Broken Destiny 1.1 - Slightly Less Broken Destiny
Hello everybody! We hope that you're enjoying the site since our grand launch! Now that it's been awhile, we've got some exciting changes to roll out that should address some of the issues we've been seeing with the system in its launch state! Nothing too dramatic has changed in the battle system itself- a little buff to Defense, some new items and artifacts, expanded vehicle rules, and the tragic removal of special technique ranks! The biggest change you're going to see here is to our rewards scheme- but it's good, we promise! Take a look below for all the juicy details.
1.1a Defense
We've been keeping an eye on some of the spars that have been happening, and we've noticed an alarming trend of, well... Defense feeling fairly weak. During initial design, Defense was seen to be as hypothetically quite strong, perhaps even the strongest of the statistics. As a result, its initial values were tamped down a bit, but Accuracy only increased as the system continued to be added to. As a result, we've accidentally ended up in a state wherein Accuracy versus Defense is somewhat lopsided favoring Accuracy. We don't want Defense to become some kind of god stat, so we're going to be making changes to it slowly- but we're definitely working to make it feel more impactful for character builds, especially those who want to focus on dodging attacks rather than outright tanking them.
-- Base Defense for all characters increased from 40 to 50.
-- Instinct Trait increased from +10 Defense to +15 Defense.
1.1b RP Rewards and Thread Rules
While watching and participating in threads, we've noticed that the reward scheme included at the site's launch didn't quite hit the mark we all were looking for. In particular, we noticed a strong emphasis being placed on large word count posts in places that we didn't exactly want to see large posts-- like spars, which are meant to be a bit snappier and more focused on the battle itself. We've shifted the multiplayer rewards around a bit and introduced a new bonus that'll help shore up the differences between the weakest and strongest members of the site.
RPG WRITING BASICS
Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny is a story-based, literary role playing game where you gain experience, and strength the more you write. IC posts should be PRIMARILY IC, and only IC writing (IE; not OOC notes, formatting, or the like) should be accounted for when it comes to word counts for gains. Additionally, plagiarized content is not allowed on this board.
Each thread type has its own reward structure, find out about the details below!
You may be in up to a total of four (4) threads simultaneously.
Personal Sagas
Personal Sagas are the least structured of thread-types found on DB:BD-- they can contain anything from a simple conversation to raiding a tomb for treasures! Personal Sagas are unique in that they are the only thread type whose rewards are solely based on word counts. Further, these threads receive a greater bonus from multiplayer participation- making this your best bet if you just want to sit down and write your heart out, especially with friends! If that wasn’t enough to tempt you into some Personal Sagas, Personal Sagas are the only thread type that grant treasure rolls as a standard bonus!
Every 1 word rewards 1 EP and every 10 words rewards 1 PL. Receive an additional 10% EP and PL rewards for each additional player participating in a Personal Saga, to a maximum of +50%.
Every 2000 words in a Personal Saga awards 1 bonus Treasure Roll, to a maximum of 10 Treasure Rolls per week.
Missions
Missions are adventures which are driven by the players but guided by an initial prompt given by the staff. Missions are designed to be quite rewarding to do in either solo or in a group. When doing a mission with multiple players, each player’s word counts contribute to the mission’s requirement- meaning it’s a wholly collaborative effort! Additionally, some missions may contain unique rewards only obtainable by completing a mission. Missions may be done only once per character. You may be in up to one (1) Missions at a time.
1 Star Missions: 2000 Word Requirement. Rewards 2,000 EP and 100 PL by default.
2 Star Missions: 4000 Word Requirement. Rewards 4,200 EP and 200 PL by default.
3 Star Missions: 6000 Word Requirement. Rewards 6,400 EP and 300 PL by default.
4 Star Missions: 8000 Word Requirement. Rewards 8,600 EP and 400 PL by default.
5 Star Missions: 10,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 11,000 EP and 600 PL by default.
6 Star Missions: 12,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 13,000 EP and 800 PL by default.
7 Star Missions: 14,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 16,000 EP and 1,000 PL by default.
Bounties
Where Missions are adventures which are player driven from an initial prompt given by staff, Bounties are adventures which BEGIN as player driven adventures guided by an initial prompt by staff, but are followed by a stat battle after the required words are completed. Bounties follow the same basic word/reward/ranking scheme as Missions, though the difficulty of the opponent(s) you battle varies based on the rank of the Bounty you are pursuing. Bounties award a bit less raw EP than their mission counterparts, but generally reward more PL as well as Zeni. Once a bounty has been taken, it cannot be taken again by another player(or set of players) unless the original player(s) fail. Bounties are potentially lethal, so please be aware of what you are signing up for when you take a bounty! Bounties do not award Life/Death Battle thread rewards. You may be in up to one (1) Bounty at a time.
1 Star Missions: 2000 Word Requirement. Rewards 1,500 EP, 250 PL, and 10,000 Zeni by default.
2 Star Missions: 4000 Word Requirement. Rewards 3,000 EP, 500 PL, and 20,000 Zeni by default.
3 Star Missions: 6000 Word Requirement. Rewards 4,500 EP, 750 PL, and 30,000 Zeni by default.
4 Star Missions: 8000 Word Requirement. Rewards 6,000 EP, 1,000 PL, and 40,000 Zeni by default.
5 Star Missions: 10,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 8,000 EP, 1,300 PL, and 60,000 Zeni by default.
6 Star Missions: 12,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 10,000 EP, 1,500 PL, and 80,000 Zeni by default.
7 Star Missions: 14,000 Word Requirement. Rewards 12,000 EP, 2,000 PL, and 100,000 Zeni by default.
Events
Where Personal Sagas are all in the hands of players, Events are the Gamemaster equivalent of Personal Sagas. Events are things which may be a surprise if a player asks for such a thing, or might be an event of story arc multiple players sign up for, ahead of time. They might be battles, they might be hunting down a big threat which would be too much for one player, they might be a simple story about a fishing village. It’s up to the Gamemaster, but because of the nature of them they have increased rewards for players- as it takes longer times and greater effort for players to participate in Gamemastered Arcs, missions, or events. You may be in up to one (1) Event at a time.
Events reward 1 EP for every 1 word and 1 PL for every 10 words written, plus a static 1,000 EP and 100 PL for every 10 posts made, cumulative across all players. Event Posts gain no rewards for words after 1,000 words are reached in each individual post, though you may receive bonus rewards from your GM for exceptional effort or quality.
Spars
Spars are non-final battles between player characters. They require both stat battle and roleplaying battle to be counted as a spar, but have a difference between themselves and the other type of statistic battle. Spars have no death involved, when you lose you simply notate on your character sheet that you lost a spar. You may be in up to one (1) Spar at a time.
Spars gain 1 EP per 1 Word written and 2 PL per 10 words written, up to a maximum of 800 words rewarded per post.
The Winner(s) receives an additional 1,000 EP and 200 PL; the Loser(s) receive an additional 500 EP and 100 PL.
Life or Death Battles
Life or Death Battles are final battles between player characters. They require both stat battle and roleplaying battle to be counted as a LoD Battle, but have a difference between themselves and the other type of statistic battle. LoD Battles always end in death, incapacitation, or other result of characters. Unlike Spars, LoD Battles also require a Gamemaster agreeing to oversee and judge before it even begins. You may be in up to one (1) Life or Death Battle at a time.
Life and Death Battles gain 2 EP per 1 Word written and 3 PL per 10 words written, up to a maximum of 800 words rewarded per post.
The Winner(s) receives an additional 2,000 EP and 400 PL; the Loser(s) receive an additional 1,000 EP and 200 PL.
The Dragon’s Share
At the beginning of each month, the Broken Destiny staff will take a snapshot of the highest Natural Power Level on the site(possessed by a Player Character.) Afterward, we will post an updated table that will look like the example below; this table will provide bonus rewards to most players on the site and is intended to help soften the power curve just a bit. You may receive rewards based on where you land within the table, and your bonus reward will always use your Natural PL at the start of a thread. This rewards bonus is applied after other modifiers have been applied.
Example Table:
If Cayle Pota had the highest Power Level at 10,000, the table would look like this:
If your Natural Power Level is less than 20%(2000) of Cayle’s, you gain an additional 50% Power Level rewards.
If your Natural Power Level is between 20% and 40%(2000 and 4000) of Cayle’s, you gain an additional 30% Power Level rewards.
If your Natural Power Level is between 40% and 60%(4000 and 6000) of Cayle’s, you gain an additional 20% Power Level rewards.
If your Natural Power Level is between 60% and 80%(6000 and 8000) of Cayle’s, you gain an additional 10% Power Level rewards.
If your Natural Power Level is between 80% and 100%(8000 and 10,000) of Cayle’s, you gain no bonus rewards.
1.1c Special Techniques Rank-Up Removal
When Special Techniques were first created, they had a rank-up system that was meant to be +5 Accuracy and +2 Damage per rank. There was an error in transcription somewhere along the way and those actual rules got lost, so some of you exceptionally creative types decided to go ahead and make your own rank-up perks! We thought that was great and really loved the extra element of choice that it brought to designing your own special techniques, so we got to work on standardizing the system a bit more to make it easier to approach. After considerable work and discussion trying to find that sweet spot of balance and fun, we came to an unfortunate conclusion in the face of some other problems the battle system was facing: Defensive applications of special techniques were simply far too good because of their action economy. Why bother with Defensive Techniques if your Offensive ones get the job done just as well? Then, there was the matter of the offensive power of Special Techniques being kind of high at the moment-- plus the Accuracy vs Defense dichotomy... so we ultimately decided that it was best to cut Special Technique rank-ups entirely for now.[/b]
What this means is that everyone with a special technique will need to remove the "Ranks" section of that technique. You will be refunded any MP you spent on Ranking that technique up, and may choose to convert it back into EP if you so desire. Additionally, we will allow players to change their Special Technique(s) to another Approved Technique(s) of their choice with no learn time or respec cost required for two (2) weeks following this patch. You may also resubmit your chosen technique(s) for approval to revise their current effects if this change altered the way you wanted them to function.
1.1d Vehicle Rules
Not a whole lot to say here! Vehicles didn't really have much in the way of an actual ruleset before, as they were somewhat hastily implemented. Below you'll find an actual rule-set for the, including some rules for how you can make your own!
TRAVEL RULES ADDENDUM, VEHICLES
Not everyone has flight, and not everyone who lacks it gets around on foot. Here at Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny we think that part of the adventure is getting there, and that vehicles help make that adventure interesting. As such, we’ve put a lot of thought and work into creating a series of customizable vehicle rules to allow you as players to create your own vehicles within the system, while allowing for it fit in the travel system without disrupting it. Vehicles may be vehicles, or mounts, but are called vehicles for systematic purposes. After you're done reading, a custom vehicle sheet can be found in the custom items forum of the site!
Vehicles do not take up item slots by default, though some Add-ons may change this.
Customization
What makes one ‘vehicle’ different from another is a combination of its speed, its description, and its systematic effects. As such, players have the ability to ‘upgrade’ and customize vehicles which they’ve gotten in missions, and also have the ability to create their own vehicles from scratch if they’re willing to invest the Zeni. The primary method of upgrading an existing vehicle are add-ons.
Vehicle Speed
The metric which we call "speed" of a vehicle here on DB:BD is determined by the amount of discount that it gives to a player for traveling when it comes to words, EP, or actual RL time. All three are options when it comes to travel and as such each has to be paid for separately when determining speed.
For every 1% of speed in one of those three fields, the cost is: 2,000 Zeni.
For every 10% of speed in one of those three fields, the cost is: 20,000 Zeni.
So a vehicle which has a speed of 10% in all three fields would cost from speed alone; 60,000 zeni. This means that vehicles can definitely get costly if you want them to be fast, but then again, a discount to travel is nothing to bat your eyes at!
Vehicles may not have their Speed improved after they are acquired.
Non-Artifact Vehicles may have a maximum of 50% reduction to each of the three travel options.
Add-ons
Add-ons are supplementary modifications to your vehicle which take up special space on your vehicle and really make them -different- from your average other vehicle on the road. They take up ‘add-on’ slots and cost their own amount in Zeni as well. Depending on the add-ons, your vehicle may be required to take up a battle items slot!
Add-on slots are may be purchased at any time. They cost an amount of zeni equal to 50% of the vehicle's base cost, as determined by their "Speed".
All vehicles begin with 1 add-on slot for free.
Comfortable Ride- With this add-on, up to 3 players may ride in you vehicle with you during travel. Players who choose to do so must pay 5000z and write 350 Words of Travel per Step ridden, instead of normal travel requirements. If at least one person uses Comfortable Ride in this way, every player sharing the vehicle will receive the "Well Rested" effect. The owner of the vehicle must still write normal travel requirements. 120,000 Zeni
Armored Plating- You may use your vehicle as a personal fortress of sorts. The first time you take damage in battle, you may instead use your vehicle as a shield- and have it provide 15 DR. Vehicles with Armored Plating take up an item slot in battle. 150,000 Zeni
Mobile Turret- You have some sort of weapon that’s got what in some places they’d call a “Big Damn Gun” on it. It might be a hold-out shotgun, a built in machine gun turret, or an old fashioned canon. Whatever it is, you’ve trained with using this weapon in short-term, rapid fire attacks. On the first attacking turn in battle you may use this item as if it was a bonus action capable attack dealing 4d8+4 damage. In addition, this attack uses your reflexes not your energy control to determine its accuracy. Vehicles with a mobile turret take up an item slot in battle. 150,000 Zeni
Camping Equipment- You may write an additional 500 words of travel to camp out, if you do so, you gain the well rested bonus at the end of your travel. 60,000 Zeni
Resistance Training Chain- This add-on allows you to gain an additional 2 PL per 50 words written while traveling. 60,000 Zeni
Basket and Saddle-bags- This add-on allows you to gain 1 Zeni per 20 words written while traveling. After all, you make best use of your travel by doing errands, and delivery, don’t you? 60,000 Zeni
Eye-catching- Increase your starting roll by 5. Your vehicle is eye-catching in someway and it distracts opponents ever so slightly. 60,000 Zeni.
Smuggler’s Compartments- Once per battle, you may switch any battle item which you have NOT used for one of three rare or below items listed in your ‘smuggler’s compartment’. 60,000 Zeni.
Disguise- Your vehicle allows you to blend in with the surroundings in some way or another. Maybe your van looks like an ice cream truck. Maybe your Motorcycle is covered with a box. Whatever the case, you’ve got a disguise on your vehicle that helps you cut down on the amount of time (aka words) needed to spend hunting down a bounty. You receive a reduction of 20% to the words required before a bounty must appear. 100,000 Zeni.
Recreational Equipment- Who knows what it is!? But it is something you couldn’t very well carry without your good old fashioned vehicle. That Surf Board, that Fishing Chest, those hunting blinds, whatever it is doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have fun, and you do have fun with the stuff your vehicle carries. This allows you to gain an additional 10% to Personal Saga rewards as if another player character was present. 100,000 Zeni.

And here's three new artifacts for the Lost Artifact list!
Bansho Fan
A large and magical fan once used to stoke the flames of a powerful magical furnace- a furnace that served as a portal to Other World atop a long forgotten mountain. It is said to have the power to control the weather, rumored to have the capability to raise a typhoon with a single wave, a thunderstorm with two and a monsoon with three.

Additionally, techniques you use on a turn in which Bansho Fan has been activated may not critically fail. The maximum chance to afflict any status effect is 95%.

Black Water Mist
A vial of a mist most foul. This mist is rumoured to have been distilled from the darkness of the Dead Zone itself and has properties that naturally enhance the aggressive, if not outright evil, tendencies of those who are exposed to it. 1.1g Respec Rules
It's inevitable- eventually, you might find yourself wishing that you had taken one technique over the other, or find that one trait wasn't working as well for you build as you'd like. Maybe even your character's IC fighting style shifts due to a new teacher and you want to change your build to reflect that-- that's what the Respec rules are for!
Respeccing Your Character
A "respec" is when you change existing attributes about your character to better reflect how you'd like them to play. There's not much to say in the foreward here- we think respeccing is fairly self explanatory. In short: pick what you want to change, pay a fee, change those things on your character sheet! The first respec of any section is free, with the exception of Classes(who follow their own free respec rules.) Some Patches may critically change aspects of the game and those patches will often come with free respecs for a limited period of time after their release.
Changing your starting skills: 2000 EP
Changing your existing traits: 2000 EP
Changing your existing techniques(No learn-time required; does not allow you to fill empty slots without learn times): 2000 EP
Changing your class traits and features: 2000 EP
Changing your class: 5000 EP.
Starting Over/Changing Your Character
Sometimes you are enjoying the particular mechanical build you have, but something about your character just isn't clicking with you. Maybe they completed their personal arc and would be content to retire as a combatant, or perhaps something major happened to them that irreversibly took away their will to fight-- whatever it is, sometimes you've got to start the RP anew. There is always the option of making an additional character and starting fresh entirely, but these rules are here in case you don't want to shelf the work you did on an existing character's mechanical progress.
There are currently no restrictions for changing your character, provided they are statistically the same. We will allow your race to change for free, though characters who previously possessed "Student of a Thousand Arts" will need to pay back the difference in MP for their technique rank-ups. Additionally, characters who possessed "Quick Learner" will be required to add the previously discounted number of weeks to the learn-time of their next technique, though they may choose to spend MP to reduce that amount; if you have filled all of your technique slots and possessed "Quick Learner" when changing your character's race, you also enter an MP debt as if you had discounted the learn-time of your techniques via MP normally.
1.1h Hotfixes and Misc Changes
- Giant Form's RP requirement wording changed to read, "Must be roleplayed as a substantial size increase." This allows someone to utilize it to RP a "Bulked Up" form a la Master Roshi rather than making everyone turn into Oozaru.
- Due to the removal of Special Technique ranks, the level 2 Martial Artist feature Practice Makes Perfect has been altered to read: "You may spend 4 MP to upgrade your Special Techniques. An Upgraded Special Technique gains +10 Accuracy and +4 Damage." If you selected this Class Feature for your level 2 Martial Artist, you may change it.
- Treasure rolls are no longer awarded from every 1000 words written in any thread. You may now primarily get them from Personal Sagas, though some Missions/Bounties/Events may award treasure rolls in addition to their other rewards.
- Training Gear and Expert Training Gear have had their descriptions updated to read more accurately and they now have a new limit on their effect "Limit: May only apply this bonus in Spars, Battles, Bounties, and Events wherein combat has taken place."
None of these will be editted into the rules effectively until tomorrow, likely.
