He possesses the strength and social grace of an ox. A powerful beast who has been muzzled so long, without the controlling bit of his Tuffle masters in his mouth, he has not the first clue how to engage with others. He's of the gruff, rough-and-tumble variety of home bred Saiyan that dominated Planet Vegeta many centuries ago.
His greatest motivations are his pride and his honor as a Saiyan. Try as they might, the Tuffles could never succeed in erasing the memory engraved deep within his genes, and much of Barlei's thoughts and actions are intricately motivated by one or the other. He lives by the code of survival of the fittest—he is always willing to test himself against others in order to grow stronger.
Long gone are the days of fighting for the glory and expansion of the Saiyan race. He no longer feels the deep love and connection of his family, loved ones, and community, all of which has been dead for many centuries. He bears his strength, pride, and honor as his most potent weapon, though in truth they are but a shield to guard his lonely heart.
He craves the familial unity of his Saiyan brothers and sisters, and the flourishing community he once loved and enjoyed. Loneliness is a bitter foe not even his great strength can overcome, and he is often prone to melancholic discourses about an age long past. Barlei fears he will never belong in this age or this world, and every manner of rival or foe felled at his hand is but an odd-shaped piece desperate to fit into the grand puzzle again.
History:
Barlei was the quintessential soldier. Strong, brave, and possessed of a mind for strategy, it had not taken this son of two lowly traders long to escape the bindings of his low and humble birth and ascend through the ranks as one of the Saiyan race's most respected professions. He soon became leader of his squad, and beyond that, lieutenant of an entire platoon of ground soldiers.
He and the men he commanded were sent to engage their old foes upon the front lines of battle—the resurging Tuffles who sought to subjugate the Saiyans and exact revenge against them. Barlei fought tooth and nail, inspiring his men and repelling the advance of the enemy forces time and time again. Soon, the Tuffles adapted a different strategy.
A large scale assault would be launched and serve as a distraction. When Barlei and his men were sent to quell the violence, the Tuffles would attack defenseless border towns and encampments, killing many and enslaving the weak and powerless. Sickened by such a display of underhanded treachery and cowardice, Barlei disobeyed orders and abandoned the front lines.
Though he succeeded in intercepting and rescuing some of his captured brethren, many of the Tuffles escaped with their prisoners in tow. Worse yet, without their fearless leader, the Saiyan ranks were thrown into disarray and the Tuffles overwhelmed them once their reinforcements arrived. This led to the loss of many, many lives—unnecessary sacrifice had his pride been simply kept in check and he followed orders.
Never had such a rage filled him. Seeing red, he tore into the enemy ranks all by himself. It was no glorious moment of redemption or warrior's death he craved—once more, his rash actions were met with swift and cruel abandonment by his superiors and with no help to come, he was brutally beaten and captured by the Tuffles and shipped to one of their many testing facilities.
Much like his brethren, he was experimented on. They took everything from him: his blood, his hair, and his strength and left him but a hollow shell of his former self. Some were defiant and led insurrections, yet Barlei remained a docile captive in his single man pod. He deigned not to bite the hand that choked him, for he had caused enough death and misery.
One day, all of that changed. There was news about uprisings at various holding facilities all over Planet Earth. It inspired many of his brothers and sisters, and they fought tooth and nail like never before to be free from their cages. During the mass revolt, his cryo stasis pod was damaged and he was released from captivity. Seeing his brethren fight and die for their freedom, tears filled his eyes.
He tore the subjugation collar from his neck and dove into the fray, decimating the enemy that sought to swarm them in droves. He fought and fought, minutes bled into hours, and hours into days. Perhaps the Tuffles retreated. Perhaps they were all dead. Perhaps they had no more machines to deploy. Whatever the reason, one day, the enemy stopped coming.
It was then Barlei realized for the first time in centuries, he was finally free. Upon their escape, they were routed by reinforcements, and Barlei was separated from the others. Running for his life, he vowed to one day reunite with his Saiyan brethren, but not before he grew stronger and possessed an overwhelming strength that nothing could stand again.
Then, and only then, could he atone for the mistakes of his past. Though he was a long lost relic of a time immemorial, he would herald in a new era of Saiyan dominance and expansion upon Earth. He would establish a new Kingdom. He would have his family again.

The electric baton let out a sizzling crack as it slammed into his ribs, releasing a jolt in his body that left him numb from pain. It threatened to bring the man to his knees, yet pride kept him on his feet.
Pride was all that he had left. The last barrier to be stripped from him, to break his will and crush his spirit. The scientists and engineers didn't understand; an abstract concept such as pride could be stripped if one gained such an emotion through an accomplishment. But when pride and honor were as much a part of your existence as breathing, only death would cause such pride to cease.
The defiant smirk on his lips remained a testament to that.
The baton met his flesh again, and it elicited a scream as it tore from Barlei's lips. He crumpled to the cold steel floor, naked and shivering in the stark light of the test room. He could not even wrap his tail around him for comfort as he often did in his youth. That was one of the first things they took from him. One by one, his layers were stripped away with each painful test, each intruding probe, and each forced exhibition where he was made to fight against his own brethren.
But this final layer would remain. Even if he had the strength to give it up, he would find that he could not. It was not a matter of pride that fueled his continued stoic defiance.
They could not strip what resided deep within his soul.
But they would surely try.
