Sanare was just leaving the Tempo store, her favorite shop where she would hang out with her friends and play board games. She was going home for the evening when she received a text message from Master Avis, her martial arts instructor. He was asking her out for a cup of coffee. It wasn’t common for him to ask her to coffee, but it also wasn’t completely out of the ordinary. So she decided to take him up on his offer. It took her about 15 minutes to get to the coffee shop, a nice little place called The Witches Brew, which in her opinion had the best coffee in Central City. It was quite literally the best cup of coffee you could ever imagine.
Master Avis wasn't there when she arrived, so she ordered herself a cup of coffee, and then sat near the door so he would see her when he walked in. A few minutes later he walked in and walked over to her. She got up to greet him.
“Hello Master,” She said with a slight head nod.
“It’s good to see you Sanara,” he said in reply. He continued, “Let me get a cup of coffee and then I'll talk to you about what I brought you out for at this hour.
She went back to her drink and waited for him to come back to the table. A few minutes later he came back with his own cup of coffee and sat down across from her. He took a rather large sip of his coffee and then, putting it down, he said, "So the reason I called you is because I have a sort of mission or job, whatever you want to call it, for you. It comes by way of a friend."
Sanare looked at him and said, “I'm not really sure I can help with a whole lot of things but I’ll try to help with what it is that your friend needs.”
Master Avis smiled at her and said, “He needs you to find his daughter.”
Sanare’s mouth flew open as she gasped, “Master! you must be kidding! Surely this is a job for the police, not for me! Who am I, that I could find someone's daughter? What are you even talking about?”
Master Avis shook his head and said, “Sanare, listen to me. Your time of being this happy go lucky girl where you wonder sort of aimlessly around life must come to an end. You have value far beyond what you consider yourself. Do you know why I trained you in how to use your ki energy.”
She took a moment to respond, “No, I assumed you just thought I would be able to do it.”
“Yes, except you had a rather difficult time learning how to do it, more difficult than the other two students that I have trained.”
She looked at him and wondered for a moment before saying, “I thought you had trained many students in ki manipulation?”
He said, “No, you are the third and probably the last. It's very rare for someone to have the innate ability to be very good at controlling their ki. Anyone can do it, but it's very difficult to find people who would dedicate themselves enough to be worth training. You happen to be one of them. You were actually the very best student I ever had once you figured out how to use ki. You went leaps and bounds beyond anything I could have imagined. In fact when I first started training you, you had a power level of 150, but now you have a power level of over 900! It's staggering how quickly you grow in just a few short months.
She blinked uncomfortably and said, “I don't understand. What is a power level?”
Master Avis smiled and said, “A power level is a quantification of your battle capabilities in a numbered form. The higher the number, the greater your overall finding capabilities are. There are devices that can detect this but I have a unique ability to actually see people's fighting capabilities; it's something that I can teach you at a later date. It's not the most accurate thing but in general the higher someone's power level the more capable they are at fighting.
Sanare thought about it and said, “You're saying my power level has grown expectantly in the last 2 years.
He shook his head and replied, “No Sanare. I'm saying your power level has grown exponentially in the last six months. You haven't been training your ki for that long. You are a fighter of almost unmatched magnitude, albeit unrefined. You are a young warrior who could rise to be one of the greatest fighters this world has ever seen. I know that you are seeking a job in the medical field and I think you ought to pursue that but you can make a real difference in the world around you. You have a power that can right wrongs. I didn't train you in ki so that you can just show off a couple of fancy tricks now and then. I trained you hoping that I would train a warrior who's fighting capabilities would be great enough that she would be a change in the world; the kind of change I only wished I could have been.
Sanare looked at him in wonder, saying, “Master you're far more capable for this than I am .
“No Sanare,” he said. “I have many things left to teach but they're more technical in nature and not in terms of power. Your power has eclipsed me. My power level at best is 450.
“Are you saying I'm stronger than you?”
“I'm saying that if we were to fight my only hope of winning would be techniques that I have over you, but I would be fighting an uphill battle because you are stronger than me in every way. Your strength, your speed, your endurance and your ability to control ki are all greater than my own abilities. Yes even the things that you learned recently have already eclipsed my fighting capabilities in every way. I could probably win because of your inexperience. My techniques are great and you haven't seen them all so a lot of it would throw you off your rhythm. Yet, again it would be a very hard and uphill battle for me. Once you adapted to my techniques I wouldn’t stand a chance though.
She sat there for a long moment not saying anything. She never thought she would live to surpass her own master. She had noticed she seemed unparalleled in her capabilities when she was sparring other people, but to be stronger than Master Avis? Yet to be unrefined in that strength; she felt a sense of confusion wash over her.
Where did she acquire this power? Why does she have this power? She never sought to be a powerful warrior, she just started learning martial arts by chance and because it was kind of fun and made her feel good. She wasn't trying to change the world; she was just trying to survive it.
After a long moment she said, "Okay, I'll give it a shot. Tell me what to do."
