A valuable item worth 1d30 times the Zeni paid for the Capcha (40,000z) which the character must roleplay 500 words pawning.
A bird skull, a selection of coloured vials, a tome wrapped up in chains – yeah, this was still in the Halloween spirit. Just… it tended to be Halloween all year around in this store. Even then, though… they had tried to get in the mood.
”Well, points for effort, huh?”
”Yes, well, it’s not easy, nowadays. Feels like phones are outpacing wands, you see.”
Sadly, the tiny dancing skeleton toy was just not enough to draw in customers for this season.
A magic shop wasn’t really Waka’s style, much less one with as much history as this – but, it’d grown to be one of her haunts. A long time ago, she’d searched everyone in a panic for some answer to her growing pains. The newer places were no help; all plastic and metal, not vintage wood and cobwebs; no experience. But, the proprietor here had helped her with her questions and given her some direction in how to handle her Majin powers. Easy stuff for any mage, she guessed; but this old man was the only one who’d taken her seriously.
Now that her ears scraped the rafters, most of them tended to take her seriously.
”Right, let’s talk bus'ness. I’m not buyin' today, though; don’t get excit'd. But, I got someth'ng you might be keen on.” rumbled Waka, leaning – well, more like looming – over the quaint counter of the tiny store. With some rummaging in her sweater, the fox brought out a small orb. Though it barely fit between her fingers, it’d sit nicely on a normal person’s palm. With a swirl of pink, it almost looks like an oversized sweet; but its translucent surface and the shifting gradient within betrayed its magical nature.
”Hm, you get your hands on all sorts of odd things, don’t you?” mused the shop’s owner – an aging Beastman; albeit more owl than human unlike the mostly human Waka. He peered briefly at the item, but soon seemed satisfied with his examination – “But, this isn’t a bad prize, for a change. I’d guess you were paid with it, or something like that?”
”Nah, not this time. It’d been left in one of those Capch' mach'nes – not even a prize from it, just left beh'nd. I figur'd it was magical, but… not much more than that. Though, hon'stly, usually I can’t even do that much, so… eh, maybe you’re rubb'ng off on me at last.”
”I don’t think so, unfortunately for you. This is a Majin tool… well, if you’ve ever heard of witches or wizards storing magical energy in jewels, this is the same idea, but for demons like yourself. Usually, it wouldn’t be worth much, since the exterior is just made of glass – but, the power in it is very dense, so it could be just as useful as one of those charged gems.”
”Right. So, it’s just a real good magic batt'ry?”
”Not a bad approximation, if ruthlessly blunt. A master would have put together something like this – filling glass is very different to working with a dense gem’s structure.”
Waka just shrugged off the lecture – she listened, but… she was no magician. Noticing her disinterest, the owl raised an eyebrow, before clearing his throat. ”I’d be willing to pay up for this, as it appears to be the work of an exemplar in the field. I once worked with a Majin researcher who used things like this, and with this style of mana as well. Anyone else would just be able to sell it as a battery, but… as I can say I know its origins, I think I can give it a better pitch than that.”
”A Majin research'r, huh? I didn’t think anyone took us – err, well, them – that seriously.” In spite of her snarky demeanour, Waka was genuinely interested now. Stories of Majin tended to start and end with explosions, at least when told be other people; so this was a novelty. A Majin researcher, huh… did they own a chocolate factory or something? Judging by the glint in this man’s eye, though, she had a hunch it was far more than that. ”Hm, well, today’s a busy day for me, but I’d like to hear that tale sometime. Don’t go senile until then, hotshot.”
”Harrumph. I’ve got plenty of years yet, junior. Size isn’t everything, hm?” snapped back the man, attempting to stare down his beak at the fox – but, when you’re looking up, it’s rather difficult. Even standing on a stepladder behind the counter wasn’t making things even! ”Still, I think you’ll be curious. Maybe I’ll make a student of you yet, Wakana. Just needs the right incentive…”
Despite the banter, Waka gave but an idle wave – ”Yeah, well, keep it on my tab. Time is money, and I need money. But… I’ll pay for that story of yours in due time, old tim'r.” rumbled the lady, before turning tail – though she’d need to duck to get out of the shop. ”I don’t know about learn'ng magic or anythin', but… this Majin stuff is starting to take my fancy.”
”But, weren’t you –?”
His words were met with little more than a shut door; only the tinkling of the bell remained. He could only frown deeply – or as much as a beak could. ”From calling herself a slave to her demon side, to speaking like this.” he grumbled, trying to turn his focus back to his business. He wasn’t looking forward to unpacking all his latest second-hand tomes. But, that glass sphere caught his eye again; its ever so slightly frosted exterior glinting in the light. Sugar-frosted, naturally… ”From calling herself a slave to her demon side, to taking pride in being a slave, hm?”
