The World Martial Arts Tournament!
What began as a humble collection of martial arts practitioners and masters to determine who was truly the greatest martial artist on the Earth in centuries past has slowly morphed over time into an irreplaceable cultural institution. Surviving largely uninterrupted in a triennial format after the seventh World Martial Arts Tournament, where such a number was decided on it has morphed from simply a spectacle of martial skill to one which serves as an athletic competition like no other, a martial arts tournament, a way to get your business shown through endorsements to the entire world – and for the martial arts factions which secretly and not-so-secretly exist across the world, to promote their brand and the power of their students.
While some may have believed the premier tournament would have been derailed with the hostilities at play between the Demon Kingdoms, Piccolo Daimao's Kingdom, and the rest of the world – it has instead transitioned to be both a sport competition and as a cold war method of showing the power and capabilities of the martial artists which one has at their call.
Looking at the footage of the previous tournaments, one can see how things have slowly changed. First in the allowance of Demons and Namekians under the sway of the Demon King Piccolo Daimao as participants. Secondly the allowance of weapon users, such as samurai and gunslingers. The WMAT rules council steadily increased options for those who would be participants, modernizing the tournament in some ways while keeping it strictly classic in others. Weapons might be used, androids and demons might even be able to be entered – but you can still lose a match by landing your feet on the grass outside of the matches ring or trying to attack your opponent ahead of a match.
It is a tournament of skill and strength, of guile and gallantry. The tournament where the Greatest Martial Artist under the Heavens is crowned. It is not something that can be just ignored – and it is coming in two years. The 151st World Martial Arts Tournament.
What does it mean to me, as a player?
1) You can enter one of your characters into each of the available World Martial Arts Divisions. You may also enter your PC into a 'team division' and a 'solo division' that they would otherwise qualify for. The PL numbers are subject to change closer to launch.
2) The Site will be moving forward with a 2 year time skip. Players who do not wish for their characters to age in this time do not have to, using the 'Kid Goku' excuse of not knowing how to count (you don't have to actually do that, but if you intend to use this exception, it is called the Kid Goku exception).
3) All new player characters created before the first match of the world martial arts tournament will be getting a bulk package of 10,000 EP, 10 MP, 300,000 Zeni, and 2,000 PL. This is for player characters who currently have new player bonuses in effect since the sign up is now open.
4)In addition, players will be able to apply a bonus to up to 3 threads per character that occur 'during the time skip', where they will be able to apply a pair of 10,000 word Coupon as a bonus. These coupons may only be used in threads set during the 'time skip' leading up to the WMAT, as an incentive to make players write their 'road to the tournament arc' for their particular character. The milk delivery episode wasn't filler, after all! All time skip threads for 'pre' 'during' and 'post' must be started before the first match, you do not have to complete them before signing up, but you will not be able to use them prior to sign up.
5) Players will be expected to list threads in the interim before the WMAT begins as 'Pre-Timeskip', 'Timeskip', or 'Current Era'.
What divisions are there?
The WMAT is split into five ‘divisions’ for the purposes of player entry, with maybe seven in character divisions covering things which don’t apply to the players (power levels of extremely low level or like say, junior/child’s divisions).
(7 Star Class aka Junior Division) - Junior Division, aka the ‘children’s division’. This has both an age and a power level limit. No one wants a ten year old with 2K PL punching around a five year old with a 10 PL.
(6 Star aka Regular Division) - The first ‘teenagers and adults’ division, this has a power level limit but little beyond that, and is meant for promising students of martial arts schools who have not yet become masters. Characters who are below 100 PL/offscreen NPCs. No PCs will be allowed in this division.
(5 Star Class aka Journeyman Division) - The first division which solo player characters should be dealing with on an intimate level. Has a power level cap of 9,000 we’ll say.
(4 Star Class aka Limited Team Division) - Teams of up to three martial artists, who as a total group cannot have a higher power level than thirty or forty thousand power level.
(3 Star Class aka Master Division) - This is the middle level solo ‘player character involved’ division, and has a power level cap of 20,000 PL.
(2 Star Class aka Unlimited Class Team Division) - Teams of up to two martial artists, who as a total group have no limit. Out of character, we might modify things, or this group might actually be more fun as a ‘random selection’ team, where two people who would otherwise qualify for the WMAT are randomly partnered up as teammates before the WMAT begins.
(1 Star Class aka Unlimited Division) - No power level maximum, this is where the strongest solo player characters (and non-player character combatants) will show up. It’s also the most noted and the one closest to the original, ancient WMAT/Tenkaichi Budokai, and whereas the entire event is called the world martial arts tournament, only the 1 star class is called the ‘Tenkaichi Budokai’ by modern watchers, despite that not being its official name. |
How does a character gain entry?
Method 1- Individual Players may participate against randomly created opponents using a modified version of the Bounty system.
Before any opponents are generated, roll a 1d4 4 times (if entering the Silver Class (15k PL and below) ) or 1d4+1d2 4 times (if entering in the Gold Class, which has no limit on PL). Each roll is a separate opponent and every point of the result is 25% of the PC's total EP, Zeni, and PL.
PCs must win 3 matches without more than 2 losses to get in through the method. On the 3rd loss, a PC is barred from entering via this method this year.
Players may agree to join the ‘NPC opponent running pool’ to run an NPC opponent for someone else’s match in both the preliminaries and the first round of the WMAT, doing so automatically increases your number of wins by 1 for the method 1 entry bracket.
Method 2- WMAT Master Class Sponsored invite - Characters possessing 10 or more Reputation Points are automatically entered in the WMAT should they wish.
Method 3- Joining a canon faction and learning their sig tech, or belonging to your own faction that is allied with a canon faction and learning a sig tech of your own.
Method 4- WMAT Entry Lottery: Roll a 1d100. On. a 1 or a 100 you are invited.
Method 5- Sponsor yourself into a sponsored invite! That is to say, pay for entry, follow the below chart:
100,000 Zeni, and 4000 words written actually donating the money/sponsoring something for the WMAT or an organization in its name allows you to enter the Four Star Class. You may NOT pay EP to not do the words, and you will get personal saga rewards for the words as if you soloed the personal saga.
25,000 Zeni and 1000 words written actually donating the money/sponsoring something for the WMAT and/or an organization in its name allows you to enter the Three Star Class. You may NOT pay EP to not do the words, and you will get personal saga rewards for the words as if you soloed the personal saga.
Method 6- IC, participants of the 4 star battle may choose their teammates. These teammates do not have to otherwise have qualified for the WMAT, though the teammates do have to agree to join.
Method 7- All new player characters (those who are 5,000 PL or below) will automatically be entered into the WMAT, but will be entered in the bottom division for Player Characters, also known as the ‘Journeyman Division’. In addition, every staff member will pick one PC on the site and ‘sponsor’ them by a team, faction, or just fancy NPC sponsorship of the participant. Said sponsored PC will qualify for the corresponding division(s) their character qualifies for.
How will the WMAT be run? How are you going to prevent GM burn out?
Player vs Player bouts are self-explanatory, but where these things always get hung up are the Non-player character vs player characters bouts and when matches don’t end at the same time. We’ll solve this through several methods:
1- Firstly a strict 48 reply limit for players before their turn is forfeited within a match, down from the 72 hours that are technically allowed in the rules for all battles. Anyone who misses this reply limit for 3 turns in a row is disqualified.
2- Players will be encouraged to volunteer to run one of the battles for the NPCs that staff have drawn up, potentially even coming up with the NPC build themselves. All players will get ‘floating’ rewards which can be applied to any of their characters should they do this, with the rewards equalling double what the NPC would have gained for the match and players do not have to have an active character on the site at the moment to do it.
3- In character, the matches won’t be concurrent, that is to say they will not be occurring at the same time or so near in time that there is not time for roleplay in between. Players will be able to send their characters on personal sagas with others in the grounds, enjoy the facilities which exist on the WMAT grounds, or Papaya City around the WMAT. They’ll even be able to role play their characters enjoying some of the Southern Island sunshine on the beach or at one of the WMAT’s hot springs, should they wish.
