Skills & Statistics
When participating in combat on Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny, there are two very important sets of values that determine how potent your character’s combat potential is. These are known as Skills and Statistics. Skills are the core abilities of your character that serve the same sort of role as things like “Strength”, “Dexterity”, and “Constitution” in games like Dungeons and Dragons. Skills determine your base Accuracy, Defense, and HP values-- these values are known as your “Statistics” or “Stats” for short.
Skills
Skills are the base physical traits about your character. They represent things like how strong of a fighter you are, how resilient to damage you, and quickly or athletically you can move. In Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny, there are FOUR skills. These four skills are used to calculate all of your Statistics, or Stats, listed further below. It is important not to get the two confused. When a player creates their character, they begin with 30 points to spread among their Skills however they would like. Skills do have an upward cap, representing the mortal limitations of power. You may encounter god-like characters with stats higher than this, but since every character on Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny is mortal, you may not increase any skill beyond 50 except in instances or with abilities that specifically state otherwise. If a trait, mastery, item, or technique says you may raise a skill, but does not specifically mention this cap, assume that the cap still applies.
The Four Skills in Dragon Ball: Broken Destiny are:
Fighting
This represents your practical combat experience and knowledge of general Martial Arts. A high fighting skill can represent formal training at a dojo, an innate understanding of the body and its movements, a past of street fighting or even professional sports like boxing or wrestling. Your "Fighting" skill does not represent your physical strength, or imply someone with a lower fighting score is weaker than you.
Effect: Each point in Fighting increases the Accuracy of your Melee Attacks by 1. Every 20 points in your Fighting Skill increases your damage modifier with all attacks that target an opponent by +1.
EX. If Goku has 35 Fighting, he will receive +35 Accuracy with all of his melee physical attacks, and +1 damage to all attacks.
If Vegeta has 41 Fighting, he will receive +41 Accuracy with all of his melee physical attacks, and +2 damage to all attacks.
Energy Control
This is your ability to manipulate ki and exercise fine control over that ki. A high energy control skill may indicate someone who meditates often, is very spiritually connected, or even a highly religious individual. Those with high energy control are often capable of much more precise ki attacks, like a Destructo Disc or a Dodon Ray, while those with less energy control tend to use larger, more explosive attacks.
Effect: Each point in Energy Control increases the Accuracy of your Ranged Attacks by 1. Every 20 points in your Energy Control Skill reduces the ki cost of all techniques by -1 ki, to a minimum of 1 ki.
EX. If Piccolo has 25 Energy Control, he will receive +25 Accuracy with all of his ranged energy attacks, and all his of ki costs will be reduced by 1.
If Tien has 45 Energy Control, he will receive +45 Accuracy with all of his ranged energy attacks, and all of his ki costs will be reduced by 2.
Reflexes
This is your awareness, coordination, and agility. A high reflexes skill may represent someone who is adept at flips, does parkour, was a sports star, dancer, martial artist, or skateboarder. It may also an unusual intuition, getting a "weird feeling" that helps you avoid danger. It may also be a mental indicator, as someone who can out think an opponent, and thus, predict their moves in advance.
Effect: Each point in Reflexes increases your base Defense by 1.
EX. If Frieza has a Reflexes value of 30, he would increase his base Defense from 50 to 80.
Resilience
This represents your endurance, pain tolerance, and willpower. Resilience is the ability to keep going after taking a beating, so someone who is especially tough headed, or strong willed, will often have a high resilience skill. It may also represent being de-sensitized to pain by an extreme workout or training regimen. It could also represent some degree of natural armor or a unique body chemistry that increases your ability to soak a hit.
Effect: Each point in Resilience increases your HP by 1. Every 20 points in your Resilience skill increases your natural Damage Reduction(DR) by +1.
EX. If Majin Buu has a Resilience skill of 30, he would increase his base HP from 50 to 80, and would get +1 DR.
Statistics
Statistics, or “Stats” for short, are values that are used in battle. Most Stats are derived from your Skill values, but may be modified by other effects such as Traits or Items. These are the most important values to keep track of in battle, as misrepresenting them or making mistakes regarding them can cause great confusion in the heat of the moment. It is the player's responsibility to accurately represent your stats in any battle. If you tell your opponent your Defense is lower than it should be, and then find out you made an error, you cannot retroactively re-apply that to posts that have already happened. If your stats are incorrect due to an error, simply inform your thread partner or GM and fix it for the next post moving forward. Math errors happen, often! That's okay! But repeatedly misrepresenting, or intentionally misrepresenting, your stats in battle, usually in a way that benefits you, is cheating and is grounds for an immediate loss.
The 5 Stats in Dragon Ball Broken Destiny are:
Accuracy
This value is what you use to determine whether or not you hit a target. When attacking, roll a d100 and add in your Energy Control or Fighting skill values, depending on the type of attack used. You may also add miscellaneous modifiers from other effects such as Techniques, Traits, or Items.
Melee Physical Attack Equation: 1d100 + Fighting Skill + Bonuses
Ranged Energy Attack Equation: 1d100 + Energy Control Skill + Bonuses
Defense
This value represents how likely you are to be hit by an attack; it is calculated by a base of 50 plus your Reflexes skill. An action’s “Accuracy” statistic(including its roll result) must meet or exceed your Defense value to hit you. Defense may also be increased by miscellaneous modifiers from other effects.
Defense Equation: 50 + Reflexes Skill + Bonuses
HP
An abbreviation of “Hit Points”, this value determines how much damage you can sustain before your character is incapacitated. This value is calculated as 50 plus your Resilience value and may be increased by modifiers from other effects. Once you reach 0 HP, your character may no longer fight, meaning you have “lost” the battle. Having 0 HP does not automatically mean that your character has been killed. There are many kinds of battles that do not result in death, and even in battles where death is an option, your opponent may choose not to kill an opponent at 0 HP!
HP Equation: 50 + Resilience Skill + Bonuses
Ki
This value represents your energy reserves and is the primary resource for performing techniques. Your base Ki value is 100 and may not be restored beyond this during battle unless you possess certain traits or items that increase your base Ki value. You begin each battle with a full Ki pool. When you reach 0 Ki, you become Exhausted. While Exhausted, your base PL is decreased by 50% and you cannot use any Standard Actions on your turn. Passive regeneration of Ki from class traits or traits is not active when you are exhausted. You are no longer Exhausted when your Ki goes above 0.
DR
An abbreviation of “Damage Reduction”, this value determines how much damage you reduce from incoming attacks. DR is applied per-opponent rather than per-attack, except in cases that specify otherwise; you may apply DR only once per turn, per opponent. For example, if you were going to take 20 damage from a single opponent and possessed 5 DR, you would instead take only 15 damage from that opponent during that turn.
Power Level
Your Power Level (PL) is a representation of your character’s overall power. When two characters meet, their PL is a good basis to determine who immediately "feels stronger," although that may change as they activate techniques or transformations. When you first create a character, you gain a starting PL based on your RP Sample, and is raised by writing words and completing threads. In battle, Power Level determines your Edge level versus your opponents. This is determined per-opponent based on a comparison between your Current Power Level and their Current Power Level. You may read more about this in the Power Level and Edge rules.
