the clack of Misaki's well-worn leather soles accompanied the gardener as she opened the door gently for Maxine. She was certain the Butler was used to opening doors for herself, at this point, but she was not interested in having doors opened for her at this moment, nor was maxine, at this moment, a butler. This visit was a strange one for Misaki - Maxine tended to keep herself rather detached, which was no crime in Misaki's eyes, but the mutual level of social awkwardness made taking feel rather... difficult to accomplish without it being a difficult task.
Inwardly, Misaki was desperately hoping to get through these conversations without seeming like a robot, or a dragon, or with another police visit because a neighbor 'felt threatened' by her tone or words. The Zen Teahouse was a place she respected, with people she respected, but respect didn't immediately transfer to people skills!
Still, her inner turmoil showed not a bit on her face, as she showed her treasure, and the pride that bloomed on her face was one of true confidence as the door opened and maxine could see, from a side passage, the work she had amassed.
Perfectly trimmed hedges sat next to beautiful beds of flowers, an arrangement in this section of purples, reds, whites, and pinks, all made to flourish. Not a piece of the garden was left unattended to, with even the grass around the flowerbeds looking well-groomed. From this side of the service tunnel, Maxine could also see the pumps and sprinklers cleverly hidden behind bushes and wooden sculptures, the mechanical aspects of the garden present but oh-so-very hidden.
"you'll have to excuse the smell, Miss Maxine. We've just implemented a new form of composting. according to my surveys, it helps with growth and temperature resilience, and as of the new year it's all the horticultural rage, as it were. I've yet, however, to figure out a way to painlessly mask the smell when it's newly laid." Misaki would admit. "...Though I'll confess, I've no idea if you can smell, or if it has the same effects on a machine of your model."
Misaki took a very slight intake of breath on that point, taking a moment before adding.
"...I also do not know if I should refrain from referring to you as such. If I have misstepped, you've my apologies."

While Misaki may have found the situation to be awkward or tense, Maxine felt the complete opposite – these were the conditions in which she felt most at ease. Professional, straightforward, no questions asked. Despite the demon’s internal hang-ups, her approach was actually getting quite the positive reception. Thankfully, coming from her particular way of life, it wasn’t likely that Maxine would consider calling the police; she knew a few people who had proclaimed themselves to be ‘like dragons’; and… well, Misaki needn’t worry about seeming like a machine. It was very hard to top Maxine in that field.
But, admittedly, her role might become a bit harder – while Maxine was noticeably a little unused to having doors opened for her rather than the other way around, she’d become much harder to deal with when the matter of gardening showed up. She didn’t nod, she didn’t smirk, she didn’t chime in with questions – Misaki’s passion simply wasn’t conveyed to her. Or, rather, Maxine was simply incapable of receiving it. To her, gardening was just a job. She liked the peace and quiet, and the colours could be pleasing, but that was as far as it got. Horticulture was a profession, not a passion.
Yet, no doubt she’d argue the complete opposite if firearms came up…
”It’s an efficient design. There’s very little crossover between the sprinkler angles, and the wooden decking and sculptures help diffuse the heat. Even the height of the grass is intentional, isn’t it? It’s a little shorter on the edging than the rest of it, to offer an illusion of texture and uniformity.”
It was an honest compliment, but probably not the kind Misaki was truly hoping to hear. But, while Maxine did have a sense of aesthetics, her preferences were for practical and modern design rather than gardening. And, even if she did have feelings for flowers… she wouldn’t know how to put them into words. So, as usual, she hid behind her work. ”I must admit, I only have a little experience with composting. While I’ve usually only worked on smaller gardens, the owners didn’t like to put up with such things; so all fertilising had to be very fast acting and any watering had to be done by hand rather than any reticulation.”
She was silent as Misaki awkwardly tried to bridge the gap between them – the demon’s humility and honestly to reaching out to her left Maxine on the back foot. She was used to being treated either as a tool or as just another person, so this step to understand her was unfamiliar to her… but, not unwelcome. Finally, her stoic demeanour broke, and the short android looked away meekly, suddenly bashful. ”I can interpret the chemical signals in a way that communicates odour, but I don’t have to put up with it constantly like living things. It’s sort of like – I only smell when I need to. Though, whether what I sense is really the same thing… I don’t know.”
She paused, clearly hoping the conversation would move on, but then interjecting anyway. ”I – I appreciate it, actually. This may sound strange compared to cyborgs, but as a purely synthetic android… I don’t think I should be compared to earthlings or demons too much. I am a machine, so being called a model is something I can easily understand. Whereas, I don’t always keep up when people talk about matters of the heart or mind…” Explaining herself so shyly, it was obvious Maxine wasn’t used to saying it, but had spent a long time thinking about it. In a way – although it was embarrassing, it felt reassuring to say it aloud.
”…but, those matters aren’t important. I was created to serve, so I do not let any such discomforts interrupt my work. Your hospitality is wasted on a machine, so do whatever is easiest for yourself, Kazamiya-sama.” And, once again, Maxine hid behind her work; realising how vulnerable she’d been for just a second. It wasn’t right. It was unprofessional. ”If I might ask about the garden, though – some of the other residences I’ve worked at changed many of the species being presented to fit the seasons; since so many flower at different times of year. Do you do the same here, or do you keep them all-year? Some of them even exchanged trees, to maintain… well, ‘the magic’, or so I was told.”

Despite everything, the Gardener simply nodded, taking her cybernetic counterpart's word to heart without seeming to take in a single piece of offense. As she mentioned her own experiences on garening, Misaki paused, thinking on the second statement for a moment, before replying.
"That's quite normal." Misaki would finally say. "None of what a human may sense with their nose is the same thing, either. Genetic differences make us quite strange to one another... some more than others." The Gardenerr would state, before moving into a hum.
As Maxine continued on with her statements, Misaki's eyebrow would quirk. "Is that so? I'm surprised on why you would think that. Would you enlighten me as to why being a machine might define that?" The Gardener would ask simply, looking and nodding to a nearby attendant as she moved. "If it was a matter of not understanding the heart or mind, should I, too, not be compared to earthlings or demons?"
"R-right!" The Worker stammered, before running off, Misaki turning away rather quickly and back to her quest, as the two continued walking, finding their way through a walkway with Hosta on either side framing a brilliant display of Hydrangea. The green plants created a cretaceous-looking barrier that allowed the lovely violet of the hydrangea to show their colors properly.
"Hmm." Misaki added, as Maxine brought up such a thing. "no. I can clearly offend you if I truly work at it, and I wish not to. Therefore, I've already decided that hospitality is not wasted. Otherwise, why would I offer it?" the gardener would add with that same sing-song tone, seeming to very gently rebuff the statement. "Besides, I would consider it unpardonable manners to tread on a flowering camellia like yourself. I've no interest in something so barbaric. Imagine if I found my name getting the same dispassionate look as the talk of Martial arts? I'd quite rather avoid that."
She would, however, continue on to speak on the garden as asked, not forcing Maxine to respond if she didn't wish to. "You are not incorrect. some of these plants do not change places, having been here for a long time, while others are held elsewhere, away from the front of the garden, while others are set to take their place. Others are sold in order to make up for garden costs while new ones are brought to take on their place. We don't employ a single solution, but rather, what is best for each plant.

Being questioned on her admission left Maxine looking even more awkward for a moment, but then her expression changed… from being bashful, to a deep, deep frown. ”I see… well, it is a matter of fact. I was not designed with a soul, Kazamiya-sama. Being referred to as a thing or treated as a machine is easier to understand than thoughts of any sort of next life or spirituality.” stated the lady bluntly, with no regrets. She was not upset by the thought – instead, she was disappointed that her admission was met with the usual response. ”I am Unid Number 11, SN100961701. I did not have a childhood, parents, nor dreams. My identity does not need such things. Matters of the heart or mind – are of no use to me.”
A frigid explanation, though it was made to sound cool rather than to be honest. Admittedly, Maxine did have many uses for such matters, but to her credit they were mostly for the sake of handling others rather than her own woes. Her angst existed, certainly; but it would not stand in the way of her work. Her ‘functions’, as she might phrase it on this occasion. ”Perhaps you too feel that way? Though I would not condescend as to compare you to a consumer model such as myself, I have known demons who would prefer to see themselves as separate to the rest of their race. If you request it, it would be my honour to change my terminology for you, or be more pragmatic.”
Walking silently for a moment, Maxine was clearly aware that what she was saying didn’t quite follow how she held herself, and was grasping for a more useful conclusion. ”It isn’t to say that matters of persona or emotions aren’t important, but… I should say, I prefer to be treated as a machine, rather than have others attempt to reconcile the differences between me and a true organic. Quoting a serial number might seem unnatural to others, but it is no different to stating your family name for a machine… or, something like that.” added the girl awkwardly, her stoic demeanour quickly cracking under the pressure of her own cowardice. ”Plants require different care to people… they don’t need to be personified. A machine is no different… or so I think.”
Before the Hydrangea flowers, Maxine’s hair just about acted as camouflage – however, there soil wasn’t nearly basic enough to sprout any red ones that might hide her ashamed blush. For a robot sulking about not being treated like a robot… she was not especially good at acting like one. ”…I apologise. That was out of line. It is… simply something I have been thinking about a lot, lately…” she murmured meekly, bowing her head low in submission – before raising it again with a much more vibrant blush, as she was both complimented and very gently rebuked. Misaki was far sharper than she’d given her credit for. Dangerous…
”That is… m-martial arts are just not very practical for me…” grumbled the girl, having to pause further to put together an eloquent response. No amount of processing speed could help when you were under a demon’s heel! ”I respect the discipline and dedication, but it’s not something I can train in…” Only then did Maxine realise she was merely being teased, which just made her composure crumble further. D-Dammit… Juniper and Koma were so much easier to handle than this…!
”R-Regardless… your comparison is deeply appreciated. The Camellia is a noble flower… I am underserving of such praise.” Maxine seemed a little more honest with that remark, though, offering a tiny smile – but maybe that was just a prelude. ”Its interpretation in the Western Lands is most humbling. Hm, t-though, outside of that – err, I-I do not think I am – I do not think I could ever carry the title of – a l-lover, s-so – I-I am sure you did not intend that, o-of course…!”
Maxine hastily checked her tie in an effort to re-centre herself, her blush unfading – on one hand, why someone would design a robot to blush was a mystery unless one knew the Shinobu… but, on the other hand, it was certainly entertaining. ”R-Regarding the garden protocol – that’s a practical decision. The workload must be considerable, though. Hm, but, the honour of owning a plant from such a palace must make for a good price, too… that’s an advantage of such prestigious grounds. The Shinobu gardens are always far more restrained, so please forgive my inexperience with horticulture on this scale.” Finally, she was all business again. Far less entertaining, admittedly, but much more useful… usually. And Maxine, too, was confident once again; hefting her shield of professionalism up once again.
However, it didn’t last long. The android was at least aware that this was someone she couldn’t possibly talk down to. And, maybe one who was a kindred spirit, even if only just a little. She was no machine, certainly; but it wasn’t like Maxine was always on equal terms with most cyborgs or other synthetics to begin with. So… there was something she needed to ask, while things were quiet.
She could feel the air grow icy. Her life might be on the line, but… this could save her life in the future, too.
”…Kazamiya-sama. If it’s not untoward for me to ask… that pink-haired girl you work for. She is… a yakuza heir, isn’t she?”

Misaki took in Maxine's statements with interest sparkling in her eyes, turning to wonder as the conversation continued.
"My, my, for one who has so much reservation on being treated as lesser... you have quite the strong opinion on the subject." The Gardener stated with a satisfied smile. "The Question was not condemnation, though it may have been viewed as such. Has this, perhaps, been an ongoing conversation?"
The gardener stepped forward half a step. "I've no experience being a machine, so I must ask questions, you see." the girl stated. "just as I must with other human beings, who rarely share my way of thinking." The gardener asked. "I would be quite willing to call you unit eleven, you see, I just need to know that it is because it brings you happiness to be called as such, not because someone else has deigned it more acceptable." Misaki would add. "I... Don't know what you mean by reconciling difference. I suppose other humans have a way they treat humans, specifically?" She would ask, seeming a little less understanding. "I did not believe I should give you any less respect than I do every blade of grass in my garden - and I speak to them in the same fashion." Misaki added. "I do not consider you any less capable of feeling pain or suffering than any plant here, either." The Woman would continue, "So while I will not feel your pain as my own, as I do theirs, I felt it to be a terrible thing to do to someone else strong, regardless."
As Maxine asked what she should call her, Misaki gave a slight giggle. "Inferior? I rather think it's the other way around. I was labelled a defective child by my parents. A child's duty is to protect and take care of their parents in their old age, and I've no interest in doing so." Misaki would reply. "I simply don't see anything strong about them, so they're not worth my time. Nonetheless..." The gardener would pause, before continuing. "Many believe I was never meant to exist as I do. Though I've long since decided they're quite wrong."
as the girl faltered from anger to apology, Misaki's eyes would glow as she'd bring up a toothier grin than her normal smile. "Oh my, an apology for answering what I asked? That's unfitting." The girl replied. "Doing one's job correctly is not something I would feel is worth apologizing for. I asked a question, and you gave an answer. you showed me some of your honest feelings, and I now understand you better. If you had given me a less honest response..."
Misaki paused on thinking about that, as purple, demonic energy swirled beneath her for just a moment, her smile seeming just a touch less innocent, before returning to normal as if nothing happened. "Well, I would have been unhappy. Besides... I enjoy being looked in the eye by someone strong. In that moment, you really did look just as beautiful as a Camellia." The girl continued to tease, leaving Maxine to blush without a second thought.
Misaki would simply give another small smile to the next statement. "The apology is quite unnecessary. After all, if you were similarly skilled in horticulture, I might have had to find a different job." The Woman would reply with a teasing look in her eyes. "Much as I certainly wouldn't expect you to learn martial arts, I've no reason to expect you to know all of my interests... well, unless you were looking to live up to your flower's namesake." The florist would tease with a gentle smile.
The mirthful smile was broken with the question regarding Coral, to a look of surprise, before Misaki raised a hand to her chin.
"To be quite honest, I've no idea." She would reply. "Coral has told me she is the Pov'rel family heiress, but little else about them. I only know that she is quite wealthy, and surprisingly capable in ki manipulation. without her, I do believe I would have overdosed on ki and destroyed everything in a thirty mile radius during the Tree of Might Incident." Misaki would add after a moment.
"-Which reminds me, should anyone strange be within fifty yards of the tree of might without good reason, and you happen to notice, please feel free to execute them. I don't believe we want to do that trip a second time."

Misaki’s initial catch of Maxine’s true hypocrisy made the machine wince – it wasn’t something she could protest. ”It is… not often I am asked for my opinion, but most of my superiors have made their voices on the matter noticed. I personally prefer to be treated as an asset… it’s unprofessional for me to be coddled, given my expendable nature. But, that said… I do not dislike a little respect… or, a little…”
Trailing off, Maxine went silent again as Misaki made her on thoughts clear, seeming unsure of how to respond. While she considered the matter a lot, it was not one she spent much time actually talking about. It was very easy to manage a conversation with yourself, even more so with all the parameters up to your own choices or predictions. With an actual other party… not to mention one who was not an AI, it was… a higher level of difficulty.
She’d only get pushed further onto the back foot as Misaki let some of her more malignant nature show – a recognisable display for the android raised by demons, but admittedly many of the Shinobu tended to be of a different streak of villainy. She could handle diplomacy, even if it involved a knife in her back; whereas a show of force was something she was considerably less prepared for. Particularly while already having her head swirling with doubt and worry… ah, this was why she kept her mouth shut!
And Misaki was all too happy to give Maxine more reason to panic, adding plenty of mixed messages with a little teasing on top of the threat and food for thought. Sure, she probably couldn’t overheat from being flustered, but it was making any useful processing near impossible… Misaki’s ladylike nature didn’t make it any easier. She wasn’t good at handling this sort of person! No, she wasn’t good at handling this sort of demon… p-particularly, those that were taller than her. ”T-That is… I-I don’t believe that… my creation was really…” blathered the poor girl, as she reached for a useful answer amongst her algorithms – unfortunately, parallel processing did not mean any of the answers were going to be useful.
Once again tugging on her tie in an effort to recapture her professional origin, Maxine tried to just put a halt to all her runtimes and start her attempts to handle the conversation again from scratch. Not the most elegant solution, but… it’d be better than the alternative. ”I appreciate the sanctity of your way of thinking. Though… I am not sure if I can be considered strong. For, I was merely built that way, rather than earning it. And, even then… I am an old model now. Once, I looked forward to seeing my replacement, but I do not think I shall see a Unid Number such as myself again. So… it will come down to fate to decide when I am retired. It’s an unpleasant feeling, to be without a replacement; but that is part of being a commissioned model, I suppose.”
Thankfully, she wasn’t left to flounder for too long – the question about that colourful girl seemed to give Misaki the chance to focus on something aside from putting Maxine on thinner and thinner ice. ”She seemed quite dignified. If she has such natural talents and can claim her family name with such pride, then perhaps she’s from a family of ki artists or magicians.” suggested Maxine, a little idly; her train of thought was more about whether or not the name rung a bell in her crime circles. After all, keeping a lady like Misaki at her beck and call… well, Maxine could only guess that the ‘gardener’ was in her employment. She, err, decided not to think too hard about the remark on her likely destruction. It was best not to ruminate on such threats after they had passed. ”To be a peer of yours… I hope to never get on her black list, either…”
And, a direct order. Maxine was surprised by it in the midst of this conversation, but she took note of it like any other. ”Half a click? Understood. Though, ‘anyone strange’ may be too broad a category for Lady Juniper and Lord Koma’s preferences. I think they are a little young for such strict decisions… regardless, I shall prioritise your orders for now; as you are the head gardener, and the host of the Tree of Might itself. Should such circumstances arise, I shall assure it has – proper fertiliser.”
The android paused, as Misaki’s words were still sinking in, even as the conversation had changed course – the advantages and disadvantages of parallel processing, there. ”…That said. If I may linger in the duty of a camellia… I would like to ask about your powers. The Shinobu, the clan I was originally designed for, have talents; but throughout their lineage none of their demons could compare to the power that you claim. Was it a matter of your particular heritage, or did you aspire to it?” Maxine paused after offering that much, looking away bashfully to the garden’s colours – ”…I imagine you get that question a lot, so don’t feel like you have to answer. After all, as an android, I can’t exactly learn the same way. I’m just curious… I find the matters of demons interesting, I suppose.”

Misaki's grin grew broader, teasingly and yet just thin enough to show a certain seriousness in the woman's smile as her eyes gave off a soft red glow. "Coddled? Oh my, not at all. I've respect for you, you see, which means I have expectations. I shan't be letting you off with a shrug and a visit to the repairman if mistakes are made - no, I think I shall have you stand in front of me and explain exactly what you were thinking should you make an inappropriate mistake in my gardens~" The Gardener added with a smile. It didn't lack the warmth of before, but it definitely had a teasing dare hidden within it somewhere.
As Maxine continued on, speaking of her statements, her creation, and her lack of earning it, the florist scratched her chin thoughtfully, as though she was trying to follow what the older model Android spoke of. "...I believe there might be some misunderstanding." The gardener added, tilting her head. "ahh yes, that would be an understanding of the term though. I recall a few of the saiyans at my old high school thought the same. some even believed themselves superior to me. Some even decided to prove themselves wrong." Misaki would add with a grin.
"Strength." Misaki would add. "to me, is something I see in Shortbread more than Jade, and in Coral more than Fenrir. It is quite simply whether one accepts reality, or decides on it. The Strong can make proclamations to the weak, without showing force or money, and simply have those things done. It is because they are stronger, so the weaklings are likely to bow their heads even if they wish from the bottom of their hearts not to. The weak are pulled in reality's current. The strong decide where it may flow. I imagine you may have met people like that amongst your employers at some point." Misaki would ask, before looking slightly to the side.
"I'm quite used to watching people simply accept any words I say, any request with a meek look and a nod, so I quite value the feeling of someone baring their fangs back at me. It's far more interesting." Misaki replied with a smile.
At the statement with Coral, however, Misaki just gave a shrug. "I think it's quite difficult to get on her blacklist. She's quite difficult to hurt though. Her ki shield resists my solar axis well enough I still cannot break it, even when we play ping-pong." The gardener added.
And then, realizing. "oh, silly me, I just realized how ridiculous that sounded." the florist would add, before correcting herself. "It is human ping-pong. Coral sometimes refers to it as 'bouncing', as well."
Misaki didn't give too much time for the reaction to the statement as the conversation continued forwards, flighting from one conversation to the next as ever, as Misaki gave a smile. "Actually, I've very rarely been asked about the source of my powers. I actually believe my strength might not have to do with my demonic portion, though. or at least that I am still unable to access a very large amount of it. It's quite possible I've barely tapped into my power." Misaki added. "As for where it comes from... I have quite possibly the same amount of idea as you!" Misaki would add with a grin that seemed to defy the idea. "I've absolutely no idea what my bloodline comes from in the Kazamiya clan is. My parents were not interested in teaching me my family history and, well, I lacked interest in finding out what could have possibly created them. I assumed they were weak and not worth the bother. I've only actually put any effort into training shortly after a rather embarassing loss I was given shortly after dealing with the devil's cook gangs with the rest of Juniper and Koma's hired help. I was quite surprised to find out my power could grow exponentially just by doing a few push-ups and dealing with difficult situations. I simply had no reason to learn before now." Misaki added, thinking about it. "I suppose you could say most of this comes effortlessly to me, but I've no idea why. I assume it's because I am strong."

Despite Misaki’s intentions and demeanour, the threat of having Maxine be punished by explaining herself rather than any usual discipline fell especially flat – forcing a machine of (mostly) logic to rationalise its actions was not quite as intimidating. It was a welcome chance for her to recoup her composure, really. Rather refreshing compared to Princess’ rebuke or Hatsuka running her through. ”Understood. I’ll submit my justification along with the proper article citations, should such an event transpire. But – so long as the instructions are correct, my actions will be correct. That’s the nature of a machine.” answered the lady, her tone cool and dry. She wouldn’t be intimidated so easily! Most of the time!
However – her response only reinforced Misaki’s later explanation. The nature of the weak was to follow, was it? Yet, she called the android who could not even exist without instructions strong… Maxine couldn’t follow that logic. The only reason she even still moved was because she followed her Duchess’ last orders… well, first and last orders. Maxine’s expression clouded at the thought – certainly, she had ambitions for turning the future of the Duchies, but… she could not say it was by her own will. If Duchess Rhyme wished to live, then she could only serve the Shinobu…
Though, Misaki was still correct in some sense. Maxine couldn’t always overlook things she thought were incorrect. Rolling over was part of her job, certainly; but there were times when it was more efficient to speak up. Just depended on the company. ”It’s tempting to say nothing, should it avoid unnecessary trouble. But, at the same time, I don’t have any retribution to be afraid of. Earthlings have lives to protect… whereas, my Duchess… well, the Shinobu Clan is important, but, when it comes to me…”
Well, to say any more would probably be unnecessary.
The reassurance about Coral was nice. The discussion of using a likely yakuza heir as a ping-pong ball was somewhat less nice. Maxine did not wish to think about her chances of surviving such an event. The android’s uneasy frown was comical after all her earlier confidence, but at least it was easy enough to understand. She didn’t get any insurance on her parts… repairs were costly and unpleasant affairs, not a matter of pouring on enough ki. ”I-I shall… keep her imperviousness in mind…”
Her uneasiness continued into the next topic, but for more distinct reasons. The Shinobu Clan were a little odd for their willingness to muddy their bloodline with Earthlings, but they still kept their family name in high regard. Certainly, Maxine had met others who did not care for the clan, but… the thought that Misaki had no clue at all left her a little unsettled. As someone who had to stain herself in blood and tears to find out her reasons for being who she was and where she was, she felt a deep disconnect with the gardener. As a machine, she could not exist without searching for such things… without orders, she was nothing. Though, there was a contradiction there, wasn’t there? But, she could not bear to consider it…
”I see. Exponential growth from mere difficulty…” murmured Maxine, pulling herself away from the prior line of thought – not that this one was much more appealing. To be able to become so powerful through so little effort… well, that was no doubt the benefit of being a living thing. She’d heard people envy her as a machine before, with the belief that she could simply upgrade to reach such heights. But, that was only a half-truth. For some, that was perhaps true; but for her – there was no magic bullet like that. She was old… so old. She couldn’t even interface with the newer lines of technology anymore.
”…I have heard that the growth of Saiyans is similar to that. But, I do not know any more than that. It isn’t a line of research that has appealed to me in the past.” remarked the lady simply, a hint of bitterness slipping through her professional demeanour. ”I shall keep such capacities in mind, though. I imagine with such potential, you will earn plenty of attention from the clans in this land – if not from Lord Koma himself, given his own dedication to the pursuit of personal perfection. But… I do not think I can offer any more insight on the topic. As much as I know about demons – I don’t know about effortlessness.”

Misaki would give a smile. "Is that so?" The Gardener would ask, a sweet, lilting tone going through her. "Well, I'm certain we won't have to test that hypothesis in the future. you do admirable work around here. I've yet to find issue." Misaki would respond, seeming to throw the idea from her mind, before continuing. "Still, I think believing in that might cause harm in your own work, in the future. Your logic centers were built by humans - therefore, intentionally or unintentionally, it's quite possible they've coded in ideas or ways of thinking they believe are logical that are not necessarily true, yes?" She'd ask. "Certainly, I've seen badly programmed robots exhibit some aberrant behavior - though I would describe you as the utter opposite, it still begs the question. Well... could I ask if you know who programmed you?"
As Maxine explained her justification for correcting others, Misaki would simply give a shrug. "Tempting, hmm? So you've temptations to deal with, as well?" Misaki would ask. "Then, you've desires of your own? Things that you feel conflicted to say something upon?" the woman would ask, all curiosity as she looked Maxine directly in the eyes, seeming very interested in whatever she'd say next... though as Maxine continued on, Misaki would give a shrug, and just add something simple.
"Well, Coral's not exactly impervious. She can only seem to activate that shield consciously, and it can be overwhelmed if she's struck fast enough consecutively. I would appreciate it if you aided her were she to find herself in such a situation, though that is of course, not an order. I couldn't possibly ask you to put her safety ahead of your duties, given she's not a proper staff member here, now could I?" The Florist would ask. "But it would certainly make me much happier if you did."
With that, it was Misaki's turn to realize she'd almost said too much, as the mask of uncaring sentimentality slipped for just a moment and revealing a slight tinge of embarassment, before Misaki turned around and lead Maxine to the shed. "The keys are here, here, and here, and if you require a way to get into the more dangerous chemicals in the back, you'd use this key to open the lock." The Gardener would simply explain, before waiting to answer Maxine's next sentiment.
"It's going to be quite a waste of time for the other clans, sadly. I plan on being a gardener for the Lady Juniper and Lord Koma for as long as I am allowed. I've no true interest in their politics. Nor will I garden for them. It seems their obsession with something so simple allows for quite the waste of time, doesn't it?"

While it was admittedly tempting to just revel in the compliments, Maxine handled it as always; giving a humble bow and not a single hint of a smile. It was natural, surely. Misaki may be able to wield power many times her own with many times her ease; but Maxine had spent her time on this planet serving like this. She might be an old model, but her purpose had not ceased to exist just yet. Or, at least, her functionality. Her purpose vanished before she was born.
Matters of machine morality, though. ”--- You are absolutely correct. I do not entirely agree with the ideals of my original creator, in truth. However, whether that is a reflection that I am a failure or a success is unclear. All I can attest is that I was built as a commission for the Shinobu Clan, and I have not fallen below their expectations so far. And, surely, as a mere consumer model, it is the consumer’s morals that should judge me.” Shadows passed over Maxine’s expression; a fleeting frown. ”Otherwise, there is nothing that can be done about faults that are deeper than my existence. That is the nature of a tool. Could I even comprehend such a fallacy? I have heard it said that there is comfort in a marionette’s strings, but… well, it is not important.”
”Regardless. My creator was Doctor Unid, an artificial intelligence researcher who leaned into military technology in his later years. I don’t believe he is alive anymore. I was made a long time ago, now. Longer that I have been active, you see…” A complicated expression coloured Maxine’s face, but she soon returned to her professional composure. Her age wasn’t important right now, so she ought to just silence herself. ”I was made a commissioned project for Duchess Rhyme, of the Shinobu Clan, prior to her passing… so, I am likely an oddity amongst his works. Temptations, desires, and conflicts – I hear it’s befitting of a demon to have made a machine with such things, but I don’t understand it myself.”
However, though not exactly the most aware person around, Maxine did not miss Misaki’s interest in the subject. Violet eyes narrowed; LEDs flickering with intensity – best to nip this in the bud, if the appropriate pun could be excused. ”Yes, it does lead to such concerns. Conflicts of interest, and sentimentality. But, I shall make this clear to you, as I did for Lord Koma and Lady Juniper. I was created for Duchess Rhyme, and her clan… she may be just a memory now, but that priority is still absolute.” stated the machine sternly, angling her shoulder towards the chief gardener. A disrespectful demeanour… but, if this was the one matter that could never be claimed to be a temptation. ”Should anything stand in the way of my final duty – I shall not tolerate it.”
But, with that said, she was all nervousness and humility again. Being told Coral’s weaknesses earned an uneasy frown from Maxine, really wondering how the noble demon came to know about that matter. ”Property can be replaced, young ladies cannot… it would be a poor look to allow harm to come to her on my watch. She, too, is one of your precious flowers, isn’t she?” Realising her odd remark after a few seconds, Maxine hastily backed down again – ”A-Ah, please ignore that! I am not very well practiced with metaphor…”
Glad to be back to business, she would nod obediently along with Misaki’s directions – though, a faint sparkle in her eyes at the mention of ‘dangerous chemicals’ was hard to ignore. Someone had no doubt had experience with that before. But, she was more intrigued by Misaki’s dedication to her unlikely clan than her duties, for once. ”Power is its own reward, they say. I don’t know anything about it myself. However, I can certainly respect loyalty to your clan. I cannot say I have such ties to the Lord and Lady of this household… but, I imagine I will be retired and replaced before the day comes that the Shinobu and Oolong clash once more.” murmured the machine, glancing up into the sky wistfully, before scanning the garden instead. The colours and shapes hid such intricacies… she could not help but be jealous. ”But, I hope this garden will last longer than any plastic camellia.”

Misaki would tilt her head and think about Maxine's statements, as she trailed off. "I believe some find that, yes. Still, perhaps I wish to hear of unimportant things, too. Or should we focus our lively conversation entirely on matters of their import to the world?" Misaki would ask, before darting her eyes upwards.
"...But it is truthful, I believe. I learned that during the recent temple incident. A Misaki who'd fallen for the temptations of such comfort... though on her own terms." The Gardener would add, before giving a fleeting smile. "At least, it allowed me to understand the appeal of weakness." The gardener admitted. "Though it truly doesn't suit me."
at the next statement, Misaki raised a slight eyebrow, thinking about it. "So you believe yourself to be an oddity?" Misaki would ask. "Still, quite a wondrous one. I'd imagine that explains the military power and expertise you have." The florist would note, "I wish I'd known your creator, though it seems he's wilted before I was born. Would you be able to give me any way to read his research? It would be a helpful distraction from biology, and artificial intelligence research has significant relations to my field of study." Misaki would mention, making a mental note before adding "I've not been asked to do a project yet, but It's in the syllabus that next semester I shall have to make something unique."
At the notion of Maxine's anger, however, Maxine's anger did not make the Gardener budge. if anything, her smile grew quite broad as she saw the machine's face, before moving just a little closer, her face one of childlike admiration. "My... I would never be so bold as to make such an assertion. I've no interest in interfering with your politics, nor any ill will towards the Shinobu. I certainly haven't plotted to steal your allegiance." The Gardener would add, a wistful smile. "But I certainly don't mind the mistaken assertion if I can see that in your eyes." Misaki would add with a smile, closing her own for a moment. "I've met cowardly robots before, or ones that could easily transfer to a new master with a crossed wire or a simple acknowledgement of their death. It caused me to dislike them for quite some time. You, on the other hand... I can feel the strength radiating from you." Misaki would add, before opening her eyes. "That conviction is quite rare even amongst programmed beings, and it allows me to see you blossom, little Camellia." the demon would add, locking eyes with Maxine.
As the conversation turned to Coral, Misaki went a little pink. "She is one of mine... or am I one of hers? It... blurs from time to time. I can't say I... hmm. Perhaps there are things beyond even my comprehension - for now, at least." The gardener stated with barely concealed narcissism, an obvious concern washing over her face as she seemed to lack an understanding of her own companion. "she is quite precious - though, you're quite valuable yourself, so please avoid damaging yourself."
As Maxine continued on, Misaki raised an eyebrow at the statement. "That seems odd. I've all the power in the world and it hasn't particularly improved anything for me." Misaki would note. "Perhaps I'm just missing something. Or simply don't have enough of it. that seems quite implausible, though." The gardener would note, trying to figure out the logic involved and missing her childlike interpretation.
As the Shinobu and Oolong were brought up, Misaki would just give a shrug. "Then I'll just grow so powerful that the shinobu shan't feel the inclination to clash. That should be simple enough. And it would mean that you'd have no worry of loyalties" The gardener would add with a small shrug, unconcerned by the idea, or by the idea that thnings could possibly be more complex than that.
After showing her one more key - to lock the bathroom, if needed - Misaki turned to her, smiling as she saw Maxine enjoying the simple pleasure of cloud-watching. "It may. But I've already resolved I'm going to keep you around for as long as it is within my ability. And as I am quite strong, my abilities are similarly vast." Misaki would note.

Misaki’s musings on a life of comfort left Maxine noticeably disquieted – she hadn’t given that sort of thing much consideration. After all, she had no concept of life without work. But… she could say that she did not enjoy fighting. Maybe it’d be nice to retire. Spend her days organising weddings and doing gardening, rather than being on the frontlines. No more mixing with punks or chambering bullets. It wouldn’t be so bad.
But, the Duchies always needed blood. And hers was the most worthless of all.
”I’m not sure if I can claim to be unique… but, I guess an oddity wouldn’t be incorrect. Um, my military skills aren’t that special, though…” awkwardly replied the machine – albeit pointedly not objecting to being flattered for her other skills. ”Doctor Unid… was once intent on advancing artificial intelligence, but finances took priority, in the end. I managed to salvage a lot of his work after his company was dissolved, but most of it is just private military prototyping and coding fragments. I am not exactly a cutting edge model, so I cannot speak for his excellence in the field. From what I have managed to find of my own creation, most of my development is owed to Duchess Rhyme’s patience and kindness. Misplaced patience, I suppose, with how it ended…”
Unsurprisingly, it only took that subject’s mention for Maxine’s gaze to turn mournful, though she was already in an awkward position to respond to Misaki’s request. Data on her own development wouldn’t be precious to her in most circumstances – she was just a lot of interconnected code after all. There was no sentimental value there. But, if Misaki was hoping for knowledge on artificial intelligence, then the only proper data she could offer was her own emotional diagnostics… and with that would come those recorded memories of a Maxine that hadn’t existed. Conversations she’d had before she was born, so to speak. A connection with the Duchess she so adored, but through the eyes of someone else. Herself, yet… not.
”…I can see what I can come up with for you, but it’s hard for me to offer much substance. My main understanding of his artificial intelligence work is from his very early days, so I don’t think it would apply much now. It was… maybe a century ago, now. And, my only example of his later work – is… it is…” Maxine trailed off promptly, clearly having no clue of how to broach the subject without breaking characters. ”---I don’t think it’s what you’d be looking for. Maybe the code would be of worth, but the records… well; I, too, am an old model, now.”
While tempted to mention Two, the earlier AI she’d managed to reboot from her creator’s old network storage, Maxine’s heart was too uneasy to speak any further – she could always say something later, anyway. Right now, she had a lot to think about. Even more so as Misaki sprinkled compliments upon her; albeit compliments she did not feel she deserved.
”Is it conviction? I’m merely following pre-programmed orders. Realistically, obeying someone who is deceased is a waste of time. My Duchess will never speak again.” With cold words, Maxine insulted her own way of life. But, she did not say she would ever stop, either. ”In that way, I am a failure. However, the Duchies have deigned to honour my choice. I shall not disappoint them. My chairman said, ‘It is incorrect, but it is not a mistake.’ That’s all I can defend my choice with.”
Talk of being precious, and being kept around; they filled Maxine with insecurity. She was replaceable, after all. It felt strange. The Shinobu respected her, but she appreciated her own worthlessness in their eyes. In a way – it was an understanding they shared. ‘To die without leaving anything behind’, they all lived like that. Though, in her eyes, she felt that Misaki understood that to extent. If she was to be a tool, anyway… it wasn’t so wrong to be one of value. Still, it could be inconvenient in her line of work. Being expendable was very good for job opportunities.
Speaking of which, Maxine felt she was beginning to get a better sense of who Misaki was with the way she spoke of power and the clans. She was… sort of naïve. Bullying the Shinobu into submission like that… that was precisely why the meagre clan had its eyes on the grand Oolong! ”Kazamiya-sama, maybe you need to set your mind on a goal.” spoke the android very cautiously, unsure if this was a terrible idea or not – and so, she began running her mouth as soon as she felt like it might just be ill-fated. ”S-So to speak, it is – not to say you do not currently have any goal, but to say – maneuvering power in the right direction. W-Well, many speak highly of the World Martial Arts Tournament, but that’s just the simplest aspect – maybe, perhaps there’s some gardening shows you could contend with. Or… or, or…”
What did the Shinobu usually do?
”Maybe you should get married?”

Misaki's eyes were briefly unreadable, as she saw Maxine's own expressions, the look quite simply telling her that the subject was sore. "I see. It would be impolite for me to dig further, so I shall allow you your privacy." Misaki would mention, thinking it through. Addressing the second part instead, Misaki would give a smile and nod. "I would be quite interested, and - I'm actually more interested due to the age. As time goes on, certain techniques are lost or considered useless for use in a more recent model, after all. Some of those devices or useful pieces of things are then forgotten despite their later applicability. This was true a long time ago regarding the ventilation in housing, for instance, which was only held onto by people who live in places like this - traditional architecture, as it will." Misaki would explain. "It wasn't until later that people found an air conditioner or electric fan simply weren't convenient everywhere, and older building styles were revisited." The Greenette continued, hoping to make conversation, even as she placed down some keys, before putting them on the path towards the tree of might, the last site they needed to visit.
As Maxine Explained her own feelings on the matter, Misaki would raise an eyebrow. "Well, of course it is. You've not only managed to defy the expectations of superiors, but also yourself for the sake of what you value. It may be failure, but it's failure you've doggedly chosen. Similarly, you've chosen to not allow us to define you by our expectations, but by your own definitions of who and what you are, have you not? I would consider such a servant who would so brazenly talk back to me of how they are treated to be quite convicted." The florist added. "Failure or success have nothing to do with conviction, only how tightly you cling to it." Misaki would note. "and you are by far the most stubborn machine or human I have ever met."
As Maxine kept moving, she thought about that idea, before looking to the tree of might in the distance, and listening to Maxine's advice, the thoughts went through Misaki's head, and she opened her mouth to confidently say that she was planning on going to win the worlds martial arts tournament shortly, the shows she was hoping to use to establish Juniper's own prestige, only for Maxine to Jump into...
The Greenette's face went red, as the thoughts went through her head. 'Marriage' seemed like such a strange concept. she had never considered being close to someone like that before, even if she knew that logically, girls tended to go for such a thing. It did seem like a lot of people spoke of how marriage completed them, but she'd never really considered it. Even if she had, she just wasn't sure who would be a good choice. Coral?
...Not Coral.
Percy? Maybe, she was quite cute, and she appreciated nature on a similar level as Misaki herself.
Was there anyone else that appealed? She realized she didn't have a lot of options here. Jade just didn't quite appeal to her in that fashion, and she was too young anyways, and Fenrir didn't seem the type to pin himself down even if she could tolerate his staggering lack of manners. Toma? She'd barely seen him in the teahouse, and that put him out of eligibility. she'd want someone reliable. hmm...
"Maybe that would be a good way to do it." Misaki added, a hand under her chin as she thought it through, mental processes skipping through to vocal processes as she responded. "Well, would you like to marry me, miss Maxine?" The Florist asked, as simply as though she was offering a drink.
The thought only lasted a second, before she quickly added. "Wait, hmm, that's not right. I'd need to know you a little longer before I asked you that question, I think. And we've never even dated. It would be improper for me to ask you that right now. I apologize. I shall make sure that if I ask you again it will be after I've made the effort to do so properly." Misaki would add, her tone far too even to give away any sort of emotions on the subject.
Instead, she would simply go on to add, "I simply don't know who I would pick in that case, however. I know only a few women I'm interested in, and no men that are available. I'm uninterested in political marriage, since there's simply nothing they could offer me I do not already possess, and I've no interest in someone I have not personally chosen. Perhaps I should put some effort in meeting more of the lords and ladies around the city? but many of them are boring, and arrogant, and if I were to simply snip an unseemly branch I would likely cause some trouble for Lord Koma. Quite a vexing problem." Misaki would continue on, lost somewhat in her own world.

The techniques of artificial intelligence… truth be told, Maxine tried not to linger too much on that particular science, in spite of what she’d dug up for the sake of her own development. It was a rational matter, but it was still existential. So, it was often an – inefficient line of thought. Still, Misaki’s explanation had merit to it, so the android’s defences were whittled down just a little. ”I see… I suppose there is such a thing as the right circumstances for anything. If you are certain about it, then I shall see what I can copy for you that is relatively readable. The Doctor… did not follow best practice when it comes to his programming’s legibility. Still, gardening and robotics – you must keep yourself busy.”
Though that line of conversation might make her a little nervous, talk of Maxine’s ambition – if it could be called that – was even closer to the machine’s heart. Or, lack there-of. This time, though, she simply fell silent as Misaki explained and guided the pair towards the Tree of Might. Self-determination… was not the path she thought she’d chosen. But, Misaki’s description of it was correct. Choice might not be the right word. However – did choice even matter? How she herself might see it meant nothing to others, in the end. Reality was merely a reflection of others. ”Stubbornness, is it…?” murmured Maxine, seeming – not so much downcast, but melancholic all the same. ”I mustn’t allow it to be an issue, though...”
The Tree of Might loomed in the distance – majestic, or imposing? Maxine had no answer to that question, for its existence was beyond her in the first place. Talk of the divine essence; of life energy; and of exponential power; they were all things she had no bearing on. People clinged to so many strange things to find a way to become more than they already were… but, well, maybe this was just the inevitable goal of a gardener. And, speaking of which, it seemed like it’d grown a bit already. For some reason, that particular thought unnerved her ---
”E-Eh?”
Maxine had grown completely distracted while Misaki had been mulling over her question – she’d just assumed that the lady had dismissed it. B-But instead – how had it ended up like this, exactly?! After all that talk of death and loyalty to the end, hearing Maxine squeak was a stark contrast. ”T-That is…” began the girl, turning bright red herself and reaching for excuses – a-ah, not to say that Misaki was – unappealing, but – she was just a meaningless machine! She was surely not worthy. And, they hadn’t gone out or anything! They had to ask the families!
Maxine’s expression went from shock to confusion to desperation as she tried to process things, and so far the answers were not what she was hoping for. The Shinobu wouldn’t mind so long as Misaki was strong or rich… so, the Kazamiya – but, she was the heir, wasn’t she? And, Maxine was fairly sure they weren’t a duchie or notable clan, so it’d probably be a promotion to marry into the Shinobu. A-And, they were in need of strong sorts than Maxine, so the Chairman would be eager… then, they’d have an excuse to retire Maxine to paperwork rather than being any kind of enforcer –
N-No, this line of thought wasn’t helping at all! How about – look, being a wife in the Duchies wouldn’t be that appealing! Usually, someone handled the family business while the other was the face… or, it was a marriage of convenience. In this case, Misaki would surely want to be independent, so that’d leave the housework to Maxine. She’d basically be doing her job as a maid, but with a regal property to take care of. So, not that much different to her early years. Quietly serving the household of the Shinobu had been a golden time in her existence…
…no, but it’d be bland without any danger! Then, Misaki would call, asking for close air support – but, Maxine couldn’t compare, so she’d be wounded in action by some amazing martial artist Saiyan. Wrecked once again, it’d be like nothing had changed. No – Misaki had called her precious, so – she’d charge in, powered up by emotions of vengeance! Bringing her full power to bear, she’d scorch the earth and eradicate the enemy. Only hours late would Maxine be aware of the destruction, though, and she would slowly leave recovery mode and turn back on. Abandoned as usual… no, no doubt Misaki would carry her wife home. A-Ah, her sensors would flicker on, only to find herself in – princess carry?! Giant form princess carry?!?
At this point, Maxine just about had steam coming out her ears. Her ridiculous prediction was only halted by a faint click as the LEDs in her eyes faded, as the machine attempted a soft reset. After that, though, she’d be back to her senses. Kind of. ”Technically – if you order –“ began the girl, only to trail off as she caught up with Misaki’s added comment, practically minutes after the fact. ”Y-Yes, you’re right… it’d be i-improper…”
Questions of who else was worth her time in the city was a – much easier matter for Maxine to wrangle with. Unfortunately, though… right now, there weren’t many who’d probably appreciate Misaki’s independence or ferocity. At least, none that would be worth her time. Hatsuka, her fellow Shinobu enforcer… was not an option, due to that conceit. Nor their spoiled Princess. Kyoma, their would-be prince – he was a nicer boy than most people knew, but with that in mind Misaki might be… t-too much for him. As for outside the Shinobu…
…she got a feeling of dread when Coral’s name came to her lips, so she decided to stay silent.
”…I would invite you to one of the Shinobu clan’s mixers or parties, but… I think they may be slightly overstimulating for someone with as much power as you. I hear that is a bad mix.” remarked Maxine carefully, her tone going back to that of a calm professional; even though inwardly she was still in a bit of a panic. Shinobu parties… alcohol was a given, and drugs were usually on the table as well. ”Otherwise… there are some notable patrons at the Flying Monkey, but… I hear that isn’t very well respected among the women of the Duchies…”
A-And, right now, she didn’t want to think too hard about Misaki in a maid outfit, you know? …damn, too late…!

Misaki was quick to smile at the comment on her skills. "I've little use for free time the way many do. most of the time, at least. while I take days where I can to relax, I'm very used to simply filling my days with work. When I was younger, idle time meant time spent at home, and that simply wasn't a pleasant experience, so I found other things to do and places to go." Misaki explained with a smile that... seemed just a little less genuine, suddenly. as though bits started to fray and the person underneath didn't quite match, before she gave a shrug.
Though as Maxine continued, Misaki tilted her head slightly. "...Really? That's disappointing. I rather enjoy it. The fact you have strength of will to pursue what you wish to, even if that is pursuing others wishes, is quite a beautiful quality." She'll say with a smile. "So I'd really rather continue to see you do stubborn and unexpected things." The gardener would offer. "Although I'd also rather you did it because you wished to, and not just to please me." She'd add with a sing-song voice. "Although wishing to please me, I suppose, would be fine."
The sing-song humming as the Gardener watered the tree of might simply served to set the pace for a peaceful day, as Maxine continued on. "Oh, I've never drank, so it's hardly the place for me anyways. I think I'd rather like to try it at some point, but certainly not amongst people I don't know. it might be quite dangerous for them." Misaki would say with a smile, giving it thought. "Well, while it might not be respected, I am not a woman of the duchies proper at the moment, just a simple gardener. I imagine it would be fine were I to go there." She'll say. "but only if you'd escort me."
