Though more common in the South of the planet, Tuffle bunkers, be it research, habitat, or administrative ones, were dispersed across the entire world. That's not to say that they were particularly easy to spot, and the fact that the "Imperative Sanctioned by the Last Enclave of Tuffles" was completely unknown to pretty much anyone outside of a very small circle of Pickle escapades, Tuffle defectors and their contacts was a testament to their talent. Some of these bunkers were abandoned, some were still active and had personnel waiting to fry anyone who managed to find their bunker and venture inside, but all of them almost always had at least one unfortunate soul trapped inside, subject to something so terrifying that even the most wild imagination would struggle to describe it. When he first escaped from ISLET and immersed himself into ordinary Earthling life, as a hero, Valentus did not expect to ever return to the Tuffles again. He made a decision, he was never going to feel at home in those pools of pure vengeance, so he'd rather cut all ties he had with ISLET and hope they don't ever find him and cross his path again. Meeting Mizu, the beast boy-Saiyan hybrid who escaped from one of the organization's "pickle" pods, however, changed his perspective. If he truly wants to be a hero, then he can't possibly forever ignore the plight of the people who are now trapped in the claws of his species. So, remembering an operating Tuffle science base in the highlands he was passing through during his travels, Valentus made a decision to change course, and possibly help someone. So now, warning sirens were blazing across the installation, sparks were shooting out of computers where several well placed sword strikes, predicting exactly where he needs to strike to take down the electronics he needs to take down, left their mark. Several cry-pods had their energy supply completely cut and were doing an emergency shut down as a result, two have already been torn open and their contents pushed outside. And the young Tuffle hero was running through the corridors, his hand holding onto two slightly drowsy, confused test subjects and leading them after him. The experiments using them, testing various forms of pathogens to see which would be able to destroy Saiyan cells the most efficiently, had left their hair pale and bleached, and their bodies weak. Still, Valentus tried to stay optimistic. " Don't worry, we're almost there!" (413 words, total 413) Maxine

Working with such bunkers – yes, once upon a time, she’d been the one raiding such things; albeit far in the Western Lands. It seemed long ago now. To be honest, she had no luck with such pristine ones as this, and instead had to prey upon the Golden Gate’s works, prior to the Dragoons’ ascendance. After all, she was simply incompatible with this level of technology… she was old. A mere consumer model, standing in the mud at the feet of Titan. Yes, the time of her Unid Models was well and truly over. No, in fact – it had never even had a time, had it? She was too old the day she opened her eyes. Yet, she had been summoned. Desperation, hope, or spite; she was unsure of the reasons, but she did not believe in them. So, while she dreamed of the city streets of her home, she lingered here. The cold Northern Lands were not unpleasant – but this limbo between her roles was. Sitting aboard her helicopter, she waited for orders. Dirty and faceless, waiting to heed her instructions; on her own, an invisible warrior. No longer a butler, but instead soldier. A quiet clicking was her only audible alert, and it silenced herself just as quickly. As a machine – her internals answered such calls before her audio ever could. ”It’s time. An automated signal – once again. Two, give me a course and an ETA, please.”<All business again – it’s only a click away, so there’s no time to prepare. You look rough, boss. Are you sure this is worth your time? I’m starting to assume that ISLET don’t consider you more than a rat-catcher.>”Even if that’s the case, orders are orders. I can look at my prospects in my own time. My armour’s a wreck right now, and I can’t wear my haori on this job – looks like I’m stuck with sim gear. When I return, I’ll have to make some time for repairs…”<Assuming you’re not retired?>”If it’s today or yesterday, it doesn’t matter. That’s just how it is. Tomorrow it could be you.”------------------------------- Compared to the wailing alarms, Maxine carried herself with serenity. Such things were just to spook intruders. A true threat did not announce itself so recklessly. But… she was still from the Western Lands, so she would not be much better. Fortunately, with the Dragoons’ syskey, she could link up with the facility’s network – most of it didn’t translate at all to her system, but a map and damage report was straightforward enough to shove through a shell. It didn’t take her long to slip through the maze of corridors and find her quarry. She could’ve waited in shadow and trained her first shot, certainly, but she was a representative of Duchess Rhyme first, and a security guard second. As Val turned a corner, Maxine stood on the other end of the hall; her black BDU making her impossible to miss. She bore her assault rifle, with her machine pistols at her hips; but she merely offered a bow. ”Good morning. This is private property, I am afraid. And, similarly – your current cargo is in need of specialised care, rather than being dragged out of medical equipment like so. I would recommend you stand down.”Her tone was gentle, and polite; but firm enough to sound out across the hallway. In the meantime, she evaluated her target – Earthling, it looked like. An adventurer, or the type who’d claim such a thing. It looked like – a sword on his back? Might just be equipment. Seemed to be another self-proclaimed hero, like that Saiyan… Maxine would not claim to judge ISLET’s full intentions for these bunkers, but breaking them apart like this seemed more dangerous for those inside than a proper investigation. Would they cut down life support just as easily, if they could not comprehend it? Well – it was not for a machine to judge. ”I am UN-11. I’ll be your security escort for today. If you do not surrender peacefully, then I shall use force as necessary.”The situation was extremely good for Maxine – she had a straight line to her target, and he was burdened. A gun was excellent in these conditions. However, she had few options for retreat if he could handle that much fire. Furthermore, rooms lined either side of the corridor – server stacks, it appeared, meaning plenty of cover. She’d have to pin him down here if she wanted a clean combat. She flicked the safety of her treasured rifle; a nearly inaudible click. STROBELITE may not be a minigun, or even a true weapon of war – but, it, too, understood what it meant to be old. Perhaps it was too optimistic for Valentus assume that he will be able to sneak in, punch through the cryo pods, drag some people out of the bunker and escape without anyone noticing. After a sharp turn of the corridor to the left, the Tuffle was forced to suddenly stop. His path was blocked - though, surprisingly, not by some infuriated grunt decked out in the Pomegranate armor series, but merely a woman, armed with a rifle. Even from this far away, he could tell that she was small and unassuming, an odd sight on the battlefield, and especially with assault weaponry. The ingenuity of the Tuffles meant that Valentus could not drop his guard down, however - and several theories immediately floated into his mind. Perhaps this was a super soldier of a new design which needed no armor at all to be combat ready, or perhaps an android of sorts... The woman introduced herself politely, her language mechanically workshopped and abstracted into cold legalese - "private property", "your current cargo", "medical equipment" and "your security escort" all came to mind. She introduced herself as UN-11, too - which was as good of a sign as any that he was dealing with a machine, even if most likely a sentient one. " Stand back behind me, and find cover if you can," Valentus whispered, his eyes glancing back towards the two Saiyan test subjects for just a second as he let go of them. They were still too dizzy, recovering from the lingering effects of their stasis, to speak more than a few worried grunts and glare at UN-11 with fear, but they understood the order. Though the corridor was tight and narrow, there were rooms lining up on either side, which they could use to get out of the firing range. Valentus made a note of them, too, especially as he will likely have to run straight into bullet fire otherwise, but kept up his cautious optimism. Perhaps it is possible for them to not come to blows. Since he was deep in ISLET territory, Valentus did not bother with hiding his full identity. Even if UN-11 did not recognize him, someone will eventually do regardless. " I am Valentus, of the princely House of Nectarine - and these two people are nobody's property." In spite of the weapon about to be pointed at him, the Tuffle stood straight and stern, unabated by the woman's threat. If he came here for the good of others, then it only falls to him to fight for that good, as well. " I don't want to fight you, miss. I only want to set these people free, and if you believe in that as well, then we can move on and pretend we never met each other. But if that's not an option... then I won't surrender peacefully." The Tuffle's hand was hovering by the grip of his blade - he wasn't sure whether he will have to make the first strike, but he was ready for anything, especially if it involved needing to draw his weapon and charge in a moment's notice. Ever since their house was established by Asbolus Nectarine, the Nectarine lineage were renown as capable swordfighters. Even as centuries passed, the technological level of the Tuffles advanced far past the medieval era and the steel sword was replaced by rifles, blasters, and even when it came to melee weapons, plasma and vibroblade weaponry, the Nectarine house continued clinging onto traditions, and all of their scions would receive at least some training in handling a melee weapon during their childhood. At the bare minimum, it was something to keep the youths occupied with and make sure they stay in shape during their formative years. And as it turned out in the case of their final member, Valentus, the Nectarine Sword Art proved still adequate during the high octane action of the Saiyan War - after all, the soldier and future Sergeant was renown for being able to take on Saiyans in melee, and winning. In spite of being so, so much weaker than even a low level Saiyan. The perfect battle for a member of the House of Nectarine is one where the opponent has no time to throw a single strike. Speed, consistent momentum, and pin point accuracy even in the midst of this movement were all crucial to their swordfighting. You charge, and attack, and attack, all while leaving your opponent confused on where you are, much less where you will strike next. Asbolus Nectarine fought against heavy armored knights, Valentus Nectarine fought against Saiyans much larger and tougher than him, and in both cases, they pulled through. The battle today was going to be rather different, though. His opponent was smaller than him, and the battlefield was tight, with little room for maneuver. Reflex and mobility based tactics were at a disadvantage. However, Valentus still remained cautiously optimistic. After all, he only really needs to make the distance, and the rest can be figured out on the fly. With a slight touch upon the handle, Valentus's sword began getting ready for battle as well, its blade activating a module to make his slash marks even more dangerous than before, by coating them in corrosive acid. The Tuffle himself, meanwhile, waited for a response. (365 words, total 1291) BATTLE TRACKER{ACTIONS} Defensive Phase

Princely house of Nectarine… no, that didn’t match up to any of her records on the Western Lands’ duchies. Must be from some other place. But no matter his position, this wasn’t about to be excused. She’d let him hustle his kidnapping victims aside – she didn’t particularly want to peg them herself – but, she definitely wasn’t going to offer a free pass. ”Dragging people out of medical equipment without permission or procedure seems like a poor course of action to ‘set people free’. My orders are simply to maintain this complex’s security until it can be properly processed. It would seem that violence is our only recourse.”As she noticed, his weapon was a sword. It looked like a fine design, but woefully outdated against any gun. His insistence on standing back made her a little more cautious – maybe he had a trick up his sleeve? She didn’t overlook him activated some sort of caustic module… unpleasant, but she didn’t really plan on getting cut up in the first place. It looked like his foundations were solid, though; not some reckless rookie. This could be quite messy. But, this wasn’t the time to consider other options – that could come later. Her equipment wasn’t in pristine shape, but she wasn’t that out-of-order either. Streamlining her processes into the proper channels for combat, she refined herself; and her core revved up in anticipation for combat. It wasn’t any kind of burst of ki, but the difference might be noticeable for someone so on guard. Similarly, she activated her personal dampening field, with the sound of a faint mechanical clicking… however, beyond the ki briefly involved, it was difficult to tell she’d done much at all. She was a consumer model, after all… a bodyguard waving around a giant energy shield all the time would just be too obvious in Oolong. The android levelled her rifle – the weapon was obviously an assault rifle, but its tactical rails were decked out with all kinds of attachments. Underslung launcher, red-dot scope, CQB barrel, LAM, angled iron sights – it was hard to say if it looked professional or try-hard. ”I’ll allow you one last chance, as per courtesy. Yield – or, please close the distance. I would not wish to miss.”[376/1165] ---------------- BATTLE TRACKERPREPARATION PHASEBonus Action 1: Barrier Barrier – Rank 1Action: Bonus Action Effect: You gain 15 Temporary HP and are immune to status effects inflicted by attacks. Once again, Valentus' optimism turned out to be rather foolish. UN-11 made no moves to step back and prevent the engagement - instead, in her mechanical politeness, the android announced that for violating medical procedure before their subjects can be properly "processed", she can only answer with violence. So, she raised her rifle and began getting ready for battle as well. The mechanical nature of his opponent meant that noticing her preparedness and the mechanisms she activated in anticipation of the Tuffle's attack was no easy feat - Valentus had an eye for even the smallest movements, however, and so, as he drew his blade from its sheath, he caught note of the energy concentrating around his opponent's body. A barrier of sorts, or perhaps a repulsive force field. Valentus was no machine, of course, but he had enough imagination to assume what he's dealing with - and plan to respond appropriately. Finally, one last ultimatum came. Surrender, or attack. At this point, there was no reason to wait and let her take the first shot. She is going to shoot anyway. " If so... then I am sorry for this in advance." Valentus' right foot pressed on the floor, its pressure bending the metal beneath it, before it suddenly pushed him forward, propelling the Tuffle swordsman across the corridor. To make up for the tightness of the battlefield, Valentus hopped from wall to wall in his charge, pushing himself off with one foot and lunging forward while still keeping his trajectory not a mere straight line. Until finally, he threw himself straight at the android. " Haaaah!" Valentus yelled in a fit of pure determination as he descended the blade at the gap between UN-11's eyes - then, after landing on his feet, he swung again, this time with a wide horizontal arc. H-He was fast. No, he was like lightning ---! That apology was definitely not enough for this. Maxine’s reckless retreat left sparks on the floor, and violet hairs glittering under the fluorescent lights. She just barely avoid the chop – and then a swing! The android was forced to outright duck to the intruder’s side to save herself, even after putting a little distance between them. S-She definitely couldn’t keep up such a defence… she could feel her pseudo-muscles whining in response to the sudden intensity. In spite of the dire situation, she paused for a moment to comprehend how close it’d come… and, the fact that in spite of all those soft words, he was absolutely striking to kill. You didn’t ‘less-than-lethally’ do a flying chop with a sword! Fine with her. She didn’t like killing, but a gun was a gun. She wouldn’t restrain them. There was a clatter of metal on metal as Maxine made her first move – but she didn’t raise her gun at all. Instead, a grenade tumbled across the steel flooring, rolling back towards the direction where Val had come from – and the same direction Maxine then fled in. Using a stun grenade in such close-quarters was a gamble, but she hoped it’d make him reconsider closing the distance again. He’d have to lose his sight if he wanted to keep an eye on her back. She wasn’t nearly as fanciful or acrobatic as the boy – Maxine was a professional, not a circus performer! She merely sprinted, and rounded the nearest server room door for cover. It was unlikely he’d lose her within such a short time, but… it might make him reconsider his approach. In the meantime, she recuperated some of her power, and further prepared herself for more trouble – it seemed like she’d have to take this much more seriously than she would have liked. But, she wasn’t on the ropes by any stretch. She hadn’t even fired a shot yet… suppression was all well and good, but she preferred to wait until the right moment. The initial sword swings clearly caught UN-11 off guard, and before she could even open fire on the young Tuffle swordsman, she was forced to back away, narrowly dodging both of the swings and starting to gain some distance. Even if he had not landed any good hits yet, Valentus was satisfied with the start of the battle - he maintained momentum, and his opponent was unable to answer with the same. The Tuffle raised his sword, ready to block any attacks coming his way before he could go on the offensive again - instead of bullets, however, he was faced with a flashbang tossed at their feet. He began raising his hand on instinct, but by then, it was already too late - a powerful flash of light and a stunning rupture of sound rolled across the corridor and overloaded his senses. The Tuffle remained on guard, however - in spite of the sudden blindness, he retained inner focus and remained on his feet, holding his weapon straight. In a moment of weakness, the android could attack him at any moment. Thus, Valentus opted to charge again, and not give her the opportunity. All he had to go off was the last moment he saw of her before the flashbang hit, backing away from him and throwing the grenade. As the initial impact of the bang receded, and his sense of hearing recovered before his sight, he had another thing to go off - the sound of footsteps, banging across the metallic floor and moving away from him. It was a long shot, and without a good sense of where he was heading, he was unlikely to actually land an attack... but he can work with this limited information. Valentus charged with determination again, following after where he heard the android woman step back, and go around a corner to a neighbouring room. He opened with a powerful jab towards where he expected the gut to be - then, with his sword wielding hand, swung a downwards slash. (333 words, total 1922) BATTLE TRACKER{ACTIONS}Defensive Phase

The flashbang appeared successful – but alas, it really wasn’t enough. Nowadays, everyone has ki senses or just sensors. She was just too old. Her ways were out of fashion. Even this kid could keep up, huh? Still, she’d bought herself a little breathing room, so --- Not so – she’d barely managed to change to her hot-shot battery before he was upon her again. His jab was wide, and hit above its target; most likely more due to her height than his accuracy… but, that was even worse for Maxine. Contrary to popular belief, her core wasn’t in her head – it was in her upper chest, which happened to be just the right target for one of the hardest bones in any Earthling’s body. She could only grimace as her barrier took the blow… if she’d taken that full-on, she’d probably end up on the floor. Frankly – it was more dangerous than that sword. Oh, speaking of which. It came next, and while she was still certainly on the defensive. She’d held her ground – and that proved to be a mistake. The blade staggered along its path as it glided through her shoulder, as Maxine stepped back to defend herself; the metal being sliced quite cleanly by the blow. And worse, it came with an extra present… that caustic fluid was not welcomed by Maxine’s system. As an entirely synthetic android, most might assume she’d be totally immune to poisons – not so. Thanks to Unid’s use of synthetic organs, such venoms were still effective on her circulatory system; fake as it might be. She wasn’t about to be hurt by neurotoxins, sure, but it was still closer to tissue than metal. It was a poor show on her part so far. Things were looking quite bad. Was she really that old? Retirement seemed awfully close all of a sudden. Ah, she really didn’t want to go like this, though. She’d always dreamed of a bittersweet end on the field; not one spent in the name of a shady organisation against a kid with nary a dream. But, she’d spent enough of her recent years on regrets. Now was a time for action. Letting herself be blown down by the cut, she’d jump a few steps back – and bring her rifle to bear. She’d taken a hit, but she’d completed her primary goal… swapping her usual battery for her nastier one. The Mk 26 HAMR was known for overheating when handling newer batteries, but her customisation and careful finger let it chew on them for just a little longer. She’d had enough of that sword already – time to see if Sir Nectarine had a healthy appreciation for firearms. Your usual Blaster Carbine made a nice purr when it shot; subtle and clean. Pushed to its limit, the HAMR snarled instead; muzzle flash lighting up the darkened server room – as well as Maxine’s bitter glare. She didn’t lay off on the trigger at this range, either; not even bothering with the red-dot as she poured laser fire in the boy’s direction. STROBELITE did not disappoint, as the server room crackled and hiss with every shot that didn’t miss its mark – and most likely did more than put on a show for every one that did. Finally, the weapon’s receiver popped open, hissing and steaming – finally, it would have to take a break… Maxine would not. Lunging to the side, she’d duck amongst the lines of server racks and open fire again – blindfire around every corner, now wielding one of the machine pistols that’d been at her sides. A small boxy design made its age and low budget clear, and its accuracy was considerably more abysmal than her rifle; but the Type-950 was still well-known in Oolong City’s streets for a reason. The suppression ought to be irritating enough. Yet, as Maxine vanished in the shadows and the field cleared of fire – she was upon him once more, rounding on him from the other side. Rifle on its sling, machine pistols in their hip holsters… was she seriously considering martial arts? No, a hand darted to her chest, and drew a final weapon. A blued finish, an ergo grip, and a smoothed cylinder… it was a collector’s item, not a mere gun. And, not to mention – it didn’t seem like it was a laser at all. With a roar unlike the laser fire from before, she fired three shots from the Snake Way Ergal Magnum, drawing and firing with practiced ease. Yes, well. Maybe, if the results this time matched the last, perhaps she was not so old after all. ”Once more?”[769/2278] ---------------- BATTLE TRACKER{Spoiler} DEFENSIVE PHASEValentus, Necatrine Crusader Attack 1: Strike Critical > 50 = Critical Hit (8 + 5) – 5 = 8 Poison blocked by Barrier Attack 2: Strike 63 > 50 = Hit 13 – 0 = 13 THP depleted, Barrier destroyed Poisoned (3 turns) Total Damage = 21 + 3 (Poison) OFFENSIVE PHASEBonus Action: Focus Energy +15 Accuracy with Energy Attacks for this turn. Valentus could not yet see the impact of his actions, but the feeling of having struck something which recoiled from his elbow, and then hearing the sound of metal and wire being cut by the blade of his sword, both told him that his guesswork was correct. The Tuffle even allowed himself the luxury of a satisfied smile - unfortunately, he could not rest on his laurels for long. Engaging at close range meant that when UN-11 finally opened fire, she could do so safely - and, as the Tuffle was still blinded by the flashbang, the first laser blasts struck. His armor took the onslaught, but it bent and faintly melted from the impact, and transferred their kinetic energy to the softer body below. A ringing pain immediately rushed across Valentus - no bones were broken yet, nor did any of the lasers pierce through, but he could not discount some internal bleeding, and the pain of the impact itself was quite debilitating on its own. Nothing he could not force himself through, however. Even his fragile, dead, Saiyan War era self could run across the battlefield with a bullet lodged between his ribs - and he's been enhanced to become a super-weapon since. Valentus' limbs moved on instinct, working in tandem with the slowly recovering sight and hearing to block the rest of the laser blasts. The blade of his sword moved faster across the air in front of him than the untrained eye could track, deflecting them and swatting them to the side. Once the assault rifle clicked and hissed, UN-11 moved on to a machine pistol - and once again, the Tuffle put his antique weapon against it, ending up spinning the weapon in circles as he slowly advanced to leave himself safe. The final weapon thrown at him was an old fashion revolver - Valentus ducked to the side to dodge the first and second shot, and smacked the third one with his sword, the bullet falling to the metallic floor. For a second, a silence set across the battlefield. The Tuffle's breaths were faster now, and a narrow, barely visible aura bubbled to life around him - instinctively, he began to replicate the barrier with which his android opponent defended herself against his attacks. " ...Are you going to listen to reason now?" Valentus spoke again, and raised his sword. The corrosive agent which had coated its blade was no longer active, the weapon unable to maintain the module for long - instead, it glimmered brightly in the dim light of the corridor. " Or are you still just blindly following orders?" (428 words, total 2350) BATTLE TRACKER{ACTIONS}Defensive Phase

It was a fine show – but, it deeply irritated Maxine. Her attacks had been faulty, and she was being showed up by a sword of all things. Being beaten by a gunman, she could live with; but a sword? Those archaic things were so ugly. It wasn’t even a katana! But, that was probably for the best… Hatsuka had run her through with her obscene blade more times than Maxine would care to remember. Regardless, this was just a temporary setback… she had plenty more up her sleeve. That was the benefit of guns, wasn’t it? She already brought more magazines. As Valentus hesitated, the android was rather nonplussed. ”I’m a machine. The entire purpose is to blindly follow orders, isn’t it? Or do you expect your toaster to leave for a new job?” replied Maxine wryly, dropping her professional demeanour for the moment – in the face of such a stupid question, she could not help herself. A-And, she wouldn’t admit it, but she’d had that retort up her sleeve for weeks now. She’d been saving it for next time Koma tried to tell her about sentience, but… this would just fine. ”I do not think someone who can come rushing in and wrecked things with his sword is in a good position to discuss matters of ‘reason’, either. If you wish to parley, then I would recommend knocking before entering in the future.”She paused, moving to holster her revolver – an act of submission, maybe? She was just chatting, after all. ”However, you do claim to be a noble, and as a representative of the Duchies, I respect that authority. So, as per your request – once more.”She did holster her gun – but that wasn’t the only thing attached to her chest rig. A familiar metal clatter, and another flashbang fell to the floor between them… it was a gamble to rely on the same trick twice, but one could not fault a system that worked. At least – she felt a little more lucky this time. She didn’t have a sword in her face this time… though, that venom was still making her skin crawl and organs shudder. She might need to swap to some of her redundancies if it kept burning away. Such an inconvenience! She wasn’t about to release the pressure this time, though. She pulled her rifle from his sling as she hopped back, taking a hold of a device strapped to its grip – it looked like some sort of aiming module, but with nothing to aim? She tapped the button on it… and the air filled with shrapnel. Micro-detonator ammunition was considered fairly uncouth and out of trend right now, but with a foe like this – such tricks were a necessity. All those sword flourishes had left plenty of detonators littered around Sir Nectarine’s feet, which would immediately prove quite unpleasant. It wasn’t like having a grenade go off in your face, but it was a bit like standing directly on a claymore mine in his current situation – not fun, and not particularly good for your complexion either. And that just wasn’t enough – even if Maxine’s accuracy was unimpressive compared to her target’s agility and finesse, her tenacity could perhaps be admired. As the flashbang went off, she covered her retreat with a burst of fire from her assault rifle. No hotshot pack this time, so the heat wasn’t so impressive, but it also meant the accuracy wasn’t quite so mired either. Well… as far as covering fire went, anyway. UN-11's rebuttal was surprisingly self deprecating, and though Valentus had gotten used to her cold and mechanical responses, it still left him surprised. How often do you get to meet someone who denies their own sentience? As expected, however, the android was not interested in standing down - and in fact, she accused him of arguing on thin ice, his act of barging in to someone else's private property erasing any grounds he had to appeal to reason. Fine. If that means he will have to beat her to a pulp more until she finally changes her mind, then he shall - though Valentus reasoned to be less deadly with his strikes for now. The android's retaliation came with a powerful combination, one which the Tuffle could not prepare in advance. In a matter of seconds, UN-11 assaulted him with two means at once - a flashbang was tossed at his feet again, and before Valentus could turn away from it this time, the very ground underneath his feet detonated, the rounds and charges which dropped underneath him after his spirited sword defense now exploding under their user's command. Blinded and caught off guard, he could only cross his arms and endure the assault, the aura around his body wavering and finally breaking as a result. He faintly hissed, breathing through his teeth, and, with a grunt, he lifted his sword forward. UN-11 was not yet done, opening fire with her assault rifle into the flood of shrapnel and light - Valentus once again tracked the sound and spun his sword to block and deflect the covering fire. As soon as the assault receded, the Tuffle's voice sounded again, unabated by everything thrown at him: " A toaster won't shoot back at me with snark. A toaster won't flee when the odds are against it, or grow desperate as the battle goes. You're not merely sentient and alive - you're more alive than the average Tuffle." Those clones stuffed into massive metallic suits, blandly listening to orders and unwavering no matter the odds - those are the real robots, even if nominally alive. Pressing one foot down to push himself forward, Val lunged across the battlefield yet again, though without a spirited yell this time. His first move was to throw a punch as powerful as he could muster straight at UN-11's solar plexus - or where a human her size would have one, at least. Whether or not he landed the attack, after withdrawing his fist, the Tuffle would briefly spin the sword in his hand until it pointed its pommel forward, then smash that butt end of the sword at the android's face. " But by all means, blindly follow what you're told. I'm sorry that it's my people you have to serve, though. I still don't want to fight you." Such strange complaints. Maxine hated this sort of talk. She was a machine – that fact could not be denied, no matter the philosophy. She didn’t bleed blood, she was not born, and she had no heart. She was not even a proper facsimile, nor did any divine or magical blessing – as much as she loathed to consider such things – fall upon her shoulders to uplift her. She was not a magical sword, she had no history, she claimed only the identity she was given… she might do more than a toaster, certainly, and required more improvisational skills, but the fact remained: she was built to serve a purpose, not to live. And, truly, she was glad for it. She was given purpose. It was a gift many never obtained. ”You seem to be making many assumptions… if retreat means I can offer my services again rather than wasting them in a scrapheap, then that’d be the proper course of action. When the odds shift, then strategy must too – test first, then capitalise on doubt. They’re entirely normal options for a machine… what isn’t so logical is wasting your breath arguing with a machine when you have a gun to your head.”Oh, bold words – but they were followed by a less elegant show, as Maxine gave an unpleasant mix of a wheeze and the scraping of metal as she was hit by that gut punch. Thankfully, it was lower than her core this time, but… deeply unpleasant. Her frame was sturdy, in spite of her appearance, but it was more because she could simply keep fighting no matter the damage unlike organic or even cyborg beings. Alas, while she could handle such a blow to her chest well, the follow-up was not so well-handled. The pommel strike was a crushing one – Maxine had angled herself up to recover from the blow, and that’d just offered more resistance to the attack. The damage was rather obscene, simply smashing apart half of the android’s face. On a human, the damage would no doubt look obscene; with half of the jaw shattered… but, now her mask of humanity was shredded, revealing the cold metal within. It was perhaps a little unsettling to see beneath, and see how her form mimicked a person. The jawline and skin coating was similar to actual Earthling physiology, but it was a pale imitation. The jaw was wrecked, yet she still spoke so easily… it was like a parody of life. It hurt, too. Intensely. It was a severe wound. In earlier days, she might have screamed. But – she’d been through worse. ”Does this make you more comfortable?” remarked the android blithely, white circulatory fluid dripping down from her open wound, while metal shrapnel littered the ground at her feet. ”ISLET is merely the most convenient option for my superiors… but, business is business. In this world, it’s kill or be killed. I do not find any pleasure in this pain, but a machine’s blood is a small price to pay in return for my Duchess.”She’d pause, assuming she could get away with it while the boy was being so tender. ”How about you, boy? You, too – are just following what you’ve been told. There’s no more heroes. Freedom is a limited resource. The whole world of choice for you, just means there is less for me.” Once more – she opened fire. She did not bother making distance this time, instead using her lowered stance from her pain as an opportunity to rise up with her machine pistols in hand; firing the whole while. At this range, it was a better bet; and ideally it’d be too awkward for him to use his sword as shield without the extra room to predict her trajectory. She’d only move closer after that, swinging STROBELITE’s stock like a club to try and force her foe to give her room to aim and fire; exchanging the battery with her other hand. The gun hissed and spat in disgust, but it soon roared all the same – and she was not so easy on the trigger this time. But eventually it once more overheated, and there was a moment’s pause. Inevitably, though, the chorus came – that beloved revolver swung forward. With piercing eyes, she pulled the trigger – once, twice, thrice; before finally ending the assault… this time, pushing through and past her target; attempting to make new distance while Valentus recovered. And as she did, there was a glint of violet… she placed a hand on her rifle’s detonator switch again, while offering a tiny wink over her shoulder. Valentus did not have much time to dwell on UN-11's response, refuting his attempt to reason her sentience - she had internalized it, and still could not let go of describing herself as a mere machine. Soon, all words had to be dropped, and the Tuffle's blows landed one after another, smashing the android first in her gut and then across her face, where the sheer striking power of the pommel, coupled with superhuman force, punched through her Earthling-like skin. There was no tissue underneath, just machinery. It did not even try to imitate Earthling body structure - the jaw was broken, and yet she was able to speak like nothing happened. Gruesome. Valentus took a brief gulp. It was not going to abate his zeal - he's seen people, even people close to him, get ripped, shredded and flattened, and compared to that fill of body horror from the Saiyan War days, this was a mere blimp. It did mean that there was a new dimension to her machine argument, however. Staring at the Tuffle swordsman as internal fluid dripped from the exposed machinery, UN-11 continued, and delved into her view of the world, a pessimistic one. It was a life of servitude to one piece of the hierarchy or another, where heroes no longer exist, might makes right, one person's freedom means the subjugation of others, and you either kill or be killed. Valentus could tell that she still clung to something to give her solace in such an uncertain present - her "Duchess", whom the android mentioned, and who was someone she was certain she could sacrifice her life to, and have it be worth it. What their relationship was, whether this "Duchess" was a Tuffle or an Earthling, or whether they were even alive was all still a mystery. A massive barrage with her machine pistols began, flooding the corridor with shots. Once again, Valentus was forced back, and this time, the duel handed weapon not only caught him in surprise, but also imprinted some lasting damage. Several of the shots pierced through his armor and embedded themselves into his skin, forcing blood to spray out and trickle down his body, all while forcing the Tuffle backwards. Had it not been for him immediately springing to action and spinning his sword to deflect, he was certain that he would have suffered a lot more. Thankfully, in comparison, the old fashion revolver was easier to deal with. The first bullet and the second whizzed by as Valentus ducked to the side, and the third got caught by his hand, and fell to the floor after getting crushed between his fingers. The Tuffle released a much harder breath. He was now bloodied and his body was crying for him to finish this soon - there was only so far he could push with sheer grit. Another barrage like that and he might not rise back up to his feet. There wasn't much of a point in arguing morality with UN-11, she clearly did not believe in that, and will merely respond to him with the usual monotone. A bullet which got stuck to Valentus's shoulder fell out, flattened by the impact, just as the Tuffle then answered: " The world does not revolve around your experience. Just because you cannot imagine a world without servitude, without bloodshed, without heroes, does not mean that it is truly how the world works. The Tuffles see the world your way. I used to see the world your way. I was intended to be a servant, just like you - of flesh, not of metal, sure, but just as much of a "toaster" in the end." Valentus lowered his sword somewhat, ready to charge. " And you can cling onto what you believe, if you want. But if so, then of the two of us, only one has the capacity to make the world a better place. The other will wither and die past its shelf life, forgotten by its master the moment it stops being useful, leaving no impact on the world. Even less than a toaster. At least a toaster won't put two innocent people back in torture pods." Harsh, perhaps. Valentus rushed forward again, not as much in breakneck speed as before, and attacked again - first by sending the back of his left fist towards the exposed part of UN-11's face, before thrusting the sword held in his right, aiming to pierce through the android's abdomen. Her gunfire was once again a rather poor showing – and she had few excuses. Maybe he was just skilled. Or, more likely, she was truly out of date. After all – he certainly agreed, didn’t he? ”---Yes. Well – my master can no longer forget me, you see…” remarked Maxine, her cool demeanour eroding just a little as she glanced away; a wave of melancholy washing over her. ”Rather – I cannot risk forgetting her. You’re still making many poor assumptions… and, you’re still trying to argue with a machine. I don’t see a point in correcting a blind man on the colours he claims to see. I guess that makes just one of us.”Flicking her revolver’s cylinder out, Maxine let the casings trickle out before shoving in a speed-loader – practiced movements, that matched Valentus angling his sword… well, just with a lot more work involved. She glanced to the other side of the hallway – maybe those things had already run, while they had the chance? She would personally rather than put them down. It wasn’t a matter of morality, but… she just didn’t enjoy killing. ”I don’t really hold any responsibility over those individuals… whereas perhaps the one who destroyed any hint of their life support is feeling a little guilty, and a little more responsible? I think disappearing quietly from this world is better than becoming entranced in your own words… but, it is what it is.”The punch – didn’t hurt, this time. She could only feel the impact, no real sense of pain. Her head lolled from the momentum, but she was fairly nonplussed. She was certain there was further damage dealt, but… the lack of a pain response made it much easier to overlook. The sword was more of an issue, though without so much distraction Maxine’s defence was much more elegant – she couldn’t avoid the thrust, but instead caught it in her elbow – through her elbow, specifically – and shoved the blade away from herself that way. It hurt, certainly, and further fluid dripped out of her arm now… and it left her other arm free to open fire once again. Her revolver was still in her hands, so it was the most convenient opening; but she instead hooked her arm around her sling and hit her detonator – a second volley of shrapnel fired out behind Valentus. Less concentrated this time, but also at his exposed back... and in the meantime, she was bringing her sidearm to bear. Crossing over her other arm, she fired three more shots before throwing her injured arm down – hopefully disconnecting the sword if Val hadn’t already, but… she could improvise. With her other arm in play, she holstered her revolver just as she drew her machine pistol – another spray of wild fire. Even at this range it was messy, and even more so given her injury. But after that, she would hop back once again, pulling around her rifle and taking more calculated shots with both hands. She hunkered low to stabilise herself, and make up for her injuries; aiming for centre mass – with a little time to put him in the crossairs, she could appreciate that the boy was injured too. Laser fire was usually a clean business… but, her weapons were so overequipped that it was hard to compare them to civilian gear anymore. The blessings of the Shinobu’s budget. Or, rather, paychecks. ”With those injuries, you won’t get far in the snow. Do you have an escape plan? If you were to run now, you’d probably be able to rendezvous… any further damage, and you will likely be too crippled to survive the weather.” mused the machine, giving such scolding even while pulling the trigger; ”Technically, I’ll have no jurisdiction over you if you flee. Of course – if we met again, I’d surely have to kill you, but my exact orders were not so constrained. Ah, but, you’re not a servant, are you? I wonder if bleeding out on this tiled floor will change the world?” …Mm, but, she was bluffing a bit. That was her last hot-shot pack for STROBLITE, and her machine pistols were literally landfill instead of just being nicknamed after it. It was going to get a little more tight from here on.
