Ruby has a strong fire within her that starts to surface when she's angry. She believes that if someone puts their all in to something then they can achieve and resents slackers and people who hold themselves back.

The Nijima lived in the mountains and though they were away from 'civilization' they indeed were. The tales say that the dwellers here were originally human,but due to their nature were blessed by the spirits. They began to grow gems which highlighted their most dominant trait.The gems would grow from their starting point outwards leaving a type of shell over the area.Red was the passion of a warrior, Blue was the calm mind of a general, Purple was the cunning of the assassin, Black was the determination of a soldier and Yellow was speed of a fighter. Each with their own elemental affinity: Fire, Ice, Poison, Earth and Lightning respectively.A family could have a child with any kind of gem. Two yellows could make a blue, the gems were like a reflection of one's soul, though their were exceptions. Ruby's father was one example. His gems were yellow but he was captain of the guard and would fight against the hostile creatures in the forest.

Ruby sat up in her bed. She got a sinking feeling. Today was the day she would leave the village for a year. She was ahead of others in her classes and could better harness the energy inside her core. She found it easy to call forth the flames. She needed only to focus on her father. Ruby was never one to hide her emotions, though many times she had tried. Her emotions governed her decisions and she felt that it was best that way. She believed that her flames were an extension of her emotions be it anger or passion, they would always remain true. Usually one waited till they were an adult before leaving the village but she had been chosen as their scout. Scouts were people who left the village often and kept the village up to date on what was going on out there. The village wasn't without its dangers. They had been blessed but they believed that the dark creatures that lived on the outskirts of the village were cursed by the spirits. These creatures were immune to physical attacks but certain things could touch them. The creatures could be hurt by magic and things endowed with magic. And so they often found themselves fighting the creatures. They didn't want to leave the mountains since that may persuade the beasts to move as well and they knew they may be the only ones prepared for the creatures. Ruby walked past the many houses and stopped at the slightly larger building at the village center. The village elder was old and one could tell since she was almost completely covered in dark gems.She no longer spoke but she nodded at Ruby and pointed her to the forest. Ruby kept walking she had decided to leave early, if she waited for her dad to wake she might find herself staying. She went through the gate and a red glow enveloped her and she was in a place with snow. The gate had spat her out at random. She sighed and trudged down the mountain.
