General Cerola sat back at her desk aboard the Mobile Command Centre that had been affectionately nicknamed "Blue Thunder". The armoured vehicle was now traveling in an armed convoy from Satan City in the South, to the fabled West City, home of the ubiquitous Capsule Corp. This detachment's purpose was simple, to bring the general to answer a call to combat. The odds were that she would be crushed, given she had only her personal capabilities to rely on. And even counting the special modifications to her genes - which not even the Tuffle constituents of the Dragoons were fully aware of - she harboured no illusions of what fate awaited her at that tournament. But she understood the purpose behind this was to observe all these martial artists, and taste their powers firsthand. And a firsthand experience, while not precisely scientific, was key to this. Scouters could watch these warriors and record their combat all they wanted. But to face them head to head was training in itself, preparation of her own mentality. With regards to getting there, mobility was not an issue for someone like the general. After all, short of flying under her own power, she was very capable of taking a dropship to West City. But in this particular instance, she would prefer to take the scenic route. As the rolling great plains passed by outside the transparisteel windows, her thoughts turned back to events a whole lifetime ago. When she wasn't the leader of a rogue battalion of mercenaries, nor a member of a secretive conspiracy bent on revenge. Not even when she was a general desperately fighting a rapidly degrading war for her race's very survival. No... in those days, she was a young Colonel, eager to serve her nation, close to the beginning of that very war. The second year of a grueling twenty... Age 321, Battle of Remonedo, Planet Plant Operation: Coldfang<<Are you positive, Sir?>> Colonel Cerola, decked in full power armour, save for her helmet, tightened her grip around her headset's left earpiece. The dropship's turbines were loud, and the journey shaky, particularly since the cargo hold was full of sedated Sayain specimens. Women, children, the elderly... She had been doing this on a much smaller scale for a number of years now. Covert operations performed in the middle of the night, or in broad daylight under the guidance of the EyeSat Network. Individual stragglers, the lost, and such. Abducted and blamed on the vicious Whitefangs that acted in a similar manner to pick off the weak. Since the war began in earnest, however, the abductions had become overt, and even more brazen. The TSE required more subjects for experimentation, the brass said. And so, the 17th Mobile Warfare Division, of which the Iron Dragoons were a part, followed their orders. <<Sky Marshal's orders, I'm afraid,>> somewhere inside a fortified bunker underneath the city in the distance, Major General Gosteen responded to the inquiry. His voice was academic, nasal, almost condescending. A pencil pusher with no experience on the field, he was nevertheless a master of logistics. Logistics which, he would never forget to remind his peers, was responsible for winning wars. As such it was only understandable that she would serve with little question. But even then, this was a bit unusual. <<The Steel Riders cannot return to base with that lunatic monkey on their tails.>><<Why would he break ranks so quickly?>> The general had described him as an elite, a commander, by the look of things, who had appeared from nowhere to interfere with the abduction operations. Odd that he would do such a thing, especially given his men were caught in the middle of combat with multiple divisions of the recently mechanised powered infantry. <<Oh, who knows? Maybe he's a big softie at heart or something.>> The condescension reached its apex. She could imagine him waving his hands dismissively. <<We must get as many subjects as possible. The TSE requires them to win the war. You're our best Airmobile commander. Neutralise this threat to the operation. Better yet, capture him. An elite would prove an excellent test subject.>><<Understood, General. I'll capture this elite.>><<Good. I knew I could count on you. Get too it, then. CANNERY out.>>Cerola adjusted her earpiece as the transmission ended, and issued her orders. Of the dozen or so dropships in her immediate vicinity, two would transfer their cargo, distributing it among the other ten, and then turn around to intercept the elite harassing the Steel Riders. The process was completed with haste and efficiency, and in a matter of minutes, they were on their way to intercept their target. As the power level appeared on her scouter, Cerola thought more about why he was doing this. The answer was obvious... he was weak. Too weak to see his mission through and prioritise his orders over his feelings. She wouldn't be surprised if his men would suffer for his crass mistake. Now the only question was if he would pay for this mistake out on the field against his enemies, or after the battle, from his superiors... WC: 856 @null

It was his platoon's first taste of defeat. His first taste of despair. The enemy before Barlei, decked out in their powered armor, resembled little more than tin cans—easily crushed underfoot. They engaged the enemy head-on with the full brunt of their Saiyan might. His men were consumed before his eyes, little more than fuel-soaked kindling doused in unquenchable flames.
Their dying screams filled his ears. He could do nothing. But he could stop their brethren—his brethren—from being taken. He owed that much to his men, and to their families.
Barlei flew toward the nearest village, certain he would encounter the enemy. He saw their convoys leaving. He pursued like a demon straight from hell. Tears came unbidden and filled his eyes. Rushing wind tore past his face, snatching his laments and tossing them carelessly upon the wind. There was no room for sentiment—it was weakness, pure and simple. He needed strength to overcome these odds. The wind whipped his long hair about his dirt-and-blood streaked face, and he clutched an injured arm protectively against his ribs. His battle armor was cracked and smoldering from that devastating energy barrage that claimed his men's lives. The pain wanted him to retreat into hiding, lick his wounds, and live to fight another day.
He refused to yield.
He could see the rear most convoy. His aura flared wildly as he flew toward it, uninjured arm outstretched, fingers clasping desperately to unyielding steel. He gripped the door and ripped it from its hinges. He found nothing inside—an empty decoy. A primal scream of rage tore from his throat.
The explosion could be seen for miles all around. Barlei propelled through the smoke and debris like a rocket in hot pursuit of his enemy.

Engines whined to an even greater noise as two Dropships, Javelin-01 and -04, respectively, took off at maximum velocity in the direction of the Steel Riders. Reports streamed in through the BattleNet and into Cerola's Scouter, and it was a simple matter to isolate the data coming in from the vicinity of the Riders' area of operations. <<Mojo-22 has been compromised and neutralised,>> she passed the news along to her men. <<It's only a matter of time before he either catches up to Mojo-21 and does the same, or realizes that all the Mojos are fakes and takes after Javelin Third. Paya, what's our ETA?>>The pilot quickly checked the nav points on his Scouter HUD before answering. <<Give or take five, Colonel.>> At the rate they were going, the trip wasn't going to be all too long. The thrusters could only move them so quickly without going suborbital, and that was for long-range purposes. If they tried that, they would overshoot the target by hundreds of klicks. <<Understood,>> the Colonel took this time to speak to her troops. <<We've engaged with space pirates, insurrectionists, and the occasional space monster. We've dispatched low class Saiyan village guards and captured scores of their weak like prey. We've even survived a few tangles with their mid-class warriors. But now, we're about to face an elite. We've heard the stories. We've read the data. They are the Saiyan Army's most powerful warriors.>>She paused briefly to look each one in the face. Their helmets were all on, fully enclosing their heads. But no doubt they could see the cold determination in her eyes through their receptors. <<He will go down like the rest of them. We will put him in chains like the subjects we had in the cargo hold just a few minutes ago. Against superior power, superior tactics will prevail.>>Her commlink burst to life with a hardy chorus of war cries acknowledging her declaration. It was amazing what a decade of live combat could do to condition a naturally pacifistic species. <<Treat this as any other mission. I expect no heroics. I need not remind you that we are to proceed by the numbers. The cooler head will win. But most importantly, I demand victory!>>Another collective war cry of affirmation. <<Now gird yourselves in iron, my Dragoons. Because today, we face our greatest challenge!>> Cerola ended her speech and put on her helmet. <<Storm clouds of fire and steel!>> She beat the left side of her chest with a fist as she recited the first half of the prayer. <<Death from above! Make the enemy kneel!>> Every last Dragoon in the group responded in unison, from the troops in the transport bay, to the pilot, to those in the other dropship, repeating with the same action. Soon, the enemy would be in sight, and the fight would begin... Initiative: bli6NtGq1d100WC: 481/1337/2000 @null 1d100

The edges of his vision blurred as his warrior's instinct focused his sight with pinpoint accuracy. The only color he saw was red—rage filled his being as blood flowed into his eyes from a deep cut above his brow left unchecked. A thick, coppery scent filled his nose as he licked dry, chapped lips and tasted his own blood.
He was in no condition to be pursuing the enemy. Not like this. But someone had to give voice to the fallen, the weak and powerless, the destitute and newly dead. He would be a portent of doom for these accursed Tuffles waging their senseless war against a warrior race that could not be bested by pale, fragile thinkers. He had to search every single dropship until he found the right one. And kill as many of these bastards as he could!
The first ship he searched was a bust. So were the second and third, yet he left them as smoldering wreckages plummeting from smoke-filled skies, consumed in his ever growing rage. He should have been growing weaker by the second, yet all he felt was raw power pulsing through his veins. As if someone or something sought to grant him a final vestige of strength before he embraced a warrior's death. A new ship approached on the horizon. "Doesn't look like the others. I bet that's where they're keeping everyone." His jaw tensed, aura flaring in powered flight as he soared in an arc away from the closest convoy and at the larger ship. "Bastards think they can outsmart me? I'll rip their goddamn heads off!" He tore across the skies like a bat out of hell, the brilliance of his black aura trailing in his wake like the tail of a blazing comet as it hurtled toward its inevitable impact. "If I'm going down, you bastards are coming with me!"

[III]Pain numbed his mind and body, the aches of war fading in light of the challenge he faced. He felt not the wind tugging at his hair, nor the sharp jagged stab of anguish as he lifted his fractured arm and tugged his broken battle cuirass up and over his head. It fell far below and onto the ground, sinking in a small crater due to its heavy weight. Bulging muscles coated in sweat, grime, and soot rose and fell with each staggered breath he took. A pride filled grin, born of suffering, grit, and defiance plastered itself to his lips. Sorrow swelled in his heart. Sorrow tinged with fear of the eternal condition of death. Once more, the grizzled Saiyan elite had to question whether it was better to beat a hasty retreat. The enemy ship loomed like a monster before him. Massive engines roared to keep the steel bastion soaring through the skies. Weak sunlight glinted off its metallic hull, the sun setting on the distant horizon. It was not a beast he could quell, even if he had the entirety of his platoon to back him. But when had sacrifice ever been so easy? Power exploded as his ink-black aura emblazoned against twilight skies. At least the stars had come to bear witness to the end of a pathetic, low-born warrior. <<Establishing Battlefield Control... Standby...>> Colonel Cerola sat tight, strapped into her seat waiting for the Battle Control App to complete its recalibrations to the local area as she performed final checks on her MagRifle. 10mm tungsten rounds fired at a few dozen Machs should be capable of at least putting a dent in a Saiyan. The recoil of such a shot was easily mitigated by her power armour. Her men were equipped with various sorts of magnetic weapons. Some assault rifles with higher rates of fire but lower velocities. A couple with rotary cannons packing even higher rates of fire to spew rapid death in the direction of whatever was sorry enough to take their shots. A red klaxxon began to blare as the cargo bay door slid open. On either side, two hatches leading to the top of the dropship did the same. The metal harnesses undid themselves, allowing the squad to rise to action. <<ETA in 1 minute, ma'am,>> Paya announced. <<Target is inbound. Looks like we've been spotted.>><<Battle Control Online.>> Cerola's peripheral vision was filled with all the basics deemed necessary to command a tactical operation, from her men's vital signs, damage status of the dropships, a tactical map of the immediate surroundings, and most tellingly, the red dot that was quickly approaching their location. The BattleNet truly was a brilliant stroke of invention. Imagine what it would be like to wage war with no awareness of the enemy's exact whereabouts, and having to rely on isolated individual message runners from scouting parties to keep you informed. The BattleNet was one of the Tuffle Armed Services' greatest assets. <<Javelin-04, take supportive action. Lure the target away from our position to provide us with just enough prep time. Deploy your troops.>>The second dropship's CO responded with the affirmative and the action was immediate. Javelin-04 broke formation and prepared to engage the Saiyan head on. <<Razza, Chuello, mount your guns topside. I'll take the central turret.>> The colonel slapped in a fresh magazine and clipped it to her rear magnetic weapon clamps, as she stood by the steps to the hatch on the left. <<Canta, take the rear gun. Apri, take charge of the rest of them. Deploy ground side and provide supporting fire when able. Let's move!>>The squad barked in response and proceeded with cadence to their assigned directions. Cerola and her two subordinates climbed up to the top of the transport, with the colonel taking the dorsal autocannon. Though normally slaved to the pilot or a combat AI of choice, it could be placed under manual control in the right situations, such as this one. The dropship featured two additional weapon hardpoints near either wing. For combat heavy operations, they could mount additional cannons, in most cases, two heavy gunners armed with Rotary MagCannons could simply mount their weapons and do just fine. Canta took the rear door cannon, while Apri led seven other powered troops in jumping from the open cargo door. They landed in loud thudding sequence on the arid ground, kicking up vast amounts of dust as they readied their weapons and, taking their cue from the BattleNet, took aim in the general direction of the Saiyan. Cerola smirked as she watched the red dot come closer. He had the advantage now and was almost on top of them... but with superior tactics, and proper positioning, it was possible to achieve their objective to capture this elite. [III]Men dropped from the ship like flies. They bore the same powered armor and weapons as the men he encountered on the front lines. They landed far below onto the ground and aimed their weapons, locking onto his position. The cargo hatch on the large ship opened, yet instead of seeing the desperate faces of his brethren, he was met with the sight of nasty-looking armaments. A deep feeling of dread crept through his veins. This thing truly was a mobile fortress. From starboard to port, there didn't seem to be a single obvious weakness in the ship's hull. The warrior in him wanted to admire the militaristic capability of his foe. It'd be boring if the fight were easy. He could not waver, not even in the face of these revelations. He would only get one good shot before they killed him. Barlei surged forward, choosing the path of most resistance. He could feel his heart thumping in his chest, pounding against his ribcage. Any sane person would avoid a head on collision with a ship one thousand times his size, and seek to attack it from its underbelly or rear—areas where clandestine efforts would prove fruitful. They wouldn't expect a full frontal assault by a lone Saiyan. His battle experience told him as much. He let out a warrior's shot as he neared the bow of the ship. He interlocked his fingers, rearing back over his head before swinging his hands down in a double-axe handle with every ounce of might he could muster. Maybe it wouldn't do a damn thing. But it was one hell of a way to die. WC: 274 TWC: 1,106/2,000 BARLEI, SAIYAN RELICSUMMARY PHASE.

The Colonel, Razza, and Chuello opened fire as soon as the Saiyan elite was in visual range. Even before he prepared to unleash his attack. Given his close proximity to the ship, he either had to be really fast, or really tough, for such a thing to not faze him in the slightest. Either way, they unloaded magnetically propelled ferrotungsten in his general direction. The Dropship's movements weren't under their control. They had a professional in charge. Captain Paya held a few thousand sublight flight hours under his belt, and a great number of them were on this class of dropship. From raids on space pirates, to counter-insurgency operations, the occasional giant space monster, and yes, abduction operations in the years before the war went public, he'd seen the Dragoons through thick and thin. As such, it was here taking this great enemy head on was his biggest challenge yet. <<Hang on, we're in for some chop.>> With nerves of steel, the pilot tipped the dropship to one side, banking in an attempt to avoid the very nasty energy spike that was headed straight for them. It worked, partly. The right missile pod snapped open, the munitions exposed to the air. While they weren't at any risk of exploding due to their design, they would be next to useless given how the Saiyan had basically clipped the whole quiver in half. <<That's gonna leave a mark!>> Chuello quipped as he scanned through the plume and oriented his gun where it should go. He did not like the fact that smoke was flying up in his face... on the other hand, it didn't matter how bad it was. His Scouter's FCS could penetrate this cover without any problem. Bless the egghead who developed the Scouter. He was one of the true heroes of the war, even though these things had been in use to defend against wild animals for a couple of generations now. He paved the way for the TAS to refit them for combat purposes and direct interfacing with the BattleNet. Cerola and Razza were quick to lock on to the target and open fire as well. <<If he keeps this up, a 'mark' will be the least of our worries.>> the Colonel half-joked back as she swiveled the autocannon to keep it trained on the Saiyan elite. It was a tactical move for him, which shouldn't have been a surprise given how effectively they led their men in combat. Truly a foe of magnificent valour. Depending on how things turned out, perhaps they might meet each other on the battlefield again someday. That was a distant, faint hope, however. Either she would die here, or she would prevail. The former problem was obvious. The latter, not much different in practise. She knew where the Sky Marshal wanted this one. Even if by some miracle, he was released, things would not be the same. While the Colonel hoped for eventual peace, or even a truce, with the two races turning to face the Cold Force together, such a prospect was greatly dwindling with each ounce of blood shed. A true shame. However, this was the law of nature. The stronger, whether that be in power or intelligence, would prevail. And the weaker would inevitably perish. This early in the conflict, it was too early to tell which side would ultimately emerge victorious. But the sooner the war concluded before the Year of the Full Moon, the better. She knew the reports from before. Every few decades, the Saiyan Tribes and Petty Kingdoms would gather to settle their greatest disputes on the Night of the Full Moon. For at its greatest extent, the Moon would be at the maximum output of Blutz Waves, which triggered a terrifying transformation from something manlike, to a great primate beast, with power levels ten times the norm. The next one was in 18 years. The government was already making preparations for such a possibility of course. And with an end to the war nowhere in sight, she understood that it was best to prepare for that eventuality, no matter how long 18 years seemed to be. Because if she knew anything about time... it was that it consumed all things. WC:706/2595/1000 @null COLONEL CEROLA, DUTIFUL SOLDIERSUMMARY PHASE.

[IV]A lucky hit. The giant tin can listed sharply to one side in a bid to avoid the brunt of the damage, and that it accomplished but not without incurring some. The Saiyan's freakish strength tore through one of the missile ports and rendered it inert. That didn't stop the ship and its crew from returning fire as a cacophony of thundering booms filled the air. A salvo of bullets soared past Barlei as he dashed from side to side, trying to avoid the hail of gunfire. He was caught mid-air in the line of sight of several soldiers, and it was inevitable he would take some damage. A hail of impactful rounds shook his being as it slammed into his hasty guard and weakened battle armor. The armor cracked and disintegrated in places, leaving streams of blood to pour through the holes. He cried out in anguish as he flew hard to his left, getting out of the field of view of those two vicious gunners. Those bastards were pretty crackshots, even with their ship listing hard to one direction. One of them—he couldn't tell which one as the pain and fatigue heavily interfered with his senses—boasted a considerable power level. Probably an officer of some sort. Barlei thought he'd be dead after that first assault, yet the fact he still clung to life told him maybe this wasn't the end. Maybe he could make a difference. He would take down that officer if it were the last act of bravery he committed. He surged forth, this time flying beneath the rear of the dropship in the vain hopes the turrets could not turn a full 360 degrees. Letting loose another battle roar, he reared back and threw an explosive ki-fused punch toward the steel underbelly of the ship, looking to tear clean through its hull. Canta held to the mounted rear gun, eyes pinned on the HUD. On his scouter, the bright red dot rapidly approached. At Captain Paya's declaration, his grip tightened, a natural reaction even though his MagSoles kept him attached to the dropship floor. Javelin-01 banked hard, and he shook along as the Saiyan's blow to the missile node rocked the ship. The boys up top exchanged comm chatter as they opened return fire on the Saiyan, and Apri hooted at what was presumably his confirmed hit. <<Looks like he's coming around your way, Canta. Eyes hot.>>Canta sighed in annoyance at the warning. It was bad enough that he saw it in the red dot. Now Apri was letting him know to be sure. Yes, that was SOP, but there's a world of difference between space pirates and Saiyans. <<Copy, Apri. My gun's not going anywhere.>>Not that he'd be able to do much with it either. As soon as a blur flashed across the open sky framed by the open cargo bay door, the Dragoon pulled down the trigger. The rear gun spewed hot ferrotungsten at mach 36 outward, but they hit only thin air. Canta checked his scouter again, eyes widening in response. <<Paya, he's gone under! Power level's rising! Bank! Bank!>>The dropship tilted, but it was too late. He winced as the floor dented behind him at a terrible crunching sound, not once, but twice. Canta drew his MagRifle and spun around, only to see that the Saiyan wasn't there. He'd gone straight up to the top, leaving two extremely messy holes in his wake. Sparks flew as suddenly severed wires dangled, their currents still running through them. Colonel Cerola instinctively drew her assault rifle as the Saiyan burst from the new hole just to her right. Without any hesitation, she pulled the trigger, spraying her enemy with magnetically propelled ammuntion. "Very astute. Yes, I can see why you are what they call an elite."Apri and Chuello had detached their miniguns from the mounts, but before they could open fire, trouble brewed. The ship lurched forward, before tilting in another bad direction. On comms, Captain Paya alerted the rest of the force. <<Sundae! Sundae! This is Javelin-01. We have suffered a catastrophic hull breach and are going down. Repeat: catastrophic hull breach, going down. Coordinates and calculated crash site are as follows. All hands brace for impact.>>A burst of coordinate data streamed up into the BattleNet, and Cerola could only hold tight to the autocannon as Javelin-01 crashed onto the surface of a high mesa. It skid a few dozen metres before a large rocky outcropping halted it from going any further. The crash still ringing in her ears despite the noise cancellation systems in her helmet, Cerola stumbled down from the crashed dropship and before the dust could even settle, fired a second burst of rounds in the direction of the red dot. <<Anyone still around, form up on me! We take him together!>>Two thuds against the dirt resounded behind her as Chuello and Apri sounded off. Canta sounded off as well, though his emergence from the cargo bay was slower. He still had to clear out some debris from the crash. Captain Paya did not respond, and it became clear why as the dust settled. The cockpit had taken the brunt of the crash, and struck the rock formation directly, crushing it. <<He will be remembered.>> Colonel Cerola whispered. Before they could venture to collect his holotags from the wreckage, though... they would have to defeat the Saiyan. The Captain died doing his job. And soon, Javelin-04 would be on the approach with reinforcements. All they had to do now, was accomplish the mission and incapacitate the elite... very much easier said than done. Hell. Plain and simple. The scream of crunching metal filled his ears. The ship's hull crumpled like paper all around him, trapping him within the fiery wreckage as it crashed. There were screams, but they were quickly snuffed out as some lives were claimed. Inky black smoke filled his nostrils, forcing a wet and bloody cough. It was dark in this tight, cramped space. Every inch of his body screamed from the vicious impact. His armor was all but shattered; it was little more than tattered pieces hanging from his badly beaten frame. A weak smile tugged at the corners of his lips. Figured it'd take a hail of bullets and an entire warship crashing to bring him down. One final consolation before he died. Another hail of bullets screamed through the smoke as he staggered aside, Luckily the aim was off, otherwise it'd have ended him. He stumbled out of the smoking debris—a dead man walking, held up by the sheer absurdity of it all alone. Some of the soldiers survived. Goddamn bastards. They would pay, even if it cost his life! He tilted his head back as his power surged in a massive burst of ki-infused aura exploding outward from his body. A monstrous cry of war ripped from his throat—his final attempt to down his enemy before death claimed its bounty. Maybe he could go and be with his fallen brothers. The Sky Marshal was an old man. But one would be mistaken to assume he had become senile. Many decades of leading the Tuffle Armed Services and preparing for the inevitable conflict with the Cold Force meant that he saw the biggest picture of all with crystal clarity. And to accomplish the needs of the Tuffle people, part of that picture involved capturing as many live specimens as possible. Colonel Cerola loaded a fresh magazine into her rifle as the dust settled and the Elite appeared from the wreckage. <<Incapacitors only,>> she commanded. <<The Sky Marshal wants this one alive. So let's make sure that Paya didn't die in vain.>> These posed a targeted electrical charge, specifically to neutralise the nervous system in a precise, non-lethal fashion. Of course, if they were loaded into the miniguns, then more could be sent downrange. Chuello, Apri, and Canta acknowledged, and the sound of ammunition exchanges resounded across their local segment of the BattleNet. Cerola laid down covering fire as they did, charging the Saiyan while firing controlled bursts. There was simply nowhere for them to hide while they were this vulnerable. <<Colonel!>> Chuello shouted out on comms. <<Get those Incaps loaded! I'll keep him busy!>> While some would argue it was suicidal to charge him straight ahead, running would do no good against an enemy that could fly faster than sound even when injured. When the battlefield was reduced to this flat plain, and cover and concealment were completely eliminated, sometimes the best one could do was provide a distraction for those who would follow behind. The Saiyan either humoured her little ploy, or was too enraged to care either way, as he responded in kind. An aura of black energy exploded outward from his form before he charged straight at her with clear killing intent. What would prevail? The discipline of a soldier, or the passion of a warrior? That was always something on her mind, as they began their dirty work of stealing the weak, childish, and elderly. When war inevitably broke out, which side would overcome the other? At the last second, she dodged to the left, skidding across the sand as she did so. The resulting punch obliterated the rifle and the right side of the armoured Ballistic Hump that surrounded her helmet. Otherwise, she was completely unscathed. Cerola quickly drew her sidearm and opened fire. Not that it would do much, with its much shorter barrel and resulting exponentially smaller muzzle velocity - but even if it distracted him by getting some dirt in his eye, that would be another crucial moment. And on the battlefield, the timer went by the millisecond. <<Heads up, Colonel.>> Apri commed in. She didn't need to look to know what was going to happen next. Cerola dove out of the way, her trail not even having fallen to the ground before a spray of Incapacitor rounds filled the space where she was standing a split second ago. They had to get him. He missed. The final shot—a chance to redeem his fallen brothers and he'd screwed it up.
His punch destroyed the charging soldier's rifle and sheared off a portion of her helmet. Time slowed to a crawl, and in that short span of time, his warrior instincts demanded to know the face of the one who brought him down.
Through that smoky debris, through the gash in the helmet of his foe, he caught glimpse of something he would never forget: azure hair, pale skin, and an eye that was stunningly blue.
A woman.
A thunderous salvo filled his ears as she rounded on him with her sidearm, stinging bullets searing his flesh as they pierced his fragmented armor and stung his flesh. He roared in pain, vision filled with red from battle fury.
She wouldn't get away. He wouldn't let her!
One of his arms were broken in two places, dangling useless at his side. So he grasped at her with his other, fingers desperate to catch hold. She was too fast—he grasped nothing but open air. Another hail of bullets shredded through the hazy smoke and peppered his body with innumerable rounds.
The force knocked him clear off his feet, landing hard on his back. His anger dissipated in an instant, a deep weariness settling into his bones. His body was going numb, something akin to electricity sending painful needles jutting through his body.
He could fight no longer.
"Just kill me." His voice was quiet, full of defeat. "Get it over with, you blue-haired demon."

It had worked. Not that Cerola doubted the efficacy of Incaps, having had much experience in their use against everything from space pirates, to insurrectionists, to Saiyans. But as with any first battle of any kind, there was always a much higher degree of uncertainty. The elites had proven to be terrifyingly resistant. Heart still pounding, the Colonel stood up from the dust and holstered her sidearm. She took off what was left of her helmet and tucked it underneath her left arm. The three Dragoons marched up behind her, minigun rotary barrels just winding down. "Looks like we got him, Colonel."Cerola nodded, silently gazing into her opponent's eyes, as he spoke. Yes, it was understandable that he would ask such a thing, or give her such a moniker. Her actions over the past few years have been considered rather questionable, leading operations to abduct children, the sick, the elderly, and the lost. The last two years ramped that up even further, with attempts to take combat prisoners alive. But for the Colonel, it was an acceptable loss. This was for the survival of her race. Out there, the Cold Force was encroaching like an unstoppable force, consuming entire worlds in a matter of days if not hours. Horrifying monstrosities with untold levels of power. Enough that even if the Saiyans somehow did prevail in this war, they would be utterly destroyed by what would come for them next. At the rate it was going, it would only be a matter of centuries before the Cold Force's tendrils reached this corner of the galaxy. But so long as there was time, she would do everything in her power to help the Tuffles survive the inevitable conflict. Even if it meant becoming a demon... And now, this fallen warrior only asked, in resignation, for the dignity of a fate befitting one of his station. "A warrior's death is truly what you deserve for your magnificent valour," Cerola remarked. "And were the circumstances different, it would have been my privilege to honour your last wish." In the distance, the whine of Javelin-04's engines made themselves known. "Unfortunately..." The Colonel gently brought her armoured fist down on the back of her other gauntlet, prompting a hiss from somewhere behind her person. Chuello reached into the newly revealed compartment and handed her a clean metal syringe gun, which she held up against the inside of the Saiyan's good arm. "I am duty-bound by my orders to bring you in alive."Cerola pulled the trigger, injecting a swarm of stabiliser nanites that would plug up the most grievous injuries and keep him from dying. They wouldn't heal him up instantly, however. Research on test subjects over the past few years revealed that Saiyans who recovered from near-fatal injuries somehow multiplied their base power levels by a significant factor. How this happened was still poorly understood, but it meant that the most secure containment cells had to be further reinforced for when, ironically, badly injured subjects were assigned to them. As such, the tech tree advanced in a way that they would save these Saiyan lives... but ensure the recovery process would take time, enough to prepare adequate containment. She set the syringe gun aside and looked him again in the eye. "I am Colonel Emargine Cerola of the Tuffle Armed Services' 17th Mobile Warfare Division. Remember me. For should we meet again someday, I will be sure to grant your wish... assuming it hasn't changed by then."Javelin-04 arrived, hovering overhead as the open cargo bay lowered a combat stretcher. Cerola took his torso, while Apri lifted him by the legs. In professional synchronisation, they hefted the Saiyan onto the stretcher. Soon, he would be on the way to containment... 626/4353/1000 @null

He closed his eyes and waited for death.
The bullets lodged in his body burned his flesh, though the jolt they sent through him faded to a low, almost pleasant hum. Not enough to incapacitate him entirely, but enough to keep him numbed against any effective movement.
So... that was it. That was why she didn't execute him on the spot, taking the risk of non-lethal rounds. They planned to keep him, turn him into a test subject monkey. Much like many of the innocents they had already taken. He was a man who enjoyed freedom, and now it was about to be stolen away from him forever. He wanted to kick, yell, and fight against his captors.
But perhaps this was the fate he deserved for failing his men. His brothers.
Her voice filled his ears, prompting Barlei to open his eyes. It was too soft, too feminine, far removed from the demon she was. She regarded him as a great warrior, citing she would grant his request but that she had orders to fulfill. They were cut from the same cloth. Obedient war dogs to the very end.
There was a sting in his arm as the needle was injected. His vision blurred, his mind slogging through a heavy bog of encroaching unconsciousness. The last thing he caught before the darkness took him was her name.
Colonel Emargine Cerola.
"Yeah... well... screw you too, you dumb b—" His words faded, slurring his speech.
Darkness took him. And he would not wake for a very long time after.
