The battle would be over soon, she knew it. Though she had connected many of her strikes, she felt that she could not sustain this level of attack. There was something strange about her opponents' techniques and the way her fought, some sort of power fueling him that she couldn't explain. She couldn't get a real read of him, and yet she felt that despite his weak aura, he had incredible innate advantage. The smoke of the blasts began to dissipate and, for the first time, she could see that her opponent had not been left unscathed. He replied with another red orb, more of a distraction, but she couldn't afford to take another hit. She flashed out of existence, appearing in a space near where she had been, and flung an orb of her own in reply. She was feeling drained, and she knew that he meant to end the fight soon. She braced herself for the possibility of an all out offensive, clenching her fists and willing the ki back into her body. She had to be ready for this. "I'm not done yet!" she muttered, more to herself than an actual proclamation of defiance to Atalan. The words motivated her to keep pushing. She couldn't give up yet.

Atalan winced and stumbled a bit as the girl flickered out of the path of his distracting shot and landed a solid blow to his chest. Pain seared him and his face became taught with a rictus of a smile pasted to his face. He reached again deep within the reserves of his power and called more up, red light flared into being around him again and his pupils expanded while a trickle of blood leaked from his nose. "You're more than you seem peasant, I applaud your dedication. It's time to end this though, I have things to do later today. Fare thee well, hope we don't meet again soon." His left hand flicked up and traced the familiar set of blue runes that swirled into a portal. With the other h e rubbed a little of the blood from his face onto his finger and then quickly drew the runes which seemed to glow fiercer for the presence of their creator's blood. No matter what she willed for, however, she knew the battle was over. Her opponents hair wafted in the air as more power was drawn towards him and, in this moment, she had to calculate her exit strategy. She could see the runes etch themselves in the air around him, the intensity and fervor of which was not lost onto her. She would not avoid these hits. She closed her eyes and focused on her own energy; as small as it was it was still elevated and could potentially let Atalan find her, should he want to continue their battle. She had to suppress it, she had to hide. The runes began to tear reality and rip magical forces, the same as had come at her before. Her legs, however, did not feel as sluggish as they did earlier. She had time to dodge these... maybe. The concentrated force of the chill blast and its torrent of icicles sliced at her, tearing apart her clothes. She did what she could to mitigate the pain, but she couldn't withstand it. She let out one final defiant cry. There was only one thing to do. She disappeared from the center of the blasts, and from Atalan's field of view. In all his time fighting her, he had barely moved. The arrogant man perhaps didn't even have the willpower left to chase her, though there was clearly no opportunity left for her to strike. Hunkered down behind the ruins of a building, here in this desert, she analyzed her surroundings. An abandoned house stood with its door open. She quickly retreated into it, shut the door, and tucked herself deeper within it. Sometimes, she tried to convince herself, discretion was the better part of valor. She collapsed in a corner of the room, out of sight of any window or door, and nursed her wounds. Perhaps Atalan would spend himself in reckless abandon destroying this place, or perhaps he would take satisfaction in his victory and go do that thing that he had to do. Regardless, Saaya tried not to realize that her bravery had its limits. Maybe that was for the best.

Atalan stood in the middle of the street, panting slightly. His foe had disappeared from the middle of his spell and fled before him. His face eased and became a smooth unemotional mask again. Rubble crunched beneath his boots as he began to walk towards the public square's center. He stood on top of the fountain and used his magic to amplify his voice, "YOUR LITTLE HERO HAS FLED BEFORE ME AND YOU HAVE PAID THE PRICE FOR YOUR DEFIANCE. I EXPECT THE NEXT TAX I GATHER TO BE IN FULL AND ON TIME. CHOOSE YOUR LEADERS WITH MORE CARE NEXT TIME. I WILL NOT BE SO... LENIENT NEXT TIME." He voice echoed off the remaining buildings and reverberated through the area. He heard a child start to cry in the distance but ignored it. He hopped down and quickly washed his face in the fountain to remove the blood before going to reclaim his pack and cloak and started to walk out of town, unknowingly walking past his opponent's refuge on his way out. He snapped the cloak in the air, knocking the worse of the dust off and swinging back over his shoulders. All in all, it had been a fine afternoon of work. A town brought into line and their protector sent packing. He was ready for a bath, and perhaps a nap. First though, he did have something to take care of; their was an amazing pot of tea and some cake waiting for him. It had better still be hot too; he despised rewarmed tea. With such trivialities occupying his mind, he was soon out of sight of the village and headed back to his manor.
