blade pierced his left shoulder as she struck him, forcing his arm to immediately go numb from the searing pain that stabbed into him.
He sucked in a sharp breath and staggered backward. His katana dropped from his hand and clattered to the edge of the roof, the fingers of his left hand no longer able to grip or feel anything.
The same could not be said for his heart. It resonated with the words she spoke, and such fear gripped him at the thought of the one person who had ever genuinely loved him withdrawing it forever. Cress surged forward toward Melody, but he didn't attack her. His left arm dangled limply at his side yet his right slid around her waist and pulled her close.
He crushed her small body against his own. Tears streamed down his cheeks and wet the top of her head as Cress held her close and tight, as if he feared she would vanish the moment he let her go.
"Duchess... my mistress."
He buried his face into her hair, his words muffled and nearly lost against the backdrop of city noise that surrounded them.
"I... love you. I think I've loved you for a while now. But love's not something I've ever understood. You get it, ya doofus? I can't tell the difference... you gotta teach me, alright? I promise I'll stick around."
His grip loosened as he fell to his own knees in a posture that poorly mimicked her own just mere minutes before. He cradled his injured arm to his side as bowed his head in shame. He had never regretted a single thing in his life before tonight—now it filled him to the brim with bitter disgrace.
"I disgust myself, yanno? I hate me. I've always hated me. How can you love me?"
He raised his head to peer at her, tears streaming from his eyes.
"Why even keep me around? Just put me outta my misery already!"

The moment her blade pierced right through Cress, Melody held her breath as she narrowed her eyes when he intentionally dropped his katana, and she gripped her sword firm enough to turn the skin over her knuckles white. The lightning Aura ceased as he drew near, she forced her feelings to remain suppressed, but with his hand at her bare waist being pulled into an embrace made her heart flutter again, and he went through all the names he typically called her by. The tone of his voice changed and she could feel herself become disarmed by his words as if time stopped just long enough to give up the fight. It seemed that they were both confused about the love they felt for each other, at some point she was starting to think it was destiny. The realization of losing him from her side haunted her again, she watched him kneel down before her which only revived the pain she was feeling while begging for forgiveness, and she dropped on her knees along with her sword to hug his neck. “I just don’t want to wake up without you by my side... as selfish as that is. I am not sure when my feelings for you changed. I might have been in love with you before I even met you… and I know how strange that sounds. It has nothing to do what you have done or said, just looking at you has always been enough for me but I honestly want more from you than I should. Can we start all over again? I want to know everything about you… without having to rush in, rather than keep on pretending to know anything about you. If we can at least be friends and earn each other’s trust again then maybe… we ...can be more than that if our feelings remain the same or grow even more.”
Melody pulled away and stood up, to make up for their height difference, her trembling hands held his jaw, and she looked deeply in his eyes as she leaned down to kiss him a second time, she felt like her heart would burst as she affirmed her love with a more passionate kiss than before. There was heat between their lips, she was so close to drawing out more than she could handle in their exchange, and she had to stop before she reached that point. It was difficult to breathe when her whole body felt like it was set on fire. The Duchess looked away seemingly embarrassed for allowing her human inhibitions take over just by being so close to Cress. There was a gravitational difference with their first kiss and it was the location, just like there is a perfect time and a place for everything. After taking a few seconds to recover she smiled weakly at him and sighed. “Ugh… my legs feel like jelly, if I didn’t strain myself earlier, you would have broken both of my femur bones with just your pressured weight alone.” Melody picked up her sword and sheathed it, taking the time to retrieve his katana to hand it back. “We can fight again some other time, maybe this time without trying to kill each other, unless… you are into that kind of thing, I can make the effort to comply.” She chuckled softly at the thought since he seemed to be the type to be into that. “Let’s hit the public baths and get all these wounds stitched up by a medic before they get nasty. I am sure you know where to find both around here. Then you can tell me all about the emergency meeting with the Grand Dukes.”

He waits for the final stroke of her blade. Cress wonders if it'll hurt when he dies.
His life has been filled with so much pain already—how nice would it be for the suffering to end all at once? Where will he go after he dies? Will he be thrown into HFIL with his mother? He knows she isn't dead. She'll return, whether it takes ten years or a hundred. A demon's soul is immortal. Will he spend eternity in Hell with her, being tormented for his failures and mistakes?
Cress can only hope Melody grants him a final measure of mercy.
Warm hands slip around his neck and hold him tightly. His face is pressed into the crook of her neck: the smell of sweat, blood, and the ocean mingles on her skin. Her voice is a wavering whisper in his ear—she speaks as if no one else in the world exists beyond them. She loves him. She loves him with every part of her being, but she's just as confused as he is.
She wants to reset the clock and start over. Melody wants for her and Cress to know each other on an intimate level of friendship, and should they be so lucky—should their desire bloom bright and beautiful against the backdrop of their growing love—perhaps find themselves engaged in the intimacy the pair of them so desperately desired.
She releases him, catching his face in her hands. Cress stares up at her, a numbness spreading throughout all of his being. His body is paralyzed, caught in her thrall. Her eyes are glowing orbs of violet that shine with love, compassion, and pity. It drives her to meet his lips with yet another kiss—a kiss that steals the very air from his lungs.
The cold in his heart, lodged there many decades ago, begins to retreat. His strong hands cling to her like the life raft the duchess is, and Cress finds he is wholly powerless to resist her. They teeter upon a precipice, but before they can plummet over into the dreaded unknown, Melody pulls away from him. She seems almost embarrassed as she retrieves his weapon and hands it back to him.
"Thanks," he mutters.
With a wave of his hand, it disintegrates in her grasp in a wash of black flames returning to the pocket dimension from which he summons it.
"Public bath sounds good to me... there's a place nearby we can get to. I'll take us there."
Without waiting for her consent, he uses his uninjured arm to scoop her up and over his shoulder like a sack of flour. He snakes an arm around her thighs to keep her secure against his large shoulder, and with a smirk, allows his hand to find itself resting against her derriere. Cress can't help himself—he gives her behind a little squeeze, the flesh ripe and lovely beneath his grip.
"Whoops. My hand slipped. Let's go, princess."
He takes a running leap and jumps off the roof, plummeting toward the ground below.
The wooden door splinters, sending shards exploding outwards from the entrance to the bathhouse as his heavy boot kicks it in. Various screams of surprise fill the air as a number of women turn to see the big man stomp into the tiled room, carrying a green-haired woman over his shoulder.
"In the name of Duchess Melody, I'm commandeering this place. In other words, get the hell out."
They don't have to be told twice.
The women exit the steaming baths, blushing with anger and embarrassment as they rush to gather their robes and sandals. Soon the place is empty, with only the pair of them remaining behind. Cress sets Melody down gingerly, unwilling to injure her any more than he already has before.
"Sorry 'bout the rough trip. I'm still learnin' how to teleport—Mother's got a whole goddamn arsenal of spells. I'll figure it out eventually. There's also a couple of healing spells, too—my magic's not that potent yet so it may take a while, but I can definitely get you patched up. And don't bother bitchin' to me about it, either—ya don't get a say in the matter."
He kicks off his heavy boots and unfastens his pants, letting them fall down to his calves. Moments later, Cress stalks into the hot water and sighs, letting the steam wash over him as he sinks into a corner of the large public bath.
"I'll have ya fixed up in no time... just let me rest for a sec."
The nasty gash her sword left on his chest is healing, but the residual ki from her assault makes it more difficult than usual.

Cress’ silent response to starting over meant he was willing to try, Melody felt relieved for a bit before he daringly lifted her up suddenly and squeezed her inappropriately. With a blush she gave in, she allowed it because she almost killed him, and the mood was quite sour up to this point so it was necessary. With a melancholy expression on her face, she propped her right elbow on his back to hold her chin up, as he carried her down a few streets to a public bath house. He was back to his usual self of breaking doors that were paid for by courtesy of Truffle Village; it would be more economical to start a door business to make up for all the damage the demon had been causing. Demon? Melody thought for a moment realizing what that meant, not all demons were evil, and she placed her trust in a few that she met in her lifetime. The bathhouse was made empty by her vassal’s bellowing voice which became deeper by his smoking habit. To her surprise he let her down gently on a bamboo bench and listened to his explanation of being able to heal her without the need of a medic.
Seconds later he shamelessly stripped to get into the hot spring pool meant for at least fifty people and stepped right in. The water barely surfaced below his hip from his tall stature, he practically had to sit to be fully immersed in the steaming bath, but he needed to wait for his wounds to close. The wound on his chest and shoulder were still severe despite the slow healing process. With a sigh, she looked away to unbuckle her shoes with her right hand alone, and she stood up to wiggle out of her jacket which dropped on the bench and crushed it to pieces. The motorcycle jacket was weighted as there was never a dull moment to train her physique. With an injured hand it was going to take her minute to remove her form fitting leather pants but she managed it by shifting into an awkward dance. All she had on now was a black bikini that had actually soaked up the ocean waves prior to her arrival to the Western lands. If there was anything else she missed besides Cress it was the hot spring at home, it made her muscles recover faster, and she stepped in after him.
“Based on what I remember about your mother, she was way more manipulative than I ever was, and I swear you were having a hard time submitting to her will that fateful dawn. It must have been terrifying to see me… earlier after everything you may have been through growing up. So, are you ready to talk about that?” Melody offered, it was going to take a while to learn everything about his past, since he was a demon, it most likely meant he was older than he looked, “How old are you?”
It was common knowledge that demons lived longer than humans and she was aware that Duke Glacier was a half demon which is why he had been silently making alliances with neighboring villages by selecting the right candidates. Rather than wait for an answer she decided to discuss her own history, “Do you know your parents names? I never learned what mine were called and I forgot my grandfather’s name. I could ask Duke Glacier what it was, since the old man was still alive, after he took over Orchestra Village but I am too embarrassed to bother. My parents abandoned me to pursue music careers here in Oolong city so they would become rich and famous. I long lost hope in meeting them again. I would rather just learn from my past and move on… and someday be a better parent than mine ever were.”
Melody swallowed the lump in her throat, she never openly discussed these facts about herself to anyone, and her voice kept changing as she explained her past. She made sure to keep her hand above water, as she walked towards the deep end of the hot spring, the waterline was just about her ribs before she went any further in.
