Well, this kind of job would not be something as high as mighty as the other things he had done while he travelled with his big brother, but still...out of everything he did do so far, it seemed the thing most suitable to his particular skillset. Mizune was out and about in the small town he and Valentus had decided to remain for a few days as they travelled the northen lands. Once again, he had done all her own chores with his brother helping people so he was once again granted the liberty of strolling around the town on his own, provided that the red fox would not get himself into any kind of dangerous trouble, of course. Those predicaments wouldn't stop the half saiyan from finding out something to do though. Possibly something that could bring a little more coin into his pockets. Not to say he was struggling, quite the opposite. Valentus was more than capable of providing for the both of them, but even still Mizune felt he couldn't just keep taking from his big brother. He needed to earn something himself so he could at least let his tuffle sibling ease up a little more instead of incessantly working his butt off for the both of them.
Going about lost in his mindspace, Mizune almost missed the old man calling out for help while he was going about her stoll through town in his usual bubbly attitude. He had seen him before, first buying stuff from a visiting caravan and then selling stuff on his own to other people and tourists passing around the place. The old man was a woodworker, and from what the little the fox kid had seen he seemed quite adept at his craft. Drawing closer, Mizune listened to what the man had to say. Apparently, he had a backlog of orders to fulfill yet he couldn't do so due to a sudden shortage of wood to refine. He was missing quite alot the wood required, the next shipment of the stuff not due to arrive in a few weeks. That's where he would have any willing volunteer come in. As the old man explained it, the forests around the settlement he lived actually had naturally grown trees that could provide the specific type of wood required to make the objects in the order. The old man just needed someone who knew enought about forest and was spry enough to go in, collect a few pieces of that special wood and deliver them back to his workshop. Easy peasy! If only he knew the fox basically lived in forests most of his time as he moved around the northen lands! Gathering wood sounded much easier than hunting any kind of quarry, plus it also sounded like a nice game to keep him occupied for the day. Besides, if he himself was ever going to need the special wood the old man was rambling about again, knowing what the plant is like ahead of time would be something very useful. Perhaps if this wood was so special, he could harvest some and sell it for profit to help his big bro!
After hearing all he needed to find the plant, as well as taking a whiff of the wood's rather particular smell to better track the plant down, the red tea fox saluted the old geezer and set about to survey the locations the old guy indicated on the map he so graciously gave him. He was quite nice, he didn't really need to give Mizune the map at all. The beastman hybrid was more than capable of remembering all by heart, though the irony of his situation never failed to make itself known. Plus, his senses were super sharp and finding a tree that smelled the same as the sample he saw was going to be super easy.
Nevertheless, even if he already was super mega awesome at knowing where to go and not get lost, now he certainly wouldn't be able to get lost in the woods for any reason. It would take the half saiyan a little time to walk out of the village, only because the young beastman wasn't really rushing himself. Sure, the old man said he would need the wood the same day so that he could start work in earnest...yet the day was far from over and he could just fly back at full speed if he really needed to. The sun was still quite a way from going over the horizon as well. He would have ample time to do the deed and make sure he wasn't going to hurry back with bad wood the old guy couldn't use. He would treat it like any other of his chores, mediocrity was out of the question. Like Valentus always told him: doing things half-hassed does not help anyone.
The woods were quiet this day. There wasn't much movement around. Just the odd critter or the occasional small little bird flying to or from its nest. Mizune took a moment to just stand around silent. Most times, just waiting and listening for nature's voice was more than enough to know the ins and outs of the place he was treading in. His tabi boots would make little sound as he looked at the map and began tracking down the location of the trees he would need to harvest wood from. He was naturally nimble, used to moving silently around so that other animals wouldn't be alerted to his presenct. He wasn't hunting animals per se, but all the years of muscle memory he seemed to have after waking up from his pickle jar helped making the motions effortless. The ground was also somewhat humid, as it had rained not too long ago but not enough to render the ground beneath here muddy and slippery, making it even easier to avoid snapping twigs or other things. Walking at a steady pace, Mizune would correlate the various landmarks to the old's man map and follow his nose for the smell of the wood. From the looks of it, the old guy knew his surroundings pretty well. Following those direction on the map was straightforward and easy. He wouldn't even need to look at the thing to go back to the village.
It would take the fox around half an hour, but eventually he would spot what he believed to be the tree he needed in the distance. Raising the map up, he compared the drawing the man had given her to the actual thing and drew in close to sniff it out. Yep! The two looked pretty similar. Not only that, but he could feel the fragrance of the wood emanating from it. Hopping over to it, Mizune took out the tools he had stashed in his bag so that he could harvest four large chunks of the wood from the tree without disrupting it too much. He would try to cut off what seemed the less important branches, ending up with a sizable haul in return and leaving the tree there to eventually regrow. It was probably more than the man had asked for but hey, at least he would not run out again like he did!
The trip back was as uneventful as the trip to get the wood. He didn't even need to go that far in the first place and he was more than strong enough to carry all the wood in one go without flying, to the old man surprise. It also made for a nice workout. The young beastman would wait there until the artisan confirmed that the wood he got was indeed the right one, then he would also make sure to give him the map she was lent back. Following Valentus' advice, he would then help the man settle the wood in his workshop just the way he wanted before taking his leave for the day a little heavier with Zeni. A job well done, now he could go back to her place and relax with a heavier wallet and perhaps tell his big brohther about it.
Perhaps he could spend it on something he would enjoy.
