"For every man there is a cause which he would gladly die for. Slay this body, and purge this soul. My ambition cannot be stopped."
Name: Nullian Series 09.C-z6, model 17-9, documented alias "Null" (formerly Dr. Archimedes Everlost)
Species: Android (Full)
Age: 6 months (apparent age "32") (true age "87")
Gender: Male
Appearance:
It is said the windows are the eyes to the soul. One glance into Null's eyes reveals there is nothing to behold: They are dark, soulless orbs, a void expanse of nothing, having long since resigned his soul to nothingness in exchange for perpetual life. He bears a rather handsome profile boasting the model-like looks that comes with a flawless, manufactured visage. His dark hair is slicked back, not a single hair out of place. An arrogant smirk semi-permanently plastered to his lips.
He stands at a height of six feet, two inches. He has a slight build with low musculature, yet despite this, possesses great physical strength and durability enhanced via artificial means. He boasts a pale, almost pasty complexion that compliments his darker looks.
As a symbol of his artificial (and therefore immutable) purity, he wears an all white, slim fit outfit that consists of a long sleeved uniform trimmed in black, over which he wears yet another long trench-like coat with a high collar. It is reminiscent of a scientist's lab coat, yet designed to provide ample protection from weather or physical harm—the coat lined, woven, and dyed white of katchin fibers.
Personality:
Null believes he is destined to rule. Where the masses may construct his fortress matters little, and where his presiding throne dwells is of no consequence. All that matters is that he become the sole deity the world comes to revere and worship for he is the perfection of man's greatest achievements—an artificial wonder.
He seeks to always control his environment, looking to gain a hold or advantage over an institution, a location, and most often, impressionable souls who will look to him for their preservation and instruction. He is not cruel to others by any means; his condescending nature is not meant as a slight to anyone else, but birthed from a genuine belief that upon being reborn in his new form, he is perfection and incapable of wrong.
This leads to a certain hubris quite unbecoming to man or machine, and as an android, serves only to further alienate him from the surrounding populace. Seeking control, Null often tightens the reins, becoming oppressive and restrictive in his desire to maintain such order and structure. Nevertheless, this flawed outlook is often redeemed by his natural charm and charisma in dealing with others who can hardly deny his chivalrous flair and gentlemanly nature (outside of conflict, of course.)
Null is a brilliant android, retaining all of the genius and knowledge of his former self. He does not see reality in its various shades and colors: he views life in lieu of his core components: everything composed of matter and energy, subjected and influenced by both time and space. It is these intricate threads of existence he seeks relentlessly, seeking to unravel the very mysteries of the universe itself.
He does not believe in the gods, nor in beings that would rule any notion of an afterlife. For him the universe is grand mystery to be explored, gained, and understood. One would use such eldritch knowledge to then manipulate and control reality, bending it to their very whim. Notions such as fate and luck are superstitious and unfounded—he uses his great brilliance and insatiable curiosity to learn all that he can about the world, its varying climates and cultures, and the very underpinnings that hold the whole of existence together.
History:
Dr. Archimedes Everlost. Such a polarizing name had a polarizing effect on all those who considered themselves pursuers of knowledge, the great many scientists, engineers, and inventors of the present age. At a young age, he was considered a wunderkind: a young man who seemed possessed of an insatiable desire to push every boundary in science and discovery. Despite this, his ideas of pushing man to the pinnacle of his natural evolution were largely dismissed—many of his ideas were just theoretical in nature, and unable to be submitted to hypothetical scrutiny via experimentation. This created in Archimedes a sense of loss; a void in himself that could not be filled, and doubt as to his whether he would realize his desire to shape the course of Earth itself. So many threats existed to their very survival, and Archimedes sought to ensure humanity remained at the pinnacle.
Perhaps if he were honest with himself, he would have realized that it was his own hubris and arrogance that drove his colleagues away. His own dangerous ideas of man becoming deity, or something close to it. But Archimedes would not have believed this to be truth. It was not his own shortcomings, but the short-sighted nature of the scientific community that posed a problem; a conundrum that needed to be solved. He eventually sought employment with the Capsule Corporation, yet due to his dangerous ideals and notoriety that proceeded him, he and his projects were often turned down by the mega corporation.
Capsule Corp, while not the only innovative name in terms of futuristic engineering and scientific breakthrough, became synonymous with hardship in his mind. The company refused to acknowledge his brilliance, while at the same time, those who were lucky enough to be employed by the tech giant often pointed out Dr. Everlost's many shortcomings and failures rather than acknowledging his many accolades, achievements, and forward thinking academic journals. He came to realize the tech giant had no intention of standing aside so that his brilliance may continue to grow.
But one cannot cull his ambition. He sought private funding from many proprietors: individuals who thought the same as he did in terms of humanity's place amongst the stars. He managed to gather a group of investors to fund his research, building himself a laboratory sequestered in a secret location within the Southern Islands. He pursued his studies, and continued to promote his findings online even as dissenting opponents refuted him and sought to largely discredit any milestones he happened to reach.
It all came to a head when Archimedes spent millions of zeni, not to mention precious time and effort, in the culmination of what he thought to be the pinnacle of robotics—an android model, the Nullian series, designed to house the full consciousness of a human mind in the effort to prolong one's sustainable life when, as his own body had, they grew old and tired and frail. He presented this in a final glorious presentation before his investors, yet unfortunately, many of them grew tired of not receiving their desired results from him. Many were now backing Capsule Corp instead, and the revelation that his project was being shut down and defunded pushed the scientist to his breaking point.
It became crystal clear to him. He was incapable of living long enough, or achieving the level of accumulated knowledge necessary, to shape and manipulate the world in the manner he so desperately sought. Nor would he ever have the respect of his colleagues, or Capsule Corp, as a whole if he could not break through his current boundaries. It was a stark revelation, but a necessary one. And how does one solve a grand issue such as this? It seemed his construction of an ultimate android model was more than a whim—it was gospel.
With the assistance of a single faithful investor and a loyal laboratory drone, Archimedes underwent his most dangerous experiment yet—he vacated his body through the transference of his consciousness into the android model he had constructed. There was great risk involved, not to mention it was highly illegal and unethical a practice, but he was willing to risk it all if it meant a perpetual eternity by which to accomplish his goals. The transference was a success, though there were many months of operation in a low-power state as his mind adjusted to his new, more perfect shell.
He no longer wanted to be known as that failure of a doctor, Archimedes Everlost. Instead, he would be known by a new moniker, taking after the namesake of his android model. He would be known as Null.
RP Sample:
"You... you've actually done it."
Null stood before the full length mirror in small, cramped lab space. He arched a single eyebrow, dark eyes shifting to glance briefly at his colleague. "Why does that surprise you? Have you ever doubted my initative, Boardman?"
The young bespectacled man stood with hands held behind his back, staring at the android in quiet reverence. Though his expression remained passive, Null could only imagine the inner exuberant joy he must have felt to know that his time, money, and reputation were no longer in jeopardy. They had proven what they started out to—that man could ascend his fleshly coil and natural limitations. Man could become more than the sum of his measly parts.
"Of course not," Boardman quietly asserted.
A soft smirk tugged at the corners of Null's lips. He continued to regard himself in the mirror. This was far more preferable to the dying form he previously inhabited. He felt young and strong again, full of vibrancy and hope. Thoughts and calculations swirled and ebbed in his mind at rapid speeds he never thought possible; he could ponder several things all at once, providing equal care and attention to them all.
He was beyond human now.
Null glanced down at his pale, slender hands. They appeared delicate, as if they had not seen a single day of work. He closed them into tight fists that bespoke a strength he never possessed in his previous life. If he wanted, he could reach out and crush Boardman's skull with minimal effort. The white clothing suited him—it was starched and pressed, spotless and without blemish. Much like himself now.
"I'm quite pleased with these results. Perhaps if your loyalty and money remain, my friend, we can consider funding a body for you as well." Null turned, smiling as he placed a placating hand upon the young man's shoulder. "I'd be more than happy to share this achievement with you."
Boardman nodded, showing the first hint of excitement at the prospect. The fool.
"So... it has been six months, Archimedes. Isn't it time to venture out into the world and see what your new model can truly do?"
"Firstly, never refer to me by that name again." His dark eyes flashed with something malevolent, though his smile remained calm. "And second, isn't it obvious what must now take place? We must ensure that Capsule Corp rues the day they sought to belittle me. We must show the world that we are the rightful heirs, and establish a dynasty that will last an eternity."
It would be glorious indeed. "It is time to finally make our mark upon this world. But we will need many allies and resources. Never forget, Boardman—no man, nor machine, is an island unto himself."
"Certainly not."
Of course, the young rich man agreed. He was but a puppet on a string, possessed of all the opportunity yet lacking the fortitude and genius to see any of his own ambitions fulfilled. That worked quite well for Null. He would provide the guiding vision, and use this man to his own ends. Him and all others who sought to follow the android's example.
Yes... this was a glorious awakening, indeed.
