The flat of her blade bounced off the top of Isaac's head. It put a stop to the whirlwind assault, which was the purpose of her attack. Nao landed gingerly, wincing at the pain in her ankle. The restorative medicine she took was doing its job—she was breathing easier now, and the pain was starting to dull already. More of her energy was restored to her as well.
A slight buzzing energy thrummed through her being. It made her feel antsy and courageous all at once.
Maybe she could do this.
Maybe it wasn't impossible to believe she could defeat this... man-thing or whatever he was. All she needed was to demonstrate a little courage!
The change happened almost instantly—her body nearly doubled in height and maturity. Was it some sort of strange magic? It was difficult to say, but her clothing and weapon changed with her as well. Soon the being would find himself staring down a middle-aged looking woman with feline ears and a thick bushy tail that swished anxiously behind her.
Her eyes boasted a fire that wouldn't be quenched. It was the Hero's Flame within her, roused to life by Isaac's irate statements as he charged at her, his fist cocked and ready to attack.
It came surging toward her. Nanao raised her blade to block the punch, but the sword was knocked from her hand, dislodging the weapon as it went skittering across the ground. He stood between her and her blade. There was no way she could get at it now. It called for a shift in tactics.
"Fine. Then let me show you what I can do."
Her magenta aura flared to life around her, flickering wildly about her form like a flame. A different Nanao stood before him then—full of confidence and unwavering in the truth of her conviction.
She thrust her hands out before her and focused. Magenta light flickered to being before her, growing in size and power until it formed a large sphere that encased both of her hands. She wasn't at all accustomed to ki blasts like this once, but if she hoped to have any chance of winning this, she would be forced to adapt her strategy.
"Take this!"
A beam of crackling energy erupted from her hands as it sailed toward Isaac.
